"We go where we wilt. We slay who we wilt. Let the Emperor judge the righteousness of our deeds."

- Sergeant D'Kestrel, Raven Guard 1st Company

Masters of Protelus

The Masters of Protelus are one of those Chapters about which pretty much nothing is known in Imperial records – whether due to destruction of records by themselves or another, or simply due to clerical error within the Administratum (the latter probably being the most likely); even the Chapter itself comes up short when in need of information and, for this very reason, what records it does have go back only as far as the last few millennia.

What is known is that they are a largely Codex-compliant Chapter, if with a larger-than-average number of assault troops contained in its numbers, its warriors recruited primarily from the Feral World of Protelus in the Ultima Segementum – a world where various city-states are caught in what on ancient Terra would have been known as the 'Bronze Age', civilizations constantly expanding and shrinking as the Masters watch on from a fortress-monastery literally carved into the highest mountain on the planet. Terrain on the world varies from temperate continents of lush plains, to scorching deserts, and high-peaked ranges spanning entire continents.

It is from the largest and foremost civilisation of Protelus, an island-dwelling but also seafaring empire with connections across the planet, that the Chapter took their iconography of a twin-headed axe and the colours of their armour. Many of their beliefs and customs are also taken from this people, the majority of the Chapter recruited from the eight-thousand three-hundred-and-thirty-six kilometre island where the empire has its capital city.

The 10th (Scout) Company of the Chapter, that which concerns the current group, are selected from the young men of the planets various kingdoms and nations and, specifically, from the bodies of fighters that make up their armies. These range from smaller groups of warriors bonded to a warlord all the way to semi-professional armies of hundreds of thousands, only the finest selected to undertake the process of becoming one of the Emperor's finest.

Many and varied are the trials that can be set in order for a Scout to become a fully-fledged Astartes, from blood-sports to ritual combat, as long as the neophytes are alive at the end of it they have taken their first steps toward higher honours and a venerable suit of power armour along with it.

Important

Before anyone asks. No, you cannot be from another chapter, no you cannot be a full fledged space marine and no you can't be an Ork, or a T'au or anything else. You are playing scout marines of the Masters of Protelus Chapter.

Also for anyone interested here is a link to the wiki page for the Masters of Protelus.

There isn't much written about them canon wise which is exactly why I picked them for this RP. They have no established personality quirks or customs to be played around that are known. Some of these details can be made up. Small ceremonies, a figure of speech unique to the chapter maybe.

All things the players are free to talk about and that I would actively encourage!

The Story to Date:

Not all conflicts are those of large-scale warfare, of millions of lives lost in an instant, of behemoths clashing in space and on the ground. This is quite the opposite. For the Masters of Protelus the splitting of the galaxy, the coming of Guilliman once more, and the sudden influx of Primaris Marines was all taken in their stride and, for their part at least, they are doing what they can to shore up the Imperium against further assault before taking the fight to the enemy once more; before this happens, however, there is something that they must do, something concerning the Chapter.

There is a signal being emitted from world-wide jungles of the planet Formenos, a signal encoded with a very specific set of battle-cant used by the Masters in their operations. The exact location of the signal cannot be fathomed due to interference from both the jungle canopy and, more disturbingly, something apparently on the planet. Nevertheless the Chapter Master has decided that a seek-and-investigate operation would be the perfect testing grounds for the newest batch of recruits and initiates into the 10th Company.

Under the stern gaze and fist of Sergeant Epimenes the greenest of the scouts, some five squads of them, descend to the surface of Formenos with instructions to locate the signal, analyse the situation, and then vox back to the main Masters force in orbit.

What could possibly go wrong?

Name: Brother Marcion

Age: 20

Appearance: facial camo tattoos (chapter trapping), brown hair, brown eyes, tanned skin, Command HUD eyepiece and vox-link, Leather bandolier with boltshells, Wrist mounted slate monitron.

Personality: Holds grudges. Pugilistic. Tactician.

Background: WIP
I can remember my sister. She is 8 years old. She is quite a handful but mother and father manage. Still, they will teach her as much as they can, as they did with me. I remember the bush where i would explore the ruins until the sun set. I did much walking and climbing and swimming. I remember hitting the bully in the face, even though his father was a pirate captain. I remember the time i almost lost my leg to infection and we had to see a healer. So many options, so many paths that could have ended with me somewhere else, so many hurdles to overcome, it happens again and again and still, each time its just as difficult as anew. I have learned to accept that.

Beliefs: Honour thy wargear (Primary), Knowledge is power (Secondary), No respite for the enemy (Tertiary).

Preferred Combat Doctrine: Lightning Strike (Primary), Chapter Doctrine: Close Combat (Secondary)

Streangths: Marcion lacks some of the aggression of other marine aspirants, but he makes up for it with his talents.
+ Talented: (Inquiry), Marcion has learnt from his mother and father how to Inquire and learn from asking questions, he can also quickly determine if something is a lie or not.
+ Talented: (Dodge), Marcion sees dodging the enemies blows as a skill paramount to his success on the battlefield and practices endlessly to avoid a variety of weapons, at first it was hard and tiring but as his implants grew he can now do so without getting tired, but he has to keep constant practice or his skills dull.

Weaknesses:
- Curious, it is a fact of life that those who are adept at Inquiring are also curious.
- Circumspect, sometimes too given towards tactical planning as to cause delay through indecision.

Primary Weapon:
Honour

Honour is a standard issue Godwyn Diaz pattern Bolter. Marcion knows he must get used to using these if he is ever to succeed in the chapter. He can really put it through its paces though he prefers not to add mods to it as this throws the weight off and slows the speed to swing it round to engage enemies. He knows its internals and can make maintenance rituals with near perfect precision. Marcion believes this to be a holy weapon of the Emperor and as such should be decorated with kill markings before his service is through, as such he has attached a symbol of the chapter to it and a gold Aquila pendant both tied on with tight steel chain. It has a leather sling.

Secondary Weapon(s):
Scout-Sword
A large single bladed scout sword with hand guard. Its heavier dull side adds momentum when swung. It is equipped as standard with a mono edge blade. I have a mono-sharpener in my pack. It is mostly useful for cutting through the jungle foliage and anything else to cross me. It is kept in a leather sheath on my back.

Bronze boot-knife 12"
Bronze Imperial Knife (chapter trapping). This weapon has a plasteel core but is coated in the traditional bronze of the home planet which protects it from rust. Looking at this knife always reminds me of home and i feel my resolve strengthen with the will of the people that depend on me. This weapon is kept in a sheath tied to my boot.

Equipment:
- Standard issue: Scout Armour, Carbon/Titanium Weave Fatigues, "Catspaw" Morphic Tread Combat Boots, Tight-Beam Squad Comm-Link.
- Command HUD eyepiece and vox-link
- Leather bandolier with boltshells (x34)
- Wrist mounted slate monitron
- Mono-sharpener (back pack)
- Anointed maintenance kit (back pack)
- x4 24rd standard boltgun magazines (belt pouch)
- Astarties Boltpistol (in holster).
- Photo-Magnoculars (back pack)
- x3 Astarties Frag grenades w/ snaremine chord (clipped to back of belt)
- x3 Astarties krak grenades (clipped to back of belt)

Chapter Trappings: Bronze Imperial Knife (chapter trapping), Facial Camo-tattoos (chapter trapping), Chapter Symbol tied to bolter (chapter trapping), Imperial Aquila tied to bolter (memento).

Figure of Legend: Brother-Dreadnaught.
Of all the figures of legend in the chapter i most admire the Brother-Dreadnaughts. Their eternal service is a bulwark the chapter relies upon.

Considering our homeworld is generally sort of Hellenic, would slavery be a feature among their culture? I'm considering my character having been a slave-soldier.

Also, is it too late to change the chapter name? Not to protest too much, but it's a mouthful, and doesn't really spark the imagination.

Edit: Didn't realize they were a "Canon" chapter but we could pick any other "literally who" chapter for about the same effect.

Slavery may well feature in some of the cultures, yes.

Chapter name remains, uninspired as it may be...and we're not Hellenic, we're Minoan/Mycenean.

@Banzai Tracers A few things...

We write in 3rd-person, that's just something I ask over every RP I run, just makes things easier and keeps the narrative style flowing; you can still write internal thoughts etc, just without 'I' constantly coming up.

The only sections of a Character Sheet I need filled are those presented in the original post.

Why does he have a laspistol?

I do like the bronze knife idea, that's pretty cool.

At first you had my interest, now you have my attention. I will bend my mind to the creation of a character sheet when it is not as addled by a poor sleep schedule.

Sorry about the double post, but I figured an edit might go missed. Equipment feels like I kinda skimped on it but I wanted to give the idea that Gallus is adaptable and doesn't overly commit to having certain weapons or pieces of equipment on hand since he might having something happen mid-mission or the mission demands might not lend themselves kindly to taking a certain weapon or whatever.

Edit: Oh. Wait. I didn't double post. Ha! Anyway.

@Valor Looks alright to me, although everyone is recruited from Protelus itself; feel free to have him come from one of the more 'wild' parts of the planet, but they wouldn't recruit him from a separate world. Armour is fine - as basic and what not as a scouts should be.

Edit a little of his background so that he comes from their homeworld, and you're all good I.E. Can put him in the Characters tab.

I know, but i was listening to allot of calming music while channeling my creativity and it just sort of 'felt right'. I didnt want the character sheet to seem too much like a personal dossier like the CIA might have on someone, it needed to be more 'personal', so a corner stone of that is it contains allot of his beliefs in it, rather than stright up facts. Dont worry i'll get back to writing like a normal human being when the RP starts. I do wish i'd had more ideas as to his background... it seems to have come out as more a list of his emotions than a historical record...

The only sections of a Character Sheet I need filled are those presented in the original post.

Yeah but i think this adds flavour. For instance now you know that the legendary characters in the chapter he most admires are the Brother-Dreadnaughts.

Why does he have a laspistol?

Dunno, lol. If i gave him a full bolt pistol then, as he already has a full scout-sword that would just make him a pistol-sword guy instead of a bolter guy. Maybe i should change it...

I do like the bronze knife idea, that's pretty cool.

Thanks, that was a happy accident.

@Banzai Tracers Fair enough!

Feel free to give him a bolter and bolt pistol if you want, just get rid of that las-pistol please.

Apart from that, seems pretty good to me; if you do want to brainstorm ideas for Chapter background or some such, or something that may help to fill out his background, do feel free to brainstorm here.

I'll likely get a Discord group up at some point as well.

Yes, i'll have a think of a few things for the Chapter Background and my own.

But i dont want to simply produce a complete Chapter dossier like a one man show. I think we should all make a small piece and cooperate and share in the building until it comes together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Agreed, and I will be writing a few bits and bobs.

Feel free to put your CS in the Character tab, and if you want to keep working on the background then that's fine as well.

Brazen Minotaurs seems like a relatively obvious choice. Perhaps them or the Brotherhood of a Thousand, the Gorgons, the Golden Gryphons, or the Warmongers?
