Four months ago, a town in New Mexico known as Truth or Consequences went dark. Many weren't sure as to why such measures had been struck upon them but within hours the National Guard were reported to have fenced off the rest of the United States from ever reaching or hearing from such a place. Very few questions were asked at the time as more and more governmental figures silenced off what they had been questioning from the day 'it' began. Some attempted to break into the town to try and find what was wrong but reports of explosions, gunfire and sightings of combat aircraft launching from overhead scared the trespassers away with little effort. Conspiracy after conspiracy rose up after the first week, wondering what kind of situation was going on there. Some pondered if it were a terrorist plot, turning the town into a warzone, whilst others predicted that it was a live-fire testing ground for new military technologies. Both couldn't be further from the truth.
Under black ink, that fateful day showed the tainted world a new foe that could not be anticipated. After a local, blacked under many lines of ink and lost amongst shredded papers, spotted something falling from the sky. When investigating what he'd found, a Soviet-Era satellite was found crashed into a nearby barn. What happened from there remains completely unknown, but less than two hours later the town was under complete lock-down. Distress signals that quickly shot up to the highest chains of military command resulted in the town being segmented off from the rest of the world. Phone lines were cut, signal jammers were put in place and other meaningful methods to suppress all knowledge of the incident were underway. Thousands from the National Guard were stationed throughout the state, blockading roads and setting up fencing all over. It was almost as if the entire settlement was wiped from existence when in reality it was. Reconnaissance aircraft, including helicopter patrols staged by both the Guard and Air Force assets available on hand left their pads and circled to find a very different, alienated world that had been trapped by their own government. Only a few scouting parties were officially brought into the light at the first week's notice, trying to limit all the suspicion it could.
Below their rotors and spotlights stood a town that didn't even seem human anymore. Strange formations of rocky spikes, tipped with red glows and cracks of the same colour, stretched for the 33km of territory that had been formally called into Quarantine. Amongst them were humanoid lifeforms, roaming around in numbers in delusional fashions reminiscent of Romero's old works. Closer inspection was called by calling specialised ground teams to enter the area and investigate via communication and scientific scrutiny. Within thirty minutes, that team was never heard of again, with their last radio broadcast indicating that these 'monsters' were incoherent, violent monstrosities of the people that acted as puppets for their manifestation. Many speculate that it was from the Soviet-Satellite in which a virus, dubbed Chimera for the vicious product it had created, that forged and mutated these innocent lives beyond repair. Thousands began to fall to the infection. Not only were its original inhabitants brought to their knees but those sent in to observe and combat the threat were soon thrown into the clutches of this violent epidemic. By the first week, the numbers in which dictated who had lived and died were lost in the confusion, with the barricades locking the infection in becoming more and more unstable every day.
On Day 19, since Patient Zero infected the town, radio chatter reported that the Northern, Southern and Eastern barracks and defences were breaking apart. Those available and on-site were soon lost in the panic. Like a crack in a glass, the contained substances were starting to ooze out and leak into the rest of the world. More of the strange rock formations leapt across the state quickly. Splits between the National Guard and Special Operators led to mass confusion and ruined organisation. Bombing tactics became inefficient and somewhat dangerous, occasionally catching friendly military and civilian personnel in their wake. And still, the officials behind these operations were trying their hardest to suppress all knowledge of such a disaster coming about. It was inevitable for the world to soon know.
Before any announcements or evacuations could be made, Santa Fe was laid under heavy isolation. Creatures of the unknown, some mutated to the point of looking anything except humanoid, spread throughout, wiping out life and flooding all forms of resistances. The outbreak had grown quicker than anticipated. Full military strengths were beginning to amass into the state as a defensive perimeter was once again set up, this time on a larger scale, whilst preparing the full might of this force. And on the last day of that first month, Truth and Consequences became the birthplace of a virus that had started to spread throughout Central, South and North-America, with strains being reported in Europe, Indonesia and Asia alike. This was the beginning of the end of days, and those involved had theirs numbered.
Welcome to The Chimera Virus: Pandemic. This is a speculative scenario based off a limited time mode within Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege known simply as outbreak, in which a New Mexican town was infested with a strange and unexplained virus, resulting in military operations called to suppress and eliminate the threat through conventional means. Debates of nuclear options were set aside as high-valued targets were reported within the area of operations, hence why it had to be dealt with on a more personal level. This scenario, however, is not to be tied in heavily with the game itself and instead focuses on a lore of its own. Following the same origins and setting, this scenario looks towards what happened if the quarantine failed and the infection broke loose, spreading to other states, countries and continents with some ease.
Characters will be of either standard military positioning, all from the Northern American armed services, such as the US National Military, the Mexican Armed Forces and the Canadian Forces, or civilian backgrounds. Other nationalities are somewhat unlikely as the infection has been known to spread to other areas, thus borders are being closed, colonies are defended and homelands are being prioritised by its own people. Yes, it is slightly common for certain allies to send volunteers to the main area of infection, the American continents, but the nations previously opposing the US see them as receiving karma for covering up such a critical situation. Central and South-American nationalities are to be explored as well, but as far as military characters go they are restricted to only certain nationalities unless a valid reason is given.
The roleplay itself will take place after the fall of New Mexico, when Santa Fe was completely overrun, and the mass spread of Chimera carriers throughout the southern parts of the United States. With the breakout in disarray, a strange stalemate had occurred where the perimeters surrounding the state received no resistance whatsoever. Because of this, we have options for citizens and military operators to collaborate in rescuing one another when sent into the infected lands, or by the breaching causing soldiers to escort large groups of undefended innocents to safe areas further within the borders of the United States. The scenario will play out differently dependent on what the characters do. Whilst this isn't a sandbox RP, there will be many directions that the plot will go through, as well as the countless sub-plots based around character developments and so forth. Trust in the government, military and one another will be tested by the unrelenting strain of Chimera infected foes unleashing upon them. Cities will become cages to trap characters in whilst tensions between the citizens and soldiers alike will grow weaker, possibly breaking out into human-on-human conflict. All is dependent on how the Chimera strain effects the characters and their actions.
For the Chimera types, I highly recommend you go to the provided outbreak link above. Here it gives some rough information about the types of Roaches (known as the Chimera Infected in this scenario) that characters will encounter throughout their journey through hell. Characters are likely to set up temporary defences to hold off against incoming hordes throughout their trip, but where they travel to in America, the continent and even the world rests in their decisions, ideals, morality and choices made throughout the tale.
As to reduce confusion, here will be two separate character sheets for you to choose from. One is, as you could guess, tailored more towards the military characters that might appear in the story. If anyone wishes to make secondary characters or primarily take the role of a civilian caught in the crossfire/chaos that is the approaching apocalypse, then a second character sheet will be provided below. Both don't differentiate too much from one another, but I highly recommend that all the necessary information within the sheet is included, no matter what design you choose. Characters need to feel detailed and explained before their actions are put into place whenever the IC begins and continues. Follow the sheets as they are and feel free to add additional information if you wish.
The story will be ever-shifting and I hope to create a story filled with strange but unique characters alike. Whether romance blooms, hatred ensues or violence dictates their actions, what will the outbreak of Chimera do to civilisation? Will order stand within the army or will units go rogue to pursue personal goals? Do organisations start to conscript citizens to fight the ever-growing threat that lusts to infect all life around? And what do other countries do in this time of need? Despite America not choosing the nuclear options, what would happen if another major power decided to do it for them? All of these scenarios can be explored by character, player and GM choice. Let's see if these characters have what it takes to survive in hell, now upon earth.
