Red started to work as a wilderness guide, but he wasn’t happy with his life. Red wanted excitement, danger and adventure in his life. He was the only child in his family, and after losing his parents to a car accident, Red travelled to Ukraine and to the Zone about two years ago. Red became a stalker-for-hire, learning from an older stalker named Mihály.
Unfortunately, Mihály was caught by a military patrol and arrested for smuggling. Red hasn’t heard about him since. Recently, Red has been working as a freelancer, gathering samples for the Institute. Personality-wise, Red has, at times, been a quiet man, but also humorous and perceptive.
Equipment: Red uses a German Flecktarn camouflage uniform with a green-and-black Shemagh around his neck and a field cap. He also has a AK-47 and a Browning M1911 semi-automatic pistol. Description: Sokolov has short, black hair, and is gaunt faced, as if he had been underfed. He is clean shaven and in exceptional physical condition for a man of his age. Cunning and articulate, he is a man whose used to command others.
Occupation and skills: An expert in trekking, survival and reconnaissance, Sokolov used to serve as a Spetsnatz officer in his twenties and early thirties.
Character history: Born in 1981 in the Moscow suburbs, Sokolov lived in a rough neighborhood, where he had to protect his younger siblings. His father was a major in the Soviet Army, who taught his son to be self-reliant, obedient and tough. Once, Sokolov was on a camping trip with his father and younger brother. His brother fell into an icy pond, but Sergei rescued him. His brother contracted pneumonia, and died a few weeks later. This affected Sergei's mindset and character.
As the Soviet Union collapsed, Sergei's father Stepan was fired from the army as part of the military downsizing. The family had some monetary troubles in the 1990s, but Stepan's illegal activities, such as smuggling goods and artifacts in and out of the Zone helped the family. Stepan had made contacts among the stalkers after the Disaster. However, he was caught and arrested in 1998, though not jailed. Stepan continued until 2004, when he went missing in the Zone. The mystery was never solved.
As Sokolov came of age, he was conscripted into the army's special forces, and he excelled in patrolling, reconnaissance and stealth activities, continuing into officer training. He stayed in the army as an instructor for most of the early to late 2000s, quitting his job in 2010 and heading to the Zone soon after to look answers for what had happened for his father. He founded the Rangers to act as a policing force in the Zone, and has been in the Zone quite long periods of time ever since.
