The land of Theros is large, covered mostly in forests and mountains. It is home to the magical creatures and races, and the human clans who do not tolerate violence. Recently, there have been sightings of strange deformed creatures attacking villages and travellers, though where they originate no one is sure.
The Gryphons have guarded Theros for centuries, partnered with and cared for by the various bipedal races they protect. Now, as a new threat seems to rise, they have begun sending out more scouts, generally in groups of four- two gryphons with their bi-pedal partners.
The humans who live there are peaceful, the gryphons don't tolerate violence for violences sake. But they themselves can be extremely dangerous when they are protecting themselves or the border.
Also, you aren't paired with them like some magical bond between dragon and rider in an Eragon-esque novel.
The way it will go is you have trained for years in gryphonic care and fighting in order to be paired with a gryphon scout. Your bi ped is essentially a veterinarian with some fighting skill in case you get in a pickle.
The Gryphons are sentient, most of them have magic of either mind or node power, and they are autonomous. They're basically held above the other races because they are benevolent protectors by their own choice. Every race is treated equally, but Gryphons are almost revered by the populace as a whole. An outsider who harms a Gryphon would be considered an enemy of every law abiding citizen.
In the pairs the Gryphons fly, scout, and fight if need be. The biped takes care of the Gryphon's needs and does things like set up camp and cook food etc. They should be well versed in hand to hand combat and probably a bow or short sword, but they are not typically going to be the main fighter. Def not skilled enough to take out more than one or two dumb mercs or monsters alone in melee.
I'm heavily influenced by Mercedes Lackey, if you know of her. So in my mind there are two kinds of magic- mind magic and ley line or node magic. Mind magic can be any number of things that rely on power within the mind (mind speaking, firestarting, fetching etc). Mages rely on nodes of power within the physical realm. Bad dudes tend to use death and torture to feed their nodes, while good guys generally use what is available naturally.
For the races I typically don't have a limited set, although certain things like demons/angels/orcs don't really fit.
------
I will work on a more detailed opening post, but I'm looking for at least one other person, possibly more depending on interest. You'll have two characters, your gryphon and your bi-ped. I do not have a hard plot progression, I would like to just allow it to develope on it's own, and I welcome ideas. :)
