I was actually thinking of using the indigenous population for fodder.

Most of the towers defenders are made up of soldiers revived into suits of living armor. The Detherkil evolved advanced forms of necromancy before their fall.

Spawn has living armor made from soul mass.
Armor with a sentient AI controlling it is technically living.
Spirit armor. Armor possessed by the spirit of the one who died inside it.
Armor that is automated but has no sentience.
Armor that is grown from the body.
