And that, my dear Khan, is why I prefer particle beams to straight up lasers. Same concept as the guns of mass effect, but firing millions of atomic particles instead of one sand-sized one. Much more energy delivered on-target, with the advantage of being a sustainable attack if one shot doesn't get the job done. They also have only one of the disadvantages you listed for lasers (EMP's), and all of the advantages of them combined with most of the advantages of traditional projectiles. And the EMP thing isn't even a weakness exclusive to directed energy weapons, as chemical propellants can only push a bullet so fast. If you want to exceed that limit, you have to get into the realm of rail guns and then you have the same EMP problem as pure energy weapons.

I consider Particle Accelerator to be in mostly the same camp as any other kinetic impact accelerated weapon.

Depends on the temperature of the laser, if it's hot enough it'd just burn right through the fog of war.

Oh, and though im not sure why, TvTropes say that lasers do not cauterize wounds.

An excellent source for facts.

Okay. So you want a weapon that would fuck a jedi up?

A directional sound blaster. The you-bleed-from-every-bodily-orfice-and-die-horribly kind. Try blocking that with a lightsaber.

Dammit that was my idea.

You could also make it worse by making use of ultrasound waves.

A gun that shoots a web of corrosive slime, thick enough that it can't be easily wiped off. In a wide enough spread that it can't be easily dodged. And fast enough that it can't be outrun.

Well taking examples from what we know of lasers today.

Fact 1) Lasers are used today to cut things.
Fact 2) Lasers are used today to weld things.
Fact 3) Lasers seem to cauterize wounds and are therefore used in contemporary medicine as a substitute for scalpels because using them reduces bleeding.

What effect would that have on realistic sci-fi laser weapons?

Option 1) Lasers still cauterize wounds, so if I shoot someone with a laser gun he will not bleed. If the diameter of the beam is pretty small and exposure to the beam is pretty short, my opponent will have a tiny but sealead wound with nearly no effect...

Option 2) The energy output of a laser gun dramatically increases, leading to spontaneous vaporization of human tissue, resulting in an effect comparable to an tiny explosion. Cauterization is less likely, but wounds are probably pretty superficial, as the beam does not penetrate that deeply.

Unless you change the physics of how lasers work in the future.

Btw, for sneaking up on a jedi with a gun, why did no one think of the Ysalamiri?

Yeah. You guys can win, but there's no fun being equipped to the teeth with so much good stuff you can kill a jedi master before they can fight back. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Would you like me to create the thread? It won't be much besides a brief outline and character sheets.

BTW, what are the possible means of defending against a particle beam weapon (dodging-before-it-fires aside)?

Standard mage duel? I'd be up for that.

Standard duel of mages, like classic magic vs magic, without heavy armor or guns and such.

I might set up a thread. I was meaning to introduce one here but never got to it.

Don't let it fire in the first place.

So, FF style magic or older?
