>> The deal seems reasonable to me, I'm willing to accept.

Also I'm guessing the training of soldiers and such Daniel can do will be in place of any missions while he is busy, is that right?

@Mae
>Such a hard choice to make. So many familiar faces and so few golds to share. The first person that Buford decided to cross out his list of interest is Asgor. The current mission does not require any navigation on the sea, and that make Asgor's skill to be less valuable. The second person that made it out of his list of interest is Clint. While the mine could lay the most amount of gold, it also required a lot of gold in the beginning - gold that Buford couldn't afford in the first place.
>The person that Buford willing to accept without any concern is Tendo, his master, and Katya, the Blacksmith's daughter. They both have taught him much during his earlier time as an apprentice. Thus, it is only reasonable for him to pay back his debt now.
>The third person that Buford brought to his party is Grubbins the Ratcatcher. The man's experience in dealing with vermins can promise the group of a well-rest night. Potentially, even earning some wild meals.
>Lastly, Buford takes along brings along Izzy Nins the Mystery Wizard. He is quite skeptical about her being the Wizard part. But, if she lied, she is just going to shot in her own foot.
(Accept Tendo the Weaponsmith; Katya the Blacksmith's daughter; Grubbins the Ratcatcher; and Izzy Nins the Mystery Wizard)

@Duthguy That's correct, he can't do it while also dungeoncrawling, for example.

@Shovel
Buford the Scout recruits the following:
Izzy Ninns, 1st level Mage
Tendo the Weaponsmith, Weaponsmith 0th level
Katya the Blacksmith's Daughter, Villagefolk 0th level
Grubbins the Ratcatcher, Ratcatcher 0th level

They do not require a wage for the first month and will look forward to their cut of the treasure in future delves. Buford accepts Katya's wish to kill goblins soon.
Katya's Wish: Kill some goblins.

Your new crew starts to hastily get their gear together. Between yours and Daniel's men, it seems there is really quite little left to outfit the groups properly. Still, perhaps you will get the opportunity to upgrade some of their shoddy items. You hope, anyway.

With a nod to each other, you both set out on adventurer, your ragtag crew travelling with you. Izzy talks the whole way, while Flint says nothing. Wily Natters seems happy to spin any old - though interesting - yarn to anyone who seems to have rapt enough attention. Katya's face is pulled taunt in a look of determination, ready to prove to the world she isn't a kidnapped victim anymore. In a weird way, it's as if you're bringing the village with you on your journey.

It takes you a little over an hour to reach Old Fort by the northeast road. While a little worn these days, it is still the main way of travel for those coming down from Porttown to sell their wares. Still, Old Fort is one of few military bases still standing and defending the realm from the borderlands. Out there, all sorts of dark beasts roam, bringing with them tyranny and terror.

The Fort looms on the horizon, a quiet sentinel. The main Gatehouse stands on the hill before you, daring you entry. To the south, near the great river, a simple dirt track leads up to a smaller gateway. What do you do?

Daniel or Buford may try to recall local lore or talk to their Henchmen about Old Fort if they wish.
Your henchmen are in good spirits.
Everyone is well rested, well fed, and have drunk their fill recently.

Each Square roughly 10ft, not perfect to scale
Old Fort

@Shovel Buford approaches the Old Fort. Towards the Main Entrance, the Eastern Gatehouse, you spy an inn and two other buildings. You take a longer route along a dirt path, that curves the circumference of the fort, a far way down the hill. As you approach the Blink River, you climb up towards the awaiting gatehouse.

The thick, timber doors loom before you. No one is watching at the battlements, where you spy a balista pointing out from the walkway.

No one answers your calls...

@Duthguy Irene knows nothing about the old fort, and Flint is silent as usual. You don't think he's ever left the edges of the village, and Irene spends more time in the woods then in civilisation.

Old Man Smith pipes up:
"Been a long ass time since I've been this way. The fort still looks the same from what I can see though. In my time we had far, far more soldiers then the looks now - why, 25,000 and more of us called this here keep home, and that doesn't even count the horsemen. Shoved us in like sardines and worked us hard, mind you. The smell - I remember the smell most of all. They ended up building a bathhouse for us real quick like..."
You try to get him back on topic a bit, but he ends up reminiscing about smelly socks for a while.

Wily Natters is never short of things to say:
"The merchant's forum is on the East gate. Quite a busy little area too, with a comfortable enough inn (I suppose, I mean, it's quite good for this area, but there are certainly better ones) and a bathhouse. They don't let anyone but the military use the North and South gates anymore, no idea why."

His eye is twinkling, and he leans in closer to you.

"Well, nevermind all that. What *I'm* really interested in is that the Commander here is offering a big gold reward for a little nitty gritty work. Protecting the surrounding countryside or some such - I forget the details. But right up our alley, surely? After all, we're here to save the village... might as well get a wage for our work." He wiggles his eyebrows, his charm barely hiding his greed.

You group up and exchange what you've learned. The ten of you pass by the inn, bathhouse and the merchant's forum. As you approach the East gate, you realise the doors are open and the portcullis raised. Two guards patrol the walkway above, and a muscular woman in platemail eyes you up as you approach.

"Halt. Sheath your weapons and state your names and purpose for coming here." She says curtly, a was tablet in hand.

>> Daniel signaled his part of the group to stop and put his sword away. "My name is Daniel and my and my partners are because we want to know why there haven't been any patrols near our village." Despite how he felt about the sitaution he did his best to stay calm and hoped what he said didn't sound like an accusation.

>Similar to Daniel's group, Buford ordered his people to sheath their weapons before introduce their intention for coming to the Fort. "I'm Buford, the blacksmith of the nearby village. And our intention is similar to the previous group, asking why the Old Fort no longer send its troops to protect our settlements?

The bronzed platoon commander looked backwards and forwards between the two of you, and she seemed to relax slightly. She sighed. "we don't have the men for it." she looked behind her down the avenue towards a large building in the middle of the Fort.

"The Commander of Old Fort, Ulrand, will be privy to discussing this information, far more then I can. He may well have a job that will interest you, if you're concerned about the increase in beastman raids on villages in the area recently. You can find him in the Headquarters building, just down the avenue here."

>> "Thanks for the info." If the Fort was that low on man power it made some sense for them not to help out the village, but Daniel still didn't like it. Anyway it wasn't the woman's fault. Taking the part about asking Ulrand as an invitation he walked into Old Fort.

You walk through the busy avenue, seeing soldiers go to and fro on errands, some attending to horses, others with various documents to deliver. You enter the headquarters building and find yourself standing in a colonnaded courtyard, filled with soldiers and potential adventuring companions alike. You both have plenty of companions to keep an eye on currently though, and don't think you could direct any more given your inexperience. Towards the south of the courtyard, a set of stairs leads up to a hallway, where upon you see a bronzed gate flanked by two guards.

Strewn along the pillars of the courtyard are various bulletins, notices and missives, giving a glimpse into the work of Old Fort. Some in particular jump out at you.

>> Having read all the bulletins Dan had to admit there were good reasons for the lack of troops near their village, though he still didn't like it. Since solving a few of those problems should lower the burden the guards at Old Fort carried and they would be a good source of experience he asked Natters Flint what he knew about the two missing merchants, Irene about the North Forest and Smith about whatever he had info on before continuing on to the Commander

>Taking the look at the bulletins and the pieces of information being pinned, Buford could only grow more concern for the dire state that locals are in. Already, two hostiles forces are in the area. Without fooling around, Buford headed to where the commander should be while Daniel is still asking his group members about the potential to complete some mission. At least someone is still positive enough though.

I've kind of got an idea for a character, but I'm not sure if you'd allow it.

Basically, they'd be an average citizen who was taken away by the kobolds, and cursed by one of their shamans to become one of them... they would then leave the cave to an (at best) lukewarm welcome, and would have some motivation to both leave to become an adventurer... and to try to learn the arcane arts, if nothing else, then to try to undo the curse (though, they will never be able to do that).
