Looking to Play Emet-Selch from FFXIV [Playing M4A]

Black Rose. A deadly magical plague crafted by the Garleans to use against their foes. The Ascians had hoped it would usher in the 8th Umbral Calamity—and they were right. However, the plague was not without its flaws. Its aim to stem the flow of aether was far too effective—going so far as to tilt one’s very soul to stasis. Each individual affected was not only destroyed. They were destroyed forever.

Emet-Selch watched in horror as his beloved succumbed to the plague. Unable to help, unable to change their fate. The Warrior of Light was finally undone...

The Architect felt no joy in this. They had won, sure, but at what cost? Souls were not merely something that could be easily replaced. Especially not theirs...

Fortunately, the Paragon was not the only one who felt so strongly for the Champion of the Source. Over the course of their life they touched many lives, changing them for the better. It was within these souls that Emet-Selch had to put his faith...

And so, he watched.

Much to his surprise, those who would place their faith in the Warrior if Light succeeded, transporting Archon G’raha Tia back in time, to a world not his own.

Though the Architect knew his naive self would not suffer interference. Nor would the Emissary. And so, he would watch...

The time would come for him to die. Emet-Selch watched from the Underworld as his other self perished, ready and willing to accept his aether, his memories into his own...

And thus, they were one. Of one soul, one mind. With his faith in the Warrior of Light, once more, he would watch. Wait. Though he longed for his beloved. Perhaps now was the time for action...

What I'm Looking For:

As I’ve stated in my ad here, I’m looking to play a very specific character; Emet-Selch from Final Fantasy XIV. This can either be a 1x1 or a group setting.

I know most who RP 1x1s are looking for romance or smut, or looking for a partner of a specific gender. I am not, however I'm open to romantic themes if it makes sense, only delving further—also if it makes sense. I’m happy to ship with the WoL or any character. I am 30 IRL, and happily married. Anything that happens IC, is IC only. I'm not looking to pick up dates, I just want to play pretend as a smarmy grandpa. I've had some interesting past experiences, which is the only reason I'm clarifying. Thankfully everyone I’ve met so far using this character has been a peach! Love you guys! ♥️

That said I’m pretty relaxed on who I RP with, but do your best with grammar, and write as coherently as possible. If I can’t read your post, my response isn’t going to be great! Post length doesn’t matter as long as I have enough to respond to. I’ll generally post around two paragraphs, though it may be more or less depending on the situation!

Anyway, I'm not very picky on settings, or characters I'm matched against. Can be male, female, non-binary, trans, whatever. Sometimes the strangest matchups can yield hilarious and fun results! I’m all about character interactions. I can’t get enough!

Any romance plot must involve characters 18+, with players being the same. If the plot isn’t romance, I don’t care, at all. Also since Emet-Selch seems to be PC-sexual, that is how he shall be played. I don’t care what gender your character is, and nor does Emet. Assuming he finds your character attractive! (Spoilers, he probably will, especially if your character is the Warrior of Light.)

I already have a few good threads with this character, just looking to add some more to the list!

Also don’t be afraid to ask to change the RP or start a new one. A lot of times in RP a scene will give me an idea I feel is stronger or better than a current idea. I’m always down to try out new things, don’t feel like you’re locked into our first RP!

Personality

Depressed shitposter. Loves the sound of his own voice, and enjoys attention. Is very set in his ways, but very open to making others set in his ways too. He much prefers watching to actively participating in most situations, particularly combat. While he’s fully capable of helping, he’d rather not, and he is sure to tell you as much.

Emet-Selch is a lonely old man who has seen the rise and fall of empires, and the development of new technologies. Little surprises him any more. That said, he's intrigued by new experiences, and is happy to force his company upon an innocent bystander.

This Architect of Empires has a certain fondness for children, and those who have suffered extreme hardship. Though he is not wont to admit it, he strives to make life a better place for those he feels are worthy of his attention.

Though his true name is Hades, he doesn't readily reveal it, preferring to use his title 'Emet-Selch' (pronounced Ehmitt-Selk). In Amaurot, the city of his birth, individuality was frowned upon, and as such names were much more personal in nature.

Abilities

Creation Magic - The ability to take aether and shape it into a new form; including, but not limited to living organisms. This aether either comes from within, or from the surroundings. This includes life energies from other entities, however it does not necessarily have to kill the entity in question, and generally speaking it does not. This is in part because He has the ability to choose where he draws aether from, which can utilize multiple sources. This allows his magic to benefit from the collective strength, allowing them to be both stronger, and less personally taxing.

A strange quirk with Creation Magic is it requires absolute concentration, as the slightest distraction can alter the desired result. Even if you are attempting to recreate a familiar entity, it could change with a simple, stray thought.

Even compared to his peers, Emet-Selch is gifted in the field, which would explain his title of Architect. He is capable of creating an entire city with only a portion of his vast reserves of Aether.

Since Emet-Selch has a flair for the dramatic, he enjoys snapping his fingers in combination with creation. He thinks this makes him look cooler, or perhaps more worthy of adoration.

The Gift - The Gift (also referred to as the Echo) is a unique trait possessed by all those who made Amaurot their home once upon a time. The more complete an Amaurotine’s soul is, the more powerful their echo. According to Lahabrea, it is the power to break down the barriers of existence; which is true to an extent. As such, it allows them a great amount of influence over the world at large, and the forces that control it.

Aether Manipulation - The ability to harness and utilize raw magical energy. This generally takes on the form of spell casting, but he is also able to track the flow of the life stream, and create rifts into the Void.

Shapeshifting - Amaurotine's do not have a physical form per-se. They are able to "pour" their soul into any "container" they see fit; being existing or fabricated. It is often used to take on the form of false-deities and powerful monstrosities—say Shiva, or Quetzalcoatl. Emet-Selch has his own form, taken from his true namesake; Hades. These forms are empowered by faith.

Despite the fact that Emet-Selch is fully capable of utilizing these transformative magicks, he prefers to stay with one form as much as possible, as too much alteration drains ones Aether reserves.

Ascian Prime - An Ascian soul made aetheric. It has the ability to control vast amounts of aether in a form suited for combat.

Hades - Hades’ ascended form. It’s capable of impressive feats of sorcery, conjuring dark-aspected aether to do combat. It has two forms; one physical and one aetheric. In his aetheric form, he is able to call upon the souls of the deceased to combine with him to grant him power.

Resonance - The ability to resonate with others' souls. This can be used for communication, and allows them to empathize with a person or creature’s past experiences. They are capable of seeing the color and form of a person’s soul, which allows them to easily identify an individual. Due to their nature, a soul is incapable of deceit—or at least the ones from Hydaelyn are.

History

Born in Amaurot in eons past, he grew up in a utopian society, designed to allow all to flourish. Though treated equally, some were more skilled than others. As such Hades became a part of the Convocation of Fourteen—Amaurot’s governing body, and bestowed the title Emet-Selch, the Architect. He was tasked with the construction and maintaining of the city’s buildings and functions. It was no small feat, but he enjoyed his work.

This happiness would not last forever. Something about their star changed—the physical and aetherial realm began to warp their world beyond recognition, and this incited fear, and panic. Emotions they were unfamiliar with. The Amaurotines creation magicks became tainted, and they gave rise to terrifying abominations.

To this end, the Convocation of Fourteen gathered, desperate to find a solution to deliver them from destruction. They found the only way was to rewrite the laws of existence. However to do this, they would need to create a powerful entity; the will of the Star made manifest.

To create a God requires no small amount of power, and as such half of Amaurot’s population was sacrificed to bring forth their salvation. And a savior He was, indeed.

However, that wasn’t enough. All life was gone. As such, they sacrificed another half of their remaining population to seed the Star with life. Hades had lost so much, and was not going to stand for this. It was not fair what happened, and as such he hatched a plan to bring everyone back. By any means necessary.

His closest friend objected to his ambitious plan, which involved seeding life only to sacrifice their Aether. They believed it was their turn to exist, and that Amaurot’s chapter had concluded.

Not conceding, Emet-Selch was well on his way to enact his plan when Venat, along with their followers, summoned their own god to serve as His shackles. The clash of these powerful primals caused reality itself to split into fourteen pieces; the Source, and Thirteen Shards.

Only Three Amaurotines were spared from the sundering. Hades’ grief turned into madness, and he and the remaining two Paragons began to hatch a plan to rejoin the fragmented Star.

Longing for home, Hades would continue playing the role of Architect, creating grand, technologically advanced civilizations. He was proud of them, but he was constantly disappointed by man. They were selfish creatures who cared for no one but themselves. They weren’t even truly alive. Merely ghosts of what could have been. This disgusted him.

He tried to grow fond of them, even taking up countless lovers throughout his lifetime. Still he found them wanting. Through his experiences, he confirmed his initial opinion that the only way to truly fix the world, was to rejoin the shards, awaken his god, Zodiark, and sacrifice the followers of Hydaelyn so that Amaurot may be reborn.

I just happened to stumble across this post when I was looking for FFXIV RP one of my friends mentioned about lol. Just for reference, I've finished the msq for ShB but Idk what kinda theme/setting you're planning to plot.

As for settings/plot I'm open to ideas. That said, if it's a FFXIV-setting plot, I can either do pre-death Emet-Selch, any timeline including Allagan if you'd like, or post-death with some soul shenanigans to revive him.

I can find vaguely "realistic" ways to put him in a crossover/different setting as well. If it's a setting I'm familiar with, I'm happy to come up with some sort of a plot, but if I'm not familiar you'll probably have to do a lot more hand-holding.

This is a starter I came up with to make my friend choke, so it's useable. Basically he didn't die, for some strange reason, instead returning whole to the lifestream. Could make it a plot-device of some sort, or some larger overarching plot. I kinda pulled it out of my ass so I didn't completely think the whole thing through. xD

Possible Starter

It was a strange feeling, flowing through the aether. However, it wasn't something wholly unfamiliar to him, but he did not expect to be conscious through it this time around. So many shattered souls twisted and churned around him, but he knew that he was still whole. Somehow. The final blow from the Warrior of Light should have been enough to fully shatter his existence, yet he was still there.

The question now was how would he get out. Normally, he had a large store of aether, but the fight had taken the last of his strength. It would regenerate, for sure, but he wasn't sure if he wanted to wait flux for as long as that might take. Time ran differently inside of the lifestream, and it would feel like an eternity, even if only five minutes passed on the Source.

Still, he had no choice, and he would have to wait...

Locating his body was a simple task. Thankfully, his grandson had made an abundance of clones. Why? That part he still hadn't figured out, but it was useful nonetheless. Bleary-eyed, he pushed open the glass hatch, and lifted his naked form from the container. "Hnn... did she really have to hit me that hard? I was fairly certain I was dead. For good, this time." Throwing out his arms, he exclaimed, "Things never are that easy, are they..."

Feet dripping wet with artificial amniotic fluid, he snapped his fingers, instantly drying and robing himself with his choice attire. It was so niceof his grandson to do this for him, all of these bodies. He almost forgave him for shooting him. Almost.

Newly clothed, a smirk played across his lips, as he thought to himself, I'm sure she'd be surprised to see me. After what she did to me... oh, but would she be overjoyed, or perhaps would she try to kill me again? I wonder... but perhaps that is what's so exciting...

Ooooooo I actually like that idea but if you're already using that idea with someone else, maybe I might suggest either with a different twist or another timeline, etc so this one won't just be another duplicate to you!

I also thought about pre-death rp just exploring different ideas the canon content didn't cover like side story/extra interactions between Emet and WoL but I also have a few other ideas like yeah you said Allagan like did you mean pre-calamity Amaurot? tbh I was dying for them to delve deeper into the past between Emet and the original being of WoL before becoming shards

The other other idea I thought about was, this might be cliche but I saw an art trend on Twitter and thought, university au with Prof Emet and WoL student/newbie teacher but Idk lmao.

I'm generally fine with going comedy, angst or developing romance!

Oh man, I like all of these ideas. And no my friend chickened out and didn’t respond LOL! So that one’s still free. But yeah any of those sound amazing. Hell I’d even do all of them but that might be too ambitious. I did mean Allagan since he created that empire much as he did Garlemald. But I adore Amaurot, and that would be fun to explore too.

I’m also currently playing through Fire Emblem Three Houses so the school plot is something I can do too!

OOOOOOO wait really? I feel bad for like stealing your initial partner's spot but I'd like to make use of that starter/plot LMAO. Because I'd like to think that my WoL didn't want to kill him if she could've helped it, he had his reasons for wanting to bring back his comrades and I feel that she could relate to his sentiments? It's just that his ambitions and hate pushed her for the need to suppress him.

Whoops I rambled but basically I like your idea! If it's alright, we can use that plot point but I also kind of want to do a little bit of mid-ShB interactions to do pre-developmemt of their relationship then skip to post-ShB/resurrection, if you don't mind? Mostly because you know, WoL is mostly silent and the personality/responses are pilot so her reaction in seeing Emet alive after the whole fight would make more sense/meaningful. I'm sorry I'm such a romantic and like relationship development scenarios

I was thinking maybe around Raktika since there were more revelation to him and the ancients from before? Also because he actually starts to travel with the group at that time and gives better reason for him to hang around WoL without too much suspicion lol.

Any gender is fine! As far as romance goes, I really don’t think Emet cares, so whatever gender/character you want to play is fine with me. As far as fun personalities, anything would work, but sassy may be interesting!

Played through FFXIV's MSQ to completion a while ago; Emet's my favorite villain and among my favorite characters in that game for sure. I think I'd enjoy an RP about the founding of the Empire, or during its early days. If we were to do that I was thinking I could play as a Garlean soldier or mercenary assigned to him as a bodyguard for protection of sorts? During the days when he was still Emperor, or one of the people who helped him found the Empire if it was pre-Empire.
