Sephra here! I, as you might already know, am the director of humanities at Maidsong Girls Academy. Of-course our brand of "humanities" differs than that of out the outside world, but it accomplishes the same goal of teaching human history and accomplishments. Anyways, I know you already know all of this because you listened in class, but as a little refresher I'll recap you on the history of M.A/I.D.
1191 B.C.E: The first recorded instance of Gen. 1 in service to the female Egyptian Pharaoh Twosret. During the subsequent Egyptian civil war at the end of Twosret's reign Gen. 1 acted as spies and assassins.
901 B.C.E: Towards the end of the Greek Dark Ages Gen. 1 officially finds themselves in service to an unnamed Greek Scholar.
Circa 800 B.C.E - 100 B.C.E: During this time period any records alluding to Gen. 1 having a presence in the Mediterranean region are not present. Instead, many records from Asian regions allude to "Fair-skinned female servants." These records have been found spanning from India to eastern-China.
Circa 50 B.C.E: A "spice" of unknown composition begins to circulate in Greek aristocratic-circles. Accompanying this spice was Gen. 1 in service to Greece at this time. It appears that this spice allowed the aristocracy to perceive the rise and fall of several great empires.
37 B.C.E: In-conjunction with the foundation of Roman Empire, Gen. 1 splits into two separate groups for an unknown reason. This is the first mention of a "Shadow Queen." It appears that one of the two newly formed groups was led by this Shadow Queen.
2 B.C.E: The Shadow Queen has either eliminated or absorbed the opposing forces of Gen. 1. Although, Gen. 2 does not appear until nearly a millennia afterwards.

A more peculiar study would suggest that M.A/I.D faced some interior unrest at this time which led to some breaking off to assist American rebels. These are members of Nox Officum, but no records exist of this conflict between the two parties outside of the spoken word of the Shadow Queen.

Following a botched trade-war between the United States and China, a market collapse and mutual devaluation of currency between the two super-powers creates an economic power vacuum within the global economy. Meanwhile, the European Union has completely dissolved following the "Accelerator Incident" which has created a time-bubble from the western-most point of Germany to the eastern-most point of Ukraine that extents to the tip of Denmark down to lowest most point of Greece. Prior to the meltdown of the perpetual motion powered "Accelerator," an evacuation notice was sounded and mass amount of refugees fled into France which has turned to private-militaries to manage their refugee crisis.
A new political party took power in 2024 C.E. known as the "Gale" party (due to them coming in like a gust of wind and turning over American politics) fronted by a charismatic woman known as "Francesca Turner." The party is taking in numerous amounts of displaced European refugees along with Chinese "victims" of the trade war. Additionally, the Gale Party has abolished the electoral college ensuring that urban centers control United States politics. Regardless of the devaluation of currency the increasing government control in the United States, along with a strong standing military, has kept the country running despite growing unrest.
Japan, fearful of a growing fascist power to their east and a collapsing, starving, dragon to their west has closed their borders. Non-Japanese individuals within the borders at the time of closing have been sent to re-education camps. A strict doctrine of national pride and Bushido has surfaced within the once-democratic country; furthermore, it appears the Japanese were preparing for this contingency due to the influx of government owned automated machinery that can manufacture many materials without the need for trade. It is unknown how they acquired such advanced technology.
Africa has seen a single warlord rise to power with a unifying "voice" that somehow has brought the continent under one banner. This warlord has no name and his/her face is incapable of being committed to memory. A rapid surge of technological understanding and self-sufficient manufacturing within Africa creates the possibility that they might fill the economic power vacuum. The United States has military-advisers within South-Africa assessing the situation to determine if a "policing-action" is needed to quell the new-found rival.
Maidsong academy graduates are being dispatched to all parts of the world in-service to influential figures at a greater pace. It is apparent to members of M.A/I.D that the Shadow Queen is preparing a "power-move" of some sort, but they are dutiful and do not ask questions. Team-Six (us) has been dispatched to the Shadow Queen herself to learn of the growing darkness beneath the Earth's surface that is only perceived by members of M.A/I.D.

Ranking Structure
The organization of M.A/I.D and how ranks are distributed has been changed countless times throughout history to match with demands of any given time period. For example, during time periods of destabilization within the organization (due to outside or interior events) the command structured was adjusted to be more loose with focus on The Shadow Queen's authority. On the other hand, stable time periods tend to create more democratic multi-layered renditions of the M.A/I.D command structure. Currently M.A/I.D is undergoing a transitional period to a more monarchical-structure due to the Shadow Queen invoking the "Shadow Authority" command. The current ranking structure is divided into two major sections "council" and "operators" which dictates what side of work involved individuals will be in. Operators are concerned with on the ground work, while council invokes policy and diplomatic decisions.
-council ranks-
Shadow Queen: The highest rank within M.A/I.D that can only be obtained by being born into it. Oddly enough, the method of being "born" is unclear considering the Shadow Queen has never had a "king" of any sort. The Shadow Queen wields absolute authority that is seldom wielded unless the organization is under extreme circumstances.
Tribune: Only five Tribune's can exist at any given time and can only be appointed by the Shadow Queen herself. These five vote and determine what edicts the courtier members propose are important and worthy of making a decision on. Although, the Tribune's current purpose is null due to the Shadow Authority command being invoked at the current moment.
Courtier: Depending on the time period and stability different amounts of Courtiers exist at any given time. At the most peaceful and stable times around 500 courtiers are given place to debate and propose decisions. During more drastic times the number can shrink down to as little as 50 courtiers (and theoretically even less). Although, at the current moment the Shadow-Court is suspended.
Officer: When a courtier is not serving in the Shadow-Court then they are demoted to the rank of Officer. The rank of Officer has several authority levels from one to nine with less and less individuals serving at each rank. Officer's usually occupy their time with making sure edicts are carried out and M.A/I.D is operating at absolute efficiency. Furthermore, officers of level 6-9 might be assigned a Maiden squad to command.
-operator ranks-
Astre: Despite being the highest operator rank, this rank is stripped of all authority, but is highly revered. Members of the Astre are direct guards of the Shadow Queen and are the most elite M.A/I.D has to offer. Recently, the Astre have been used offensively against various targets of interest. If you know they are coming for you, then you are better off just killing yourself before they reach you.
Instructor: Educators of M.A/I.D, regardless of past affiliations, are treated as having more authority than any graduates unless they become council-ranked members. Instructor's seldom are deployed for operations, but it is becoming a growing possibility in the current year.
Maiden: This is the brunt of M.A/I.D - these individuals are distributed to notable people all over the world to serve under them. Maiden has a substructure of squads with their own pecking-order of authority. Maiden squads can be assigned to an Officer if they are to be activated for any given reason.
Student: The lowest "official" rank of M.A/I.D. that is divided based on the school structure at any given time.
Finally, there is an understood rank of no name because it holds no authority in the organization. Commissioned staff members, weapon maintainers, janitorial staff, cooks, and all other things stemming from the outside world fall into this nameless rank. This is to not say that they are not respected, but they are not seen as having a place.
Commands
The following is a brief list of "authorities" that the Shadow Queen can invoke. This is not the limit of her authority, but simply an efficient way of giving certain commands with merely a command (nor is it all of the commands - just a choice few of the more dramatic ones).
Shadow Authority: This command essentially means that the Shadow Queen is pulling all decision making power to herself and suspending the court for the time being. If this command is invoked, it usually means something is very wrong.
Nox: The "Nox" command has never been issued before in the history of M.A/I.D and is only known by the Shadow Queen and Tribunes. This command dictates that all Maiden's are to kill their current Masters, or if a "Nox Modus" command is issued then a certain group of squads will be given this order.
Flower: A more abstract command that is understood through much training within M.A/I.D - it has been invoked and it has been carried out, but no-one knows what it did.
Suspend: Upon hearing this command Maiden's are to go into hiding for the time being and abandon all duties to their masters until the order is lifted.
Regicide: Another command that has never been issued, but it carries a scary implication. This command orders all members of M.A/I.D to seek out and kill the Shadow Queen herself. Why this command would ever be invoked is not known.
Hobble: Only ever initiated once during WW2 - this command tells members of M.A/I.D to abandon duties to their master and cripple the infrastructure of the surrounding area.
Exodus: This command orders a mass-recall of all members of M.A/I.D to a designated location, or designated locations.
Crucifixion: All members of M.A/I.D or set members will kill themselves.
M.A/I.D has seen many different versions of their equipment throughout the years. The optional equipment of M.A/I.D resembles that of British SAS with several modifications to maintain their "maid-like" appearance. On the other hand, their day to day "standard issue" equipment resembles everyday housekeeping items with duel purposes.
Standard Issue Equipment
M.A/I.D Uniform: This uniform resembles that of the "typical" french maid uniform. It is important to note that the current design is not that of the original modest french-maid uniform and merely resembles it in a black and white pattern along with aesthetic-direction. The first thing to note that the fabric of a M.A/I.D uniform is a weave known as "Steel-Silk." Despite its name, it does not contain steel nor silk, and rather is a artificial fabric made in a tedious and laborious process. The fabric is malleable and grants flexibility while being firm to the touch. Although, this fabric makes the uniform (without any equipment or additions) weigh 15 KG (33 lbs). The added weight grants ballistic-resistant protection and fire-proofing fully around the uniform in equal measures of resistance. Any portion of skin covered by fabric is equally protected. The current weave is graded to resist a 7.62Ć39mm round and below (barring various unique properties to the round). However, a repeated impact within a two inch radius from a firearm (speaking of a 7.62x39mm) have an approximately 25% chance of puncturing the uniform, and the chance only increases with repeated impact.
The M.A/I.D uniforms skirt falls nearly completely to the floor to give a maximum area of protection. The interior of the skirt has optional slots to stow firearms and equipment if additional gear needs to be transported. A M.A/I.D uniform has two accessory pieces of equipment that may or may not be worn - a choker and apron. Both are made of the "Steel-Silk" weave and offer additional protection, but some choose to not wear said additions (or only choose to wear the apron when on cleaning duty). Members of M.A/I.D are falsely believed to wear high-heels - this is not true. Typically, members of M.A/I.D wear black combat boots. Furthermore, all members of M.A/I.D wear gloves, but this piece of equipment will be detailed later.
Clot-Sponge: A clot-sponge operates as a normal sponge would (and a damn fine one at that) but when torn and inserted into a wound it can stop bleeding and temporarily bridge arteries to continue blood-flow. This effect is not permanent.
Needle-Duster: A feather duster that operates normally until the bottom of the duster is pressed for one-second. This generates a mild electrical current that stimulates strands of the duster and cause them to become erect. These follicles are made of "Steel-Silk" and turns the once harmless duster into a deadly club capable of cleanly spattering through the skull of a man. Some members of M.A/I.D also pluck these fabrics from the Needle-Duster while they are stimulated with electricity and throw them as precise projectiles. The strands stay stimulated for about ten-seconds after the current stops.
Tox-Cloth: Polishing cloth that has a duel purpose. It is non-reactive to many materials that need to be polished (Example: cups, windows, and so on) and said materials are safe to handle/use afterwards, but if contacted with human skin it temporally locks up muscles via some classified property. These muscles stay locked for 3 seconds to a full minute depending on the targets physical-fitness, conditioning, and willpower. This item is central to many of the M.A/I.D originated martial arts.
M.A/I.D Gloves: Despite the standard name - these gloves have a multitude of purposes. Despite being slender in appearance, each weigh a staggering 2 KG (Approx 5 pounds) (Making the total weight of M.A/I.D members standard uniform shoot up to 19 KG (Approx 41 lbs) which is why members tend to avoid scales while in uniform). The added weight allows for several neat features - these gloves are coated in a classified substance that is nigh-impossible to cut or alter. Therefore, the rare power weapon, which relies on breaking down particles, has no effect on these gloves. These gloves are another key aspect of M.A/I.D martial arts allowing them to grab blades, cover gun barrels with their hands, and so on. Furthermore, M.A/I.D gloves allow them to scale surfaces with some rivets in them, but not enough to climb on (This effect does not apply to smooth walls). Finally, a M.A/I.D has a choice to get these gloves in either white or black.
Lance Mop: The most straight forward standard issue item in the M.A.I.D, but arguably the most reliable weapon. These come in two forms - projectile or blade (or sometimes hybrid forms). Blade forms have an extendable bladed tip that can extend from where a mop head would normally be attached. On the other hand, the projectile form loads a magazine of pellet-like ammunition. Using magnetic propulsion, the pellets are propelled up the "mop's" shaft through several other magnets at such a pace that alters the pellet into a state of "energy" which can penetrate most standard-issue armors of the current era. Unfortunately, the recoil and lack of sights makes accurately firing a projectile version of the lance-mop a daunting task.

Flower: A hair-clip in the design of a rose. These are special gifts given directly from the Shadow-Queen. It seems these items have some sort of unknown effect, but no one knows the exact use of said items.
MLMR 5.56/.45: The "Multi-loaded Magnetic Rifle" is a compact bullpup rifle/submachine gun hybrid capable of loading 5.56x45mm and .45 ACP with seamless transition. The rifle utilizes a magnetically charged barrel to further propel bullets at a greater speed. This is coupled with the MLMR's unique bullets which are not the standard bullet/case combination - bullets are contained within an ultra-light plastic shell with minimal gunpowder. Essentially, the gunpowder merely acts as a propellant to get the bullet into the magnetically charged barrel that propels the projectile at super-sonic speeds with nearly no recoil.
The advantages of the MLMR are the ultra light ammo, minimal recoil, comparatively quiet sound (Slightly louder than a silenced rifle), and the armor penetration enabled by the super-sonic speeds. These particular advantages make it the ideal weapon for quick operations in an urban environment.
The disadvantages are the MLMR only accepts ammunition specifically designed for it, high-velocity grants armor penetration yet the speed in-which the bullet travels usually causes the round to pass directly through the target with minimal internal damage, and the magnetic mechanism is battery powered so the weapon is vulnerable to EMP pulses (The battery lasts for a substantial amount of time and is easily replaced). Furthermore, field-stripping the MLMR is quite complicated and cleaning is a finicky task.
If the magnetic barrel loses power, the MLMR is still operable, but to a substantially weaker effect. The weapon loses rapid-fire capability and the velocity of the rounds is cut down by 3/4ths.
A unique feature granted in later models of the MLMR (Known as the MLMR-2) is the ability to field-strip and modify the weapon-system to accept conventional ammunition; however, this modification causes the weapon to lose the ability to seamlessly transition between 5.56x45MM and .45 ACP - one ammunition type must be selected.
In-conclusion, M.A/I.D utilizes this weapon either in defense of a location, or a blitz operation that will not be an extended deployment. These two uses fit the primary combat use of M.A/I.D which makes the MLMR the preferred battle-rifle of M.A/I.D.
Royal-Carapace: A particular rare item of alien origin. It is a small metallic chip that connects to the nape of the neck. With a single thought, the individual is enveloped in skin-tight, flexible, resilient black metal that has very little weight. Extended use of this item can prove fatal considering the item physically exhausts the body, but it makes the user nearly invulnerable to most conventional weapons. M.A/I.D possesses approximately 302 Royal-Carapace chips and an additional 12 chips that are a golden-variant with no (known) additional benefit.
Royal-Carapaces can be worn on the neck at all times with no ill-effect. Particularly valuable members of M.A/I.D are gifted a Royal-Carapace directly from the Shadow Queen and are expected to never take them off. If a member wearing the Royal Carapace dies, then it is of the utmost priority to retrieve the chip.

The supernatural and the occult are nigh non-existent to the average person. This is not solely because the supernatural is well hidden, rather the supernatural typically manifests in a subtle manner infrequently. On the other side of the same coin, the occult and its practitioners rarely wield enough power to where making oneself known will be beneficial.
As one might imply, the supernatural and occult are two separate concepts that are closely related. The general public's definition of the supernatural and occult are far from the technical definition.
Supernatural: Unexplained happenings not of direct human origin.
Occult: Unexplained/Explained happenings of human origin that goes beyond previously understood principles of existence (NOTE: Theoretically speaking, occult phenomenons could become commonplace if the greater society became aware of it and accepted it).
Below is a list of supernatural and occult occurrences with additional information on each topic.
Supernatural
An unsettling phenomenon that has been dubbed a combination of "Beckon" and "Blip" due to how it manifests. Individuals experiences a beckonblip report feeling an overwhelming sense of purpose for a brief period of time, some even calling it comforting, and they begin move towards a voice of no words calling them. Some individuals report seeing an overwhelming sheen of darkness envelop the world for the duration the of the beckonblip.
It appears beckonblips only happen in specific locations very infrequently and for a brief time (Hence the "blip" portion of the name).
REPORTED LOCATIONS: - Atlanta - Glasgow - Jerusalem - New York city - Paris - Rio de janeiro - Tokyo - The Vatican
Many scientists concluded this could simply be a case of mass-hysteria/opportunity to get attention. On the other hand, various respected individuals, most notably Dr. Tanya Romanov, propose that unseen mechanisms could be preemptively activating to lure mass-populations to specific locations. Various excavations of locations experiencing beckonblips occasionally have found nothing and have lost funding. Mysteriously, one of these dig sites experienced an unknown detonation that killed approximately half of the crewmen.
Many describe a reoccurring figure that has caused ruin in the lives of several unrelated individuals. The strange thing about this individual is that when speaking of his misdeed to others who have encountered the individual two things happen...
1.) The individuals who have encountered "Blank Face" immediately know that they have encountered the same person.
2.) No matter how hard they try to recall there appearance, name, or any other discernible features they cannot remember. They only remember that it was a male and they had a "blank-looking" face.
It is important to understand that his face does have "facial features" however they can only draw a "blank" when describing him.

Theories range from this being a case of mass hysteria, all the way to this being the "Devil" himself. The amount of people suddenly being able to acknowledge the relationship between unrelated events cements this as a factual occurrence, but there is no current natural explanation for this event.
An alleged division of an unknown organization (presumably a nations military) that utilizes "phantom-like" soldiers capable of projecting emotional trauma into an enemy force. The first instance in-which the "The Voodoo Squad" (Name taken from the word "VOODOO" being painted on the side of their air-carrier according to two sources) came into the public consciousness was in the initially fictional science-fiction novel "A Trauma. A Phantom. A Warrior" written by notorious conspiracy theorist and host of IntelFights "John Stalvern."
The novel was a first person account of a soldier's service in Afghanistan as an infantryman for the United States Army. The name of the main character is "Johnson Stalwart" and the novel was critically torn apart for being poorly written and the main character being an obvious self-insert for Mr. Stalvern. It followed him as he served in a fictitious proxy war against Russia in the Middle-East - his platoon is ambushed by supernatural phantom soldiers and Johnson Stalwart must survive against all odds. Two months after the novel's release Mr. Stalvern, on his internet show IntelFights, went on to claim the novel based on his actual experiences in his single year of military service before being dishonorably discharged for sexual misconduct (Mr. Stalvern claims this was the work of the deepstate to silence him and no such misconduct occurred).
Initially, this became an internet meme and was the subject of further mockery. Many people assumed Mr. Stalvern's claim at this being non-fiction was an attempt to salvage both his book and military career. It was not until LiveLeak user "Poughkeepsie" uploaded an ominous 33 minute long found-footage titled "Gone Fishing" captured off the GoPro of a deceased ISIS soldier. The death of the soldier was either omitted from the found footage, or not captured. The head of the deceased individual was turned sideways facing an open front-door of a house peering out to the center of a village. Various ISIS fighters are depicted firing at seemingly nothing while frantically chanting Islamic prayer. The passage of time seems to be incorrect and it goes from a bright noon to nearly complete darkness over 32 minutes of the video. The fighters depicted in the video take their own lives one by one and at the 30 minute mark all fighters have taken their own lives.
The last minute of the footage is the damning bit. Light returns to the village and an airship lands with the word "VOODOO" painted on the side. The bay opens and then closes before leaving.
The alleged "Voodoo Squad" is never seen but many have proposed they either are cloaked or are wearing a substance that makes recording them impossible. Mr. Stalvern attempted to view the found footage and had to stop viewing and preemptively end his show upon seeing the footage. This is unusual considering Mr. Stalvern typically shows graphic material on his show with very little reaction to said material.
Many others since the publishing of "Gone Fishing" have come forward with anecdotal stories about the Voodoo Squad and supposed evidence, but nearly all of these cannot be confirmed or are quickly debunked. Mr. Stalvern refuses to comment about the "Gone Fishing" tape. Some believe the footage to be staged, but no conclusive evidence has been to discredit the validity of said footage.
Occult
A recently discovered phenomenon within the human mind. Dr. Tanya Romanov famously fell victim to a psychic magician Bailey Reeves and was ordered to fall unconscious - in-which she did, twice. The television program was intended to debunk the magician who was famous for also practicing hypnotherapy that had an uncanny supernatural quality to it. The broadcast ignited a surge of interest in the magician and he has enjoyed great success; however, he himself has kept quiet about his abilities beyond that demonstration.
This led Dr. Tanya Romanov to seek funding in her country of Ukraine to research a "new" form of science which became known as Nu-Science. She has made great strides in many discoveries, but her most constant work is in the field of psionics. She discovered a new particle in the brain dubbed the "Psidicide."
Psidicides - Recently discovered cells within the brains of mammals only detectable by a specialized scan. A standard amount of psidicides is defined as 100%. Psionic "Powers" will become apparent at as little as 101%.
Psychics - Individuals who have over 100% psidicides in their brain. This increased amount allows them to utilize naturally emitted electro-magnetic frequencies (with training) to manipulate the psidicides in other mammal's brains. The effects psychics can induce upon other brains varies depending on both training and psidicide count (NOTE: Some with small psidicide amounts above 100% can accomplish great psychic feats with training). Some of these effects include: mind control, mind reading, hallucinations, suggestion, paralysis, and spontaneous combustion.
Psionic powers can only effect the mind of other mammels; therefore, many people have trouble believing psychic claims. Media has depicted such individuals being able to tell the future or lift boulders with their mind. The actual manifestation is far more subtle and nuanced. It is inconclusive whether or not psychic individuals are a recent occurrence or have always been part of human history.
A Broad Overview of Thanaton A separatist state born after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 located near Artyom, Russia. This position has caused Thanaton to become close associates with the following nations: Russia, Japan (Current year), China, and North Korea; however, Thanaton has also been employed infrequently by other nations such as The United States of America and Israel during the peak of conflicts in the Middle East.
Thanaton is formally recognized as a district of Russia by much of the world, but the truth is that it is independent of Russia and merely holds close ties to the nation (despite working against Russia's interests infrequently). The reason for much of the world not recognizing the legitimacy of Thanaton is for several reasons:
1.) Approximately 80 percent of the nations economy results from its citizens being employed as mercenaries by other nations. The other 20 percent results from a combination of pillaging, arms dealing, and alleged human trafficking.
2.) Thanaton does not adhere to any form of war-time law. They do not shy away from utilizing white-phosphorous, or clearing out a hard-point with cyanide gas. These numerous violations has given typically reactionary peacekeeping forces the order to proactively engage Thanatonian mercenaries if spotted.
3.) The most grave and serious mark against Thanaton is its use of selective breeding within its population to create optimal soldiers for the modern battlefield. This attempt at optimizing the soldier has created the Thanatonian race which can either be born with above average combat capabilities, or crippling health defects. A major point of contention commonly cited as grounds to chastise Thanaton is its caste system which designates a specific caste to be "breeding-stock." Although, in Thanaton's defense said caste ranks highly in their order of reverence.
The Thanatonian
A closer look at the individuals of Thanaton creates a more nuanced perspective of their warrior-nation. Thanatonians, despite being relatively recent, are identified as their own race which also has their own unique language. This language is as a combination of Chinese and Russian known as Thanish. It is referred to as a brash, forceful language, of limited vernacular with intentional exemptions of words referring to concepts such as "love" and "peace."
A closer study of Thanish and the relation to the overall Thanatonian society demonstrates that the language itself is a form of conditioning from an early age to disconnect "love" and "peace" from their culture. This is done to make remorseless soldiers who can take on any contract asked of them, but also enables the act of breeding to be free from romantic feelings.
This attempt to overcome empathy and love via language control has seen mixed results within the Thanatonians. It is important to note that Thanish has over 50 words referring to honor and pride in varying forms. Many sociologists believe that the numerous variations (which have not all been recorded) have become their words for love. Therefore, love still infects Thanatonian culture, but is seen as a breach of law considering all breeding must be regulated.
The appearance of Thanatonians are typically stocky white-haired caucasians with slightly upturned eyes and thin lips. Selective breeding of females has seen recent generations of women being comparable in size to men, yet lacking equal muscle-mass, but more than the average woman. The white-hair was derived from a variance of partial albinism that merely targeted the hair which became a desired trait to have in Thanatonian culture, which has made them a distinct force.

From an early age Thanatonians are taught the values of nationalistic pride, identity, and honor. Their society is not without mercy and it takes the form of them owning up to the consequences of shoddy breeding attempts. Those born with mental retardation, crippled limbs, and other severely debilitating ailments are expected to be cared for and protected - approximately 20 percent of Thanatonian income goes towards caring for these individuals, which is a growing point of contention in Thanatonian society.
Finally, Thanatonians have begun to modify their bodies with cybernetics. Some see this as impure and against their values, but other Thanatonians see this as the natural progression of their society. Many Thanatonians who have fallen victim to their limited gene-pool and were born with a disposition to various organ failure or complications have replaced their faulty organs with cybernetic replacements. Both sides tend to agree that cybernetics should be used to counteract some of their genetic issues, but one side believes it should also be used to actively advance their combat potential.
Thanaton Caste System and Gender Roles
Thanaton has a caste system that operates under a partial direct democracy. Only those who have risen into the Reverence caste and above have votes. Some castes can be skipped under the right conditions - a member can never be demoted to a lower class, they can only be moved to an equivalent caste or higher.
The Reminders:This caste is where all severely genetically defected individuals exist. They live their lives performing basic tasks within their ability and being cared for.
Fresh-Blood: This is the caste that all Thanatonians are born into. Additionally, under the rare circumstance an outsider is recruited, they are placed in this rank. They are all seen as the trainees and children of the higher-castes. There is no set amount of time one exists in this caste. The only way out of this caste is to successfully accompany three mercenary operations, or pass the Thanatonian trial by combat.
Contractor: This caste is where most Thanatonians live and die in. They accomplish many tasks from training, organizing contracts, fulfilling contracts, caring for The Reminders, and so on. This difference in tasks is carefully managed by the The Authority who preform a series of tasks to find out the proficiency of each individual. Although, regardless of proficiency, all contractors are eventually deployed at one time or another to preform mercenary work for the nation.
The Pool: The next caste is a recently formed one of selected females who are designated as genetically fit to be bred. This recent formation of this caste resulted from the declining population due to casualties. These women live lavish and relaxed lives free from all wartime responsibility. The initial reaction to this life is good, but women in this cast tend to suffer from depression over time. All castes including this one and above can participate in the democratic process.
Contractor-Superior: Contractors who have been recognized by the authority as worthy to participate in the democratic process. Furthermore, the men (and occasionally women) are allowed to participate in the breeding process because they are considered genetically sound enough to do so.
The Pure: An elite force of Thanatonians who act as a secret police within Thanaton and also are in charge of espionage and counter-espionage efforts.
The Authority: A caste that only consists of three people who propose reforms in Thanaton. Direct democracy is held on the first of every month to go over these reforms. These individuals serve for life and a new Authority member is voted in once one dies.
Gender roles in Thanaton has gone through numerous reforms. Initially, Thanaton promoted an absolute meritocracy with equality in all things. However, this led to many women of prime genetic condition to serve as contractors and die in the field. Thus, a revised policy pertaining to gender was decided upon. Women who are not considered prime genetic material can exist as contractors, but if a woman has at-least 30 percent prime genetic material then they are subject to become part of The Pool. Although, this can be avoided if said "prime" women overcompensate their skills and talents in relation to their male peers. This overcompensation and extra effort on some women part to stay as a contractor has created the fear of Thanatonian women in the outside world.
