Would you like to see a magic trick? - Fu is proud of his stage magic gadgets that he likes to show off or work at developing something new to show off.
Meticulous - everything has to be just so. His creations tend to be works of art.
Background
From the time Fu was little, he was a natural engineer with a nose in a book. He was always studying thing. Because of that he became good at mathematics, a few languages, and the sciences. He came by naturally as both his parents were bright. His father was a metallurgist, who refined metals, and crafted fine swords. His mother was a teacher from a diplomatic family. Fu was to follow in the family business making money crafting and selling weapons. The problem was Fu was a boy who had the grace of someone with two left feet as he was growing up. In the martial training he received he did poorly. An inherent belief that if you have to draw a weapon you already lost the battle on top of his lanky gangly limbs that always seemed to want to go the wrong way. Glasses helped with the second part but the first was just part of Fu’s nature.
At a young age, Fu was taking things apart and figuring out how it worked. Fu made his first gadget when he was eight. It was an extendable arm that had a mirror on it. He used it to spy on the neighbor girl, till it got stuck extended and hit her window. Then he spent a few weeks hiding from her and her father. Lather he made spring loaded devices that propelled things across the room. Knives, bolt, darts, little grappling hooks, rope, he tried them all, studying each how they flew. With the scrap metals in his father shop, he started learning to make things with metal. The most useful was a small grapple and line that he uses for lots of different tasks.
Next he started to learn chemistry, smoke bombs, small flares, and small explosives. This was in secret work. In his mother library behind some old books was his grandfather research books and notes. This was where Fu learned to make his first black powder smoke bomb. Next came fire crackers, and then came small rockets. It was when he tried to make a device that could light and shoot multiple rockets that he got into trouble. The trouble came in the form of an explosion in his father’s workshop. The explosion was bigger than he expected and did more damage. Fu did the only thing a boy could do.
He grabbed his knife, some of the tools he made, and the books and engineering books and fled.
He found work in a traveling carnival making smoke bombs for the magicians and clowns, fireworks, and repairing equipment. He eventually he started to learn some stage magic. His presentation and style were good but his gadgets sometimes failed him ruining the trick.
In the world of romance, Fu is a born loser. He misses the signs and signals that women give. When the Carnival Master’s daughter was found in his room, less most of her clothes Fu was invited to leave, Shot at actually. Fu could have explained it as he really did not know the girl was there. She said she wanted to see a new magic trick and Fu was trying to get it ready when she disrobed. Her father walked in and before he knew it Fu was on the run.
This lead him to the port where he over heard a conversation in the bar while trying to hide from the guards. The next day the city guards had also joined into the search for him. They even had posters that labeled him as a thief. Since he knew their ship was going to leave port, he stowed away.
There was multiple ways one could stow away on a ship. You could act like a deck hand and grab a box and walk up. You could climb up over the rails and hide. Both of these had a high chance of being spotted and thrown overboard. So he took a different option. He climbed into a crate that was loaded with onions. Prying the top off was easy. Getting in and getting the top backing place was easy. Four raps of a heavy hammer and the crate went completely dark. He felt the crate move and was carried by two dock workers down to one of the secondary cargo hulls. Things were going according plan till the crate was tipped upside down and a second crate was placed on top of it.
Onions are not comfortable, but he had to wait till the ship to leave dock and be underway. In what seemed to be forever he felt a dramatic change in the ship’s movement. It was the change as the onions rolled more and pressed into his back causing his kidney’s to hurt. With his fingers he found the seam of the crate and pried with his knife till the board cracked working his way around the crate. With his knees and back he pressed till the crate opened dropping him and half the onions on the floor.
