Two years ago, eight people went missing in the small North Dakotan town of Caulder's Hollow. The incident rocked the nation as they'd somehow disappeared at the same time from entirely different locations. There was nothing in their backgrounds that tied them together. They were a mixture of Caulder Hollow natives, tourists, and passers-by. Yet, when the clock struck 11:43 PM, they were gone. The forestry agency searched the surrounding wilderness. The authorities turned the town upside down. There were alerts sent to the Canadian border, and federal agents did statewide sweeps. Yet, the eight were never found. The news died down eventually, and the town went back to normal. Well, as normal as it could be considering it lured tourists from all over trying to discover what happened to the missing eight of Caulder's Hollow.

Our story isn't about them, or at least at this moment it isn't. They are players in this grand game, but they're the obstacles, not the entrants. But, I'm getting ahead of myself.

Tonight, in the early spring of April, Caulder's Hollow was about to receive some very surprising news. Mara Swaim, a recent high school graduate and one of the missing eight, was found on the banks of the Pembina River outside the Evershine Outpost. She'd been discovered by a couple of students from Hightower High. She was unconscious at the time, but she was alive. To hear the teens tell the story, the door to the Evershine Outpost was bright purple only for a moment as Mara Swaim tumbled out. In a flash of light, the door returned back to normal, and Mara was there. One might assume they were drinking, but the next bit of their story couldn't have been falsified. Mara was dressed in clothing that didn't resemble anything on Earth, and it was made of a material that seemed to be both liquid and solid at the same time. On her hip was a globe made of transparent plastic that held a small, clockwork creature. On her back, sprouting from her flesh like veins of gold and crystal, were huge angelic-like wings. In one hand was a dagger, seemingly to be made out of the same material as her clothing. Blood coated the tip of the blade. Mara's forearm was bleeding from what looked to be a self-imposed wound. When later cleaned by the paramedics, they noticed it glowed, luminescent in the light of the ambulance. More so, it said something...

News broke of Mara's return like a thunderclap across the valley. It'd only been an hour, but the world was already watching. Maybe with her return, the other seven would also come back? That'd be quite some hopeful thinking, considering the exact opposite happened that evening.

At 11:43 PM, you feel this gnawing sensation in the pit of your stomach. You might question where it came from, but you know what you have to do. You have to find the nearest door and walk through it. Stumbling through whatever obstacles that come between you and it, the pain subsides when you grab the knob and turn. The world disorients for a second. Your awareness feels like it's on the inside of your body. Your innards exposed to air so cold it burns like the sun. A prickling sensation passes over your extremities and into the core of your body. Unsure if your heart is on the inside or out, you feel it skip a beat. And then another. Was it slowing down?

Next thing you know everything snaps back into reality. Your skin feels on its skeleton where it should be. Yet, the odd tingling sensation won't leave you. You look around to find that the landscape around you is far from Caulder's Hollow. The sky above is a deep black and purple, eight moons hanging in the air. The ground underneath your feet is compacted earth, but there are slivers of glowing areas akin to metallic veins. You turn around to see that the door you passed through is fading away. You can't get your fingers around the knob before it dissipates entirely. You become aware of a large corrugated metal sign you hadn't seen before. A buzzing fluorescent bulb points towards what's written on it.

A BRIEF IDEA

This roleplay is an otherworld (isekai for you anime kids) game where a group of normal people from our world, Caulder's Hollow to be exact, enter a world at the edge of space, time, and reality. In this world, the rules of those three don't apply. Magic, technology, varied species, culture, technology, etc. have all collided into Anigma Fluxx. Its denizens and infrastructure brought in the same way you were.

The premise is that you are to make your way through this world in hopes of getting home. Yet, it won't be as easy. You'll have chances to "evolve" your characters by using artefacts on yourself to achieve something you couldn't on Earth. And you may have to, considering the dangers of this world. There are also the other missing eight, well seven now, that you can assume are somewhere inside of Anigma Fluxx. Your character will have a tie to one of them that we will discuss.

This isn't meant to be a long roleplay, but hopefully an exciting one with a lot of interesting choices to make. Will your character want to come home in the end? Will they learn the secrets of Anigma Fluxx? Will they find their lost friend/loved one/family/etc.? Will they still be human enough to care about any of that?

Sounds like an original idea (to me.) The only question I have right now (and it's petty) will it use real photos for characters or anime? I personally cannot get into roleplays if anime/cartoon pictures are used. ^^;

I hope it's original, or someone's been stealing my thoughts (again.)

As much as character pictures go, I'm allowing photography and/or realistic art, considering this is about characters from Earth and the spoopy what-nots that can befall them. I would lean towards photography if it wasn't for the otherworldly elements I have to account for. Also hardships of finding some photography where the person isn't just gosh darn gorgeous. Not that there isn't some, but I've gotta find some grotesque portraits.

Hmmm, that's a great point. If you end up making this a roleplay it might be the first one I've been in that I'll be willing to use an illustrated picture ^^

I probably shouldn't, considering my slate is pretty full as it is, but if nothing else, I will be watching this. It's a lovely idea and one I would love to see flourish!

I was asked off-thread about the player expectations, and I figure this'll be a good place to discuss them. I didn't really put much up there, because if the hook didn't get you... then the expectations sure as hell won't. Anyway, this RP is casual--meaning that I won't require novellas for posts. That being said, I threw in the advanced tag because I'll be asking a lot from your imagination. Posting will be every few days to once a week. I will lean on once a week, but if we're small enough and get a good pace, then I'll keep that pace. But I do understand having crap-o-tastic weeks. So, I'll be lenient in that regard.

Character creation will heavily involve setting up your living, breathing, pay-check earning (or not,) person in Caulder's Hollow. You won't have to worry about deciding powers or abilities. Those will be given in-game, at random, but you can always message me and talk about possible directions you want your character to go. I have DM'd a lot of DnD and other TTRPGs, this shit is my jam. Also, knowing that, I imagine that you can see some resemblance to Numenera up in here.

What it boils down to is this: I want this RP to not be too hard to jump into, but I want you to jump into it with a full character. Posting should be fun and easy. Though, in some situations, there may be more I ask of you. The big thing is that we all get along and have fun. I'm chill and rarely ever over-serious. So, yay?

Well, I'd be honored then. I'll keep you up to date on how this goes. I don't need too much interest, as this is a small group, but before I put in the time I need to do the crime I need some interest. So, thanks!

Thanks! And you know I'd always love to have you, but I totally understand. I just need my RPs to stop going the way of the dodo.

How will magic work in this world? @psych0pomp

The "magic" in this world will be based on one of two ways. One will be artefact-based, which will give a singular ability to someone in return for them fusing with it. This is meant to be the easiest way to get powers without it being too detrimental to the character. And abilities can range from simple things like "ice touch" to "electromagnetic headaches" to "understands the secret language of light patterns." I'll write up exactly how it'll be used in the RP, but that's the basic gist. It's meant to flavor the experience and be helpful without fully defining a character. And their duration is solely dependant on the level of power, ranging from "low powered" being all the time to "decently powered" being able to be used once a scene or two. Basic things like that.

The other way to get "magic" will be discussed in-game and come up later. But it's more powerful and has a far higher cost.

Alright! That's enough interest for me to finish out the Lore and put up an IC. I'll ping everyone that showed interest and link it up when I'm through. The biggest thing is going to be putting together the character sheet (I want to have a different flavor considering.) So, this might take a day or two. Feel free to continue to ask questions! It helps me flesh out things in the lore that I might otherwise forget to.

Thanks everyone! I'm stoked.

EDIT: Whoops, double post. My brain is sleepy.

Not at all. I think we can fit one more in. Here's the link to the OOC. Something that I should have posted, but I instead just tagged people.
