You're on a first date, and you ask your date what their favorite novel is. They answer, and you immediately know this relationship won't work. What novel was it?

Twilight doesn't count. No freebies.

Bonus points if you give a reason.

50 Shades series. Terrible representation of BDSM, to put it mildly.

Ready Player One or Ready Player Two.

Alternatively, The Turner Diaries and I really don't need to explain why.

I came here to say Jordan Peterson, too, lol.

Anything by Richard Dawkins. None of his books should be your favourite book. Just say you're an asshole who argues for the sake of arguing and go.

ETA: Before anyone comes at me for this, I'm an atheist myself. Dawkins' fanboys are the worst.

Hey! I was at work! ...and I needed time to think.

My answer would be The Sword of Truth series. It was so poorly written I put it down after 20 pages.

Theres also a few other books but I more dislike the authors than the works.

As valid as you are, that isn't a novel.

Sword of Truth... I think as a 'favorite' novel it would be a bit of a concern, but I don't know that it would be an instant no.

I guess it's ironic that, even though I made the thread about novels, I totally feel more strongly on certain books based on their authors than the books themselves, so I just chose the most overhyped book I've actually picked up in which I have no strong feelings one way or the other about the author. It was a few years ago too but the dialogue that I read was just unacceptably bad when I read it.

@POOHEAD189 Admittedly I've only read the first book of the Sword of Truth and part of the second one before giving up.

Man, you two would hate the millions of other general self-help books that get published every year.

So because I know most readers will own a wide variety of books and novels, whether they actually liked them or not. (Political, spiritual and historical minds, especially.) There's not too many books that I can imagine getting that kind of immediate negative reaction from me. With one potential exception...(And even then, I know people can gift you bad books as a joke sometimes. So...)

Oh, wait. I just realized that most previous answers had failed to meet the proper context of that question. So I wrote this by proxy. Though now I realize the question wasn't "what book would make you judge a person's character, if you merely saw this in their possession." And that it was someone fondly gushing over the work in question. So my answer is even more certain. Because I refuse to believe that any rational person would include these in their favorites.

My answer: A modern president's or career politician's autobiography or novel. (Take your pick, it probably applies.)

Because I can't actually think of a pragmatic reason to buy that, aside from a celebrity-esque worship of that particular figure. Since one, you're learning fuck all. (Nothing the internet couldn't tell you, at the very least.) Two, you're supporting a ghostwriter and are probably the kind of person whose unaware of that. Third, I can't think of a more boring and pretentious self-indulgence, than having to read about a professional bullsh*t artist and how they'll be fabricating their own past to me.

So in conclusion, you probably won't get any funny or good writing out of it. There will be no interesting styles or subject matter, that most fiction provides. You learn nothing, in comparison to other better political or historical literature. Nor will you be able to improve yourself, assuming you take it as life advice. (And you can't even fap to itβ€”or hell maybe that IS the demographic who buys it. I don't know.)

I digress. If you want to show your political affiliation that badly. Just get a funny t-shirt or something.

"Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss.

No offense to the people that love that book, but it's about the Gary-est Stu that ever Stu-d, and his (not literally) manic pixie dream girl who states that she doesn't deserve him. So instead, he has sex with everything else and bemoans that he's a too smart orphan, and no one gets him. The end. Except that it's not, because the third book hasn't been written. And it's been 10 years. So, none of the above can be tied up into a believable package. I will die mad about it. Thank you for asking.

And third anything Ayn Rand. Also please add freaking "Infinite Jest." I just decided to go with something that I could explain my dislike for beyond a gut reaction of "NOPE."

I by no means think that is a relationship dealbreaker, but I do think it's a bit overrated so I can see why you might think that. I enjoyed it when I read it, but honestly not a lot happened during the book and they sort of stretched some uninteresting parts for many, many pages.

In defence of Rothfuss and Name of the Wind, I think a lot of people potentially misread Kvothe as a positive heroic archetype, when if anything I think he's meant to something of a negative one. Kvothe is brilliant and amazing etc. But it doesn't get him anywhere, he continually self sabotages and fucks things up through his arrogance and pride, he's literally his own worst enemy in a lot of the shit that happens to him. And we know he's gonna do something truly terrible by story's end. Kvothe is not a good person a lot of time, and I don't think Rothfuss holds him up as a paragon of virtue or even someone you should aspire to be. I certainly didn't read it that way.

But discussing Name of the Wind is not the point of this thread, so here's my contribution:

This whole thing reminded me for section I read in the comedian Frankie Boyle's autobiography, My Shit Life So Far, about a one night stand he had with an older woman, and how he never came back because of the contents of her bookcase.

It sort of ended badly because she had this shelf of books under the TV. It contained every commercial book that you'd seen people reading on a train for the previous few years: Captain Corelli's Mandolin and so on. I thought it was an ironic statement, a sort of joke, and complimented her on what I took to be some kind of artistic critique about the mundanity of modern culture. It transpired that this was her actual library and our utter incompatibility was suddenly obvious. Still, it was fun. Two days may actually be the perfect length for a relationship.
