THERE is a world where humans never came to be and instead animals of all kinds evolved in their place. They learned to build tools for hunting and gathering, to communicate, and to make fire. For thousands of years, the various tribes fought and went to war for land, resources, food, and water. Prey species were fruitful and multiplied as they learned to farm and defend themselves from predators. And as more and more species became intelligent and anthropomorphic, the slower-growing predators struggled to survive and feed themselves.

ONE fateful winter, a starving pack of wolves approached a community of bunnies, not to hunt them, but to ask for help. The bunnies presented them with soy-milk and soybeans to make it through that harsh winter. When spring came, the bunnies taught them how to farm. Then they made more allies, the turkeys, who showed them how to spot garden pests such as beetles and cicadas and how to tell them apart from good insects such as bees and butterflies. This symbiotic relationship between carnivore, omnivore, and herbivore resulted in the greatest harvest they had ever seen, and the wolves finally were able to rest, no longer needing to hunt. Together, they shared a great feast to celebrate their good fortune. This was the first Thanksgiving.

TODAY, civilization has advanced to modern-day human standards. The world of Animalia has plumbing, electricity, telephone and internet, cars, and all forms of transportation. Modern agriculture and farming have made plant and insect-based protein widely available. Predators and prey try their best to live peacefully together, for the good of all animal-kind, but not all fears and instincts have vanished.

OVERCOMING stereotypes may the hardest part of any animal's life, but it is not the only problem they will face. Animals will most likely face speciesism, sizeism, sexism, or classism at some point in their life. Predation and hate crimes are still quite common, and cities often have black markets and gangs. This sandbox-style slice-of-life roleplay will follow our many characters as they struggle to make their way through life.

Mature themes such as drugs, politics, religion, violence, bullying, sexuality, sexism, and racism are permitted and encouraged to add depth to our story and characters. Swearing is permitted. Sex scenes should fade-to-black.

Main Setting

The roleplay takes place on an alternate Earth which is very much like our own. The geography is the same. Much of history is like our own, from caveman living to the Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, and today. The main difference is that animals started to become anthropomorphic, sapient, and intelligent, starting somewhere around the time of the Great Flood (Noah's Arc).

The roleplay will start in modern-day New York City, the city of opportunity and the great melting pot of the nation. Unlike many smaller cities and towns like Wolfboro, Hampsterdam, and New Bunswick, New York has a wide demographic of species. It is the city where "anyone can be anything."

Many of our characters are attending the well-renowned Eukary University, a college found in the suburbs, but you are free to play as anybody you want. You can be a college student, a teacher, or somebody working or living in the city or beyond.

Important Places

Animalia will have a mix of both real and fictional places. Feel free to use real-life locations or make them up as desired. I will update this section as more places are introduced.

Eukary University

Eukary University (EU) is a reputable college known for its very high diversity statistics and a broad range of majors. It has merit and athletic grants and scholarships. The college is partially State-funded, so tuition is fairly low and enrollment is very high. It is one of the most popular schools in the nation.

School Colors and Mascot

Eukary University is all about diversity and including all types of animals. Its name comes from the domain name 'Eukarya', which includes plants, animals, and fungi. The root word roughly translates to "good seed," which ties into the University's mission to help every student grow and flourish into something spectacular.

School colors are Green and White with Gold/Yellow accents. There are no school uniforms, but sports uniforms are usually mainly green with white with gold/yellow accents. Sports uniforms often are embroidered with the player's last name, number, or a big "EU" (for Eukary University).

The school's academic symbol is an Acorn with Oak Leaves.
The school's sports mascot is an Angry Acorn.

Majors and Training

If you can think of it, they can teach it. They have traditional majors, pre-med, craftsman trades and vocational classes.

The Campus

The campus is like a small town, just a little removed from the rest of New York City. It is surrounded by a few hundred feet of trees on all sides. At the very front, near the city streets, you will a fence with a large gate leading to the Administrative Building, which is where you will find officials, financial offices, and teacher offices. There is streetside parking and small parking lots on both the left and right sides of the Administrative Building.

Immediately behind Administrative is two buildings. On the left is History & People Studies, and on the right is Languages & Literature. These subjects are often intertwined, so too are their buildings with a connecting bridge. Most classes in these departments are taught in large auditorium-style classes.

You can continue under the bridge to find the Eukary Quad. This is an area with luscious green grass and beautiful flowerbeds near the edges and surrounding buildings. There are a few benches and trees for shade. There are interconnecting paths between each building and a fountain at the center.

If you take a left (clockwise) you will find Science & Medicine. It has an abundance of labs and it is where you will find the school nurse, who runs a walk-in clinic with the help of pre-med students. Many professors students conduct research on behalf of the school.

Continuing straight (clockwise) from there you will find Mathematics & Computing, which has state-of-the-art computers and servers that provide free wi-fi to the whole campus.

The Dormitories line the back of the Eukary Quad (see room and board) and at the very back of the campus is the Eukary Fields, where outdoor sports are played. Events, such as carnivals and festivals of all types, are held here as well.

Heading clockwise back toward the Administrative Building you will find the Arts Building. This is where you will find many art studios, dance studios, and dark rooms. There is also a theater that is used for both live performances and for projecting films.

Lastly, continuing clockwise back toward Admin, you will find the Vocational Center. This is where students learn many trades such as carpentry, metal-working, automotive, electrical, plumbing, and printing. It has a small mall run by students (with a restaurant, salon/spa, convenience store, and an auto-shop). The school newspaper is printed here.

Farther into the campus you will find the 24-hour Cafeteria and Recreational Building. It has a cafeteria, indoor track and field, a climbing wall, indoor pool, gymnasium, and several smaller rooms dedicated to events such as bingo night, coffee house/open mic, and clubs. It is a great place to be loud and have fun.

Near the Recreational Building, you will find the Library. It is beautiful, quiet, and known for its excellent variety of both educational and recreational collection. In addition to books, you may borrow comics, manga, graphic novels, audiobooks, CDS, and movies. The building is multiple stories and has multiple computer labs as well as a few rooms for meetings and educational use. There is a small cafe where culinary students and volunteers may work.

All around campus, you will find blue-painted safety/emergency poles. If you press the red button, campus police will be dispatched to the pole's location to assist you. These poles were implemented around the nation to help prevent rape, assault, or devouring and to help students feel safer traveling alone around campus.

Room and Board

Students may choose to purchase room and board along with their education. Those who do have a choice of several different themed dormitory buildings. (Including Male-Only, Female-Only, Herbivore-Only, Athletes, Artists, and Nocturnals.) Alternatively, students may commute from New York or beyond. The Dormitories line the sides and back of the campus, with a road leading up to each dorm for easy move-in. There are few parking spots for movers and visitors (not for students). Key cards are required to get into dormitory buildings, as a safety precaution.

Each Dorm varies, but they typically they have 3 floors with rooms on both side of the hallway and bathrooms and stairwells on each end of the hallway. Bottom floors usually have a common room and a laundry room. Bicycle storage is available in the stairwells. Dorms are usually for 1-4 people, depending on the size of each animal (and their budget).

Meal plans are available for those who would like unlimited access to the 24-hour buffet-style cafeteria. Students access the cafeteria with their key card and have the option to purchase moderately priced meal passes for visitors. Otherwise, there are many nearby restaurants and grocery or convenience stores.

The Black Market

Hidden deep in the city is a small alleyway full of vendors selling meat, blood, pelts, and other illegal animal products. Cops, who are usually predator species, do not patrol the black market so the area can be potentially dangerous and is a center for gang activity.

The Wolf Pack - A night club near the Eukary Campus. Usually where carnivores/predator species hang out.
The Warren - A sports bar near the Eukary Campus. A common destination for herbivore/prey species to hang out.

Animal Terminology

Predator:

Animals that eat or used to eat other animals.

Prey:

Animals that are eaten by other animals.

Carnivore:

Animal who must eat meat to survive, and are not able to or poorly digest other food.

Omnivore:

Animal who requires a varied diet. (Meat, plants, fruit, nuts.)

Herbivore:

Animal who can survive by only eating plants. They may be able eat other types of food, but can survive without.

Lower Lifeforms:

Insects, arachnids, and mollusks are plentiful in nature and are considered non-sapient and safe to eat. Many keep these animals as pets.

Land Animals:

These are the kinds of animals we will see most of. Land animals are usually between 2 ft to 10 ft tall and are anthropomorphic in shape. They usually speak the primary language of english but may communicate with primitive sounds and gestures.

Amphibious Animals:

Amphibious animals (frogs, crabs, walruses, penguins, etc.) are usually anthropomorphic, but sometimes less so than land animals. They may speak aquatic languages, land languages, or both. They often work or serve as diplomats or interpreters.

Aquatic Animals:

Aquatic animals can be anthropomorphic but are unusually less so than land animals. Many aquatic animals can only breathe in water or may only be out of it for a short time. Aquatic species have many different languages and we still have much to learn about them. The intelligence and sapience of non-anthromorphic sea life is hotly debated, so eating fish and other aquatic life is considered taboo.

Farm Animals:

Animals like cows, chickens, and pigs were once enslaved by humans and other apex predators for their milk, eggs, and meat. All types of slaves were freed in the US when this worlds 16th President issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. The battle against slavery didn't stop there, but it certainly began.

Specism and racism is still alive today, affirmative action programs help to combat it. Farm animals and other slave species and races may be eligible for scholarship, grants, and special loans. Employers and educational facilities are offered incentives for taking in slave species.

Milk and eggs are still available and affordable. Meat from sapient animals is illegal and only available on the black market. There are strict laws with heavy fines in place to protect animals that sell body products (such as milk, eggs, feathers, teeth, scales, and fur.)

Domesticated Animals:

Animals such as dogs and house cats came about from their parent species (wolves and wildcats) during the Great War. They were designed to be superior to their parent species as well as being exceptionally obedient to those in command of them. With time, they grew smarter, friendlier, and evolved traits favored by those that created them. Once the Great War was over, these 'domesticated' species were all but forgotten by those who created them and had to adapt into society. Sometimes there is tension between domesticated and ancestral species for this reason. Many animals look down on domesticated species for being "pets", a discriminatory word to describe domesticated animals as lower beings compared to other animals.

Physique: Dolly’s body is not conventionally masculine. Combined with his small stature, he appears slim and dainty.

Appearance:
Dolly, being a mouse, is naturally small. Even by rodent standards, he is rather frail for a young man. He has stark white hair and fur, along with extremely pale skin due to his albinism. He has a fuzz-covered tail that’s almost as tall as he is, and a pair of round ears he never seemed to grow into. His soft features and unassuming appearance make him seem like not much of a threat, and he knows this. Dolly’s hair is very long, kept around his calves (a bit over two feet in length). Sometimes it is tied back with a bow or into a braid. He puts effort into his appearance, staying groomed and well dressed- most of the time. He'll wear makeup and other various feminine things without batting an eye, but has androgynous fashion as well. Most of his clothes are pastel in color and quite conservative when out and about, but his wardrobe becomes much more obnoxious when it comes to his nightlife.

Personality:
Despite his timid looks, Dolly is absolutely frothing with emotion (mostly rage). To the passerby, he is a wannabe big shot with a serious Napoleon complex. This is all very true, but he is more than a short guy with too much attitude. Dolly's aggression is very warranted seeing that the world is cruel, and he is trying to make a point of not being an easy target. Throughout his life, he's learned to always be on guard. It's how he survived. He sees most people as a potential threat, and also gets rather insecure around animals larger than him since they threaten his authority. He likes to belittle and insult others, but only if he believes he can get away with it. Though he has a hard time swallowing his pride, he will do so for survival. Deep down, he feels an obligation to stick up for the "little guy". They remind him of himself. He has an obsession with proving that he is not weak, even if he physically is. He has a very difficult time accepting assistance from other people since he worries that it makes him appear more fragile (at least more than he already is). He also has a difficult time taking the blame when something is his fault, often shouldering it aside. He does not want to come face-to-face with the reality that people can see he isn't as perfect as he looks.

Dolly is very hedonistic. He is very much one to take stupid risks either to be petty or just to have fun. He is outwardly promiscuous because he is tired of being ashamed of himself, and also enjoys the power it gives him. He enjoys the security he feels that comes with having control over things. He knows he's pretty and will use it to his advantage if needed, but thankfully he doesn't try to manipulate people. Still, he has a reputation of being superficial. He is a surprisingly lonely person, only really forging relationships to fool around instead of committing to people. Commitment scares him, but he does yearn for security in both platonic and romantic relationships. He is also rather emotionally immature, so his wants don't align with his needs, and he is constantly struggling against this.

Backstory:
Dolly was born in a backwater town somewhere in Texas. He never really fit in there, being the runt of his family. He was a sickly child, so his mother spent most of her time fretting over him. He’s always been her favorite according to everybody else. Even after regaining most of his health as he grew, she always insisted on babying him. This annoyed the hell out of Dolly since it mostly manifested as her keeping him inside and within her sight whenever she could. He was isolated from his peers and siblings for most of his childhood, though he was somewhat close to August due to being littermates. Though, the two drifted apart because of a lack of shared interests. Dolly was mostly into the arts (because they were considered “safe”), while his brother was more rough-n-tumble.

Dolly spent most of his time doing chores around the house (usually being shepherded by his mother) or at the local church. He and his brother went to school there and were raised rather religiously. He was a good kid, always trying to help out even if he couldn’t do much. This was because he really had nothing better to do with himself, and he wanted some form of validation that wasn’t from his overbearing mother. Though, he began to vehemently reject his religion as an act of rebellion as a teenager. To this day, the thought of going back to church makes him want to gag. He sees the holier-than-thou mindset he once carried as obnoxious and is quite content with being secular.

If it were up to his mother, Dolly would still be at home, pretending to be a surrogate daughter for the little girl she never had. He ran off with his then boyfriend, Buck, to New York at age 17. It was a stupid idea and a stupid way to come out to his family, but Dolly doesn’t regret doing it. He was sure staying in that town would have driven him insane. He spent most of his time making questionable decisions and hanging out with questionable people- this led to a rather tough falling out with Buck about a year ago. Now Dolly is friendless and scrambling to pull his life together- without the help of his parents, as he’s dead scared of speaking to them. The city has been cruel at times, but he's determined to just tough it out.

Occupation: Dolly has been working odd jobs, some less legal than others, while trying to scrape by when he first showed up. He has luckily managed to land himself at a healthier job in a local music shop and occasionally giving lessons. He is hoping to save up money to attend the local university.

He is a typical coat colouring for his species, with a large neck ruff that he keeps trimmed and groomed. He has a nick taken out of his left ear from a fight as a youngster, and a small scar on his cheek from the same time.

BoldPersonality: Silas is loud and brash, dominating the room with his presence and demanding attention wherever he goes; not that it’s in short supply. He’s attractive and everyone knows it. He can have a bit of a cruel streak and is mostly seen as a bully.
He looks down on most, especially domestic animals and half-breeds, which was the main reason he joined the Elite’s cause.

History: Silas grew up in a normal working-class household with his two older brothers. They weren't well off by any means but they got by, especially once Alastair and Jude entered the world of work.
Silas was a troubled youngster, constantly picking fights and arguments for no reason other than sheer boredom. As the only tiger in his school, he established a hierarchy among the other carnivores and his little group was more often than not the subject of many detentions and suspensions. Despite this, he left with high enough grades to attend college, specialising in fine art and fashion design. He graduated with honours, although the connections he'd made were less than favourable. Silas managed to get himself involved in the Black Market, selling pelts and furs on a street corner; a job that paid handsomely enough to rent a studio space and it was here that he made his first collection. He fought tooth and claw to get it shown on a runway; finally some organisers took pity on him and gave him a fifteen minute slot at the end of their winter collection show and his brand exploded from there - soon becoming one of the most well known and influential designers.

Appearance: Taurus is remarkably tall, although his horns don’t add too much to his height due to the forward-set nature of them. He’s muscled, but not overly so; it’s clear he runs frequently but would rather his nose in a book. He keeps his chestnut hair long and usually tied back with a ribbon but will often flop forward over his eyes, as is typical of his species. His hair is slightly lighter than the rest of his fur, but is still a darker shade than what his species is usually. He has round ears set just under his horns, which point forward and slightly lift at the tips. Taurus’ eyes are a deep, coffee brown but are usually partially hidden by a pair of rectangular, wire-rimmed glasses. He has a chunky gold ring through his nose.

Taurus is usually seen dressed in shirts, slacks and waistcoats, only really dressing down when he’s running.

Personality: Taurus is your typical English gentleman. Polite, well-mannered and well-spoken. He is fairly outgoing, although it’s definitely a charade, he’d much rather retire with the company of his books or a piano than socialise. He’s confident, and despite being a typical prey animal, he refuses to be intimidated. He’s charming when he wants to be, and some would say a bit of a flirt. He can be stubborn and slightly bull-headed at times; once he’s made his mind up on something it’s very, very difficult to get him to change it.

History: Taurus grew up in rural England, and moved to New York with his older brother and parents when he was 16. The move took some getting used to but he adapted quickly despite the family’s low earnings.

His father worked several labourer jobs, eventually holding down a well-paying construction role, which was the reason for their move. His mother works as a garden landscaper for the new builds in the city.

Appearance

Long-legged and well-groomed with a maintained physique allows them to pass as considerably classier than the modest flat they live in would suggest. Their snowy complexion and pink eyes hints to albinism, the blonde accents likely being flecks of temporary dyes. Inked-in freckles on the velvet of their face, eyeliner, fake glasses, nail polish accent the studs and bars in their ears and the 'premo' look is complete with devil-bite ring piercings in their lower lip.
Depending on the day, leisurewear may be plaid designer thigh-highs, high-tops, short shorts and a snug tank top under an oversized hoodie. 'Workwear' typically consists of smears and black/gray splotching on what isn't hidden under dark turtlenecks, tight jeans and boots, eschewing the piercings and other bright colors for a more discreet edge. What funds they rake in go to creature comforts and the various collection of 'hats' and disguises they shift between depending on which itch needs scratching.

Personality: The playful smirk, soft voice and feminine wiles are wielded like a tool as he tries to 'fake it til ya make it'. Jasper is loathe to talk about his past and prefers to hear others talk about themselves. What can be pried from him can often be construed as douche-y whimsical prose, snark or flat perspectives on current events and its impacts rather than committing to a stance. 'Un-personlike' behavior with a hollow affect, seemingly holding no value for friendship or acquaintances, though craving comradery and the proximity of others, he comes off as guarded and eerily fake, though not unpleasant or arrogant. Distant, but not fleeting, he seemingly prefers to sink into the background of groups in spite of their flourish and presentation. Hes aware that this mindset is wasting time and letting his life pass by, but after losing so much to the city, hes hesitant to invest himself in establishing new relationships. Short History: Jasper is from far out of state, having moved to New York with his family some ten years ago. The city wasn't what was expected or promised and he was alone, by the end of it. Terrible decisions and desperations dragged together the funds to stay afloat for a while as he figures out what to do with himself.

History

Jasper was born in the suburbia outside Juno to a middle-class family. His father was an upstart entrepeneur, his mother nurtured was a stay-at-home sort to care for him and his brother. In these simple and quiet times, he would garden and help out around the house, honing a skill with poetry which never went anywhere due to a lack of self-esteem and timidness towards the world. The concept of the arcane, however 'fantasy' the concept was in reality, always enraptured his wild creativity. It was something ethereal that gave voice to the shadows in the deep woods, something that made him want...more...from his works. Something he didn't feel could be found in respect or even acknowledgement. The dreams sat with him for the decade after his father had his 'big break' and the whole of their family's life was flown down to the cities with the promises of walls of glass and views out over the clouds.
Jasper's father, though making somewhat more, had caught himself in a loop of successes and falls for the predators of papers and ink; demons who damned with single strokes of black pens. Rooms were smaller, the laughter quieter, and the stars in the sky lost behind a veil of smog and neon. His mother simply disappeared one day, the police always 'doing their best' at every pleading question, though the case was silently closed with about as much grace as the final shrug they offered.
His brother was the one to make it big, landing a position as a chemical engineer and going his own separate way after Jasper fell into drugs...they...don't talk, anymore. Jasper dissolved the assets his father left after the weight of the city finally crushed him, and he moved into a roomy condo with a few others to split the cost. It was here where he gave his heart away to the wrong people. Sure the money was good, and he was fairly skilled at the offered work, but it was hardly what could be called a 'living'.
Dancing at dangerous clubs he likely shouldn't have been welcome in, splitting spliffs on rooftops, its always 'the last time', but resolution never came. He knew he was trapped in the spiral and quickly becoming an uninspiring person. His dreams and storied may have been dying, but they weren't dead...at least not completely. It was just a matter of will and wiring, like his brother. He was going to make his name! He was going to get his own place and make rent Every Week. He was going to climb the glass towers and see the world from atop it all! He was going to make the world remember his name!
Instead the 'swamptown massacre' happened...bad leads to literal dead ends to find his mother, and he very well almost joined her. One name change, later, and 'Jasper' sits on the remnants of the savings paid from a sloppy hit-job he was set up for.
He has his own place, running utilities, quiet neighbors, and the bastards from the club have yet to catch on to where he went or if hes even still alive. He would disagree in calling the empty loft a 'life', but after two years in hiding with the occasional mischievous outings, perhaps 'surviving' is good enough.
