MagiCorp: Wizards Gone Corporate

Several centuries ago, the world was rocked forever by the disappearance of Merlin, the world's greatest wizard. Without him to keep the balance between the light and dark forces in the world, the people began to become jealous and distrustful of the fey races as well as those who possessed magical abilities. War was inevitable and the world was plunged into darkness. After years of fighting, it seemed the human race won out. Flash forward to today, and those ancient wizards have vanished among the people. Where did they go you may ask? They went Corporate!

Created in the 1700s, what started as a secret society dedicated to protecting and preserving the study of magic has grown into a full-fledged business! Here at Magicorp, young witches and wizards are brought onboard to hone their magical abilities, develop technology and tools to drive humanity forward (We invented Facebook you know?), uphold the traditions of magic as set forth by Merlin himself, and... protect the world from the forces of evil.

You see, the humans BARELY won the war in the dark ages. While many humans were able to return to their normal lives and hide among the people, the fey races were... not so lucky. Instead they were forced into hiding in forests, caves, and the underground. These unfortunates existences combined with being branded as monsters and hunted had caused them to resent the race of Man. Now, many of them seek to overthrow Man and the dominant beings on Earth and reclaim the world in their names. Obviously, this would be inconvenient for us at Magicorp as our stock prices would plummet and we'd be incapable of operating in such an environment. As such, it falls to our employees to hunt down various Fey creatures and other monsters before they expose the world of magic to the modern world, upend the balance of light and darkness, and ruin our market value to our shareholders!

Magic: Your Career Path

If your application to Magicorp has been accepted, then congratulations, you managed to beat out every other wizard who wanted to actually use their powers for something productive. Of course, you'll need to know what job to apply for. Mana - the 'life force' of magic - flows differently through all beings (but you knew that already didn't you?). If you didn't then it's a miracle you were hired on, but I'm sure there's a place for you in the custodial department.

In short, your job here at Magicorp is determined by what type of magic you are skilled in. Of course your 'job' is merely a front while your REAL work is hunting monsters, but that's neither here nor there. Here are some 'job openings' you can expect to see in the coming quarter:

-Administration/Middle Management (Pending) -> Job openings in Administration are rare as the wizards who live long enough to be promoted typically know how NOT to die while working at Magicorp. As a result, many of the people in this position are a mixed bag of skills and abilities from throughout Magicorp.

-Research and Development (Evocation/Infusion) -> One of the two 'fronts' for Magicorp, R&D works two jobs as both developing new spells for combat and creating inventions in order to give the impression that we're an actual company providing a public service that doesn't relate to hunting monsters. Slap some magic on an Iphone then send it out! We have a deadline to meet!

=Marketing and Sales (Elemental Magic) -> This job is quite crucial as our Marketing Team deals with giving our services to the people. Typically the best in terms of 'combat magic' those who have mastered the elements really know how to best deliver our product (spoilers it's DEATH) to our clients (The monsters).

-Customer Service (Beast Taming/Enchantment) -> the other 'front' for the company. While dealing with mortals is a constant struggle, our Customer service team keeps them in the dark about what we do. With their skills, they can shackle the fey to their will and force them to do their bidding, or you can simply enchant the mortals and make them look the other way.

-Accounting and Finance (Divination/Illusion) -> Use your knowledge of the future to keep us out of the red! Also, use your illusory skills to make us LOOK like we're not in the red. You guys keep this company afloat. Also, these skills are helpful in battle too.

-Human Resources (Healing/Nature Magic) -> You guys are the reason we keep going out and fighting this battle. Whether it's dealing with mental wounds left by the management or dealing with actual wounds left by angry trolls, this crack team of healers is on the job.
***

And those are just a fraction of some of the opportunities you can expect to grasp when you can join us here at Magicorp! After all, someone has to keep the world safe right? You might as well get paid for doing it. Well with that said, we hope to see your application come through in the next few weeks! We know you'll be a valuble addition to our company! If you're not, we have no problem feeding you to the Balrog we keep in the basement. I'm not joking...
-Katherine 'Karen' Nightstone, Magicorp Hiring Manager

About Magicorp

As stated above, Magicorp was founded in the 1700s as the Order of the Streetwalkers. The Order was made up of wealthy wizards in the U.K. who wished to preserve the free study of magic and educate wizards youths in the ways of the old culture. The name stemmed from wizards walking the streets of London at night to meet at the houses of their colleagues to share notes and their studies.

Unfortunately... another group stole the Streetwalker name so The Order was forced to go nameless for several decades to avoid confusion. Following the American Revolution, the surviving founders of The Order and their descendants saw an opportunity to escape persecution in their homeland and traveled across the ocean to the Americas where they set up shop in New York City (literally). Using the post-revolution society to their advantage, The Order channeled its wealth and influence to insert itself into society as a business firm. Now called Magicorp, the company calls wizards from across the globe to apply and develop their magical abilities, annnnd... sometimes protect the world from monster attacks, but that's nothing you need to worry about at the moment.

So, when you say “Enchant mortals” what does that entail? Are we talking mind control here or…?

@TheNoCoKid
So I'm starting to work on my character sheet. I've refined the idea to him being a golem. Basically there would be a history of mages creating human-like golems, but R&D at Magicorp tried creating one who could use magic, that experiment creating my character.

I'll see if I can't get at least a barebones Customer Service Beast Tamer. I'm thinking a member of a large family with a long line of Beast Tamers. Old money type of guy.

@TheNoCoKid Is this CS style ok?

Thinking it'd be kind of hilarious to have an illusionist who's terrible at lying. Especially if she manages to fool a fae who doesn't understand the concept of outright lies xD

I’m also going customer service. Because I work customer service IRL. 😆

Umm… let me know if this character works in this RP.

Headshot:

Full Name: Kenji Yamamoto

Age: 23

Appearance: Kenji is a six foot tall man of Japanese descent. He has a physically fit dancers body. He keeps his black hair neat and tidy, and the same with his clothes.

Worldview (Personality): Upon first impression, Kenji is a sweet guy. He acts happy go lucky, and always has a smile on his face. He is friendly to everyone in the office, and is willing to strike up a conversation with anyone. He says hi to everyone in the office, and he’s been known to bring baked goods for the other employees to enjoy. Because of his job, people turn to him when they need to someone to vent to and listen to their problems, and he does his best to help them. He gets high ratings for his customer service skills.

This is really just an act. Deep down, he is very irritated with his job, and his life in general. He studied to be an actor, he was going to be a star! Instead, he’s stuck in an office listening to mortals complain about every little problem they have, and then demanding to speak to the manager when they don’t get exactly what they want. At one point, he really did want to help, but being yelled at by people for things he had no control over took a toll on his mental health. Now, Kenji could not care less what happens to people, or their problems. He just puts on the act for the sake of his job.

Position: Customer Service

Magic: Enchantment: He is very characteristic and charming. If you listen to him speak long enough, your bound to believe whatever he says.

Resume (Background): Kenji was born to an average Japanese family living in America. Both his parents were wizards, and they wanted their son to follow in their footsteps. Kenji had no interest in such things. He wanted to be an actor on the broadway stage. Other kids in school bullied him for his interests, and this upset him greatly. He knew that one day, he would be a star! Then he’d show them!

Then things went downhill. He came out to as gay his parents at 18, and told them he was going to study musical theater in college. He figured his parents just wanted him to be happy, and they would support him no matter what. Instead, he was kicked out and disowned from the family. Kenji is no longer on speaking terms with his parents.

Kenji took a bunch of student loans to make it through college. When he graduated, he was severely in debt. That’s when he took a job at Magicorp. To pay off his debts, and actually have a life. At least untill he gets his big break. Then he won’t have to deal with these people anymore. However, he has been working at Magicorp for years, and his big break still hasn’t happened yet. It should be coming any minute though. Right? Right?

Other Junk (Misc.): Can sing, dance, and act. As well as bake.

Goes on auditions regularly with what little free time he has.

@LuckyBlackCat Honestly I’m not sure if the first person was needed, but it definitely made for an entertaining read! Tbh, I had “Karen” talking on the CS sheet as a way of making it more entertaining, but I do find it kinda funny as a job interview.

Also if it’s not clear, Karen kinda hates the fact she’s stuck in middle management.

@TheNoCoKid Yep I gathered that, poor Karen lol. Anyway as much fun as the CS was to write, I can change the first person thing/job interview style, or leave it as is, depending what you'd prefer!

@LuckyBlackCat up to you. I’m totally up for making the ‘job interview’ format the standard for this RP since you’re all essentially starting as new hires.

@Crimson Flame Not sure if Kenji would have been ‘working’ for a few years when the whole rp is everyone applying the join the company. Also, even if the work sucks, the Magicorp as a company is still pretty prestigious.

@LuckyBlackCat She’s accepted, but she’s gonna have to pick up her illusion game if she got hired despite her ‘slacking’ streak.

Kenji was recycled from a different office RPG that didn’t get too far. I had a feeling he might not work, but it was worth a shot.

I think I’m going to try with a different character.

The whole point of his character is that he is a disgruntled customer service employee. If he’s a new employee, he wouldn’t really have any reason to be disgruntled.

He could still be bitter about all the debt he's in, and the fact that he's going to be stuck in a customer service job when he feels he's destined for more.
