I laugh for a while and shake my head, amused by Nic and all of his questions. ”I name some of them, but I have a lot of plants. And they don’t talk per se, but I do get intuitive hits.” Calypso and Max come into the room eventually and look up at Nic or wander around him. I smile, watching my animal friends inspect Nic. ”How’s your dad?”

I grin at her reaction to my questions. “Amazing.” I tell her honestly in reaction to the new knowledge, greeting the other animals as they approach me by crouching.

“He actually went to his shop today. A friend of his is keeping him company.” I tell Cass, looking up at her with a smile. “I need to ask him if he plans on staying with me indefinitely or what our plan is going forward. I don’t think either of us want the other to be alone.”

I watch him play and greet all the cats, glad to see that he not only likes animals but is getting along with them. Max doesn’t linger long before he disappears, but that doesn’t surprise me. Max is my familiar, so he doesn’t linger with other humans long.

”You’re all your dad has left. It would make sense if he would want to keep you close,” I say in understanding.

“Precisely.” I say with a bright smile. I look back at Wayland and give him some chins scratches. “Alright little guy, I’m going to steal your mother for a bit. Keep the others out of trouble, okay?” I get a purr in response, but I have a feeling it was for the chin scratches, not to confirm that he’d keep the place free from trouble.

I laugh. ”Don’t worry, Calypso is more of the instigator. Wayland usually goes along with it though,” I say and scratch the cat’s head before Nic sets him down.

With the cats out of the way, I grab my keys and follow Nic out the door. I lock up behind me before walking down the stairs to the SUV. ”Everything go okay with Avery?”

I nod, making sure to beat her to the car so I could open the door for her. “Yeah, he told me to have fun with you today and then we’re officially starting training tomorrow morning.” I tell Cass, helping her inside before I close the door and jog around to get into the driver’s seat.

“Did you want to join in too?” I ask, even though I’m pretty sure I remember her saying she hates morning.

I give Nic a ‘are you nuts look’ as I get into the vehicle. I wait until he’s back inside before answering. ”One, I like my sleep, and two, I like my life. No way I want to be murdered by Avery’s workouts.”

Don’t get me wrong, hunting required a lot of training and I did work out, but I mostly kept to myself. I preferred to train with my knives than anything else.

I laugh fully at her reaction. “Fair enough. He did warn me that he won’t take it easy on me.” I use the passenger seat as leverage so that I can see as I pull away from Cass’s townhome and towards Cary.

“Is Avery a hugger?” I ask, remembering how I wanted to give him a hug.

I laugh and shake my head, glancing out the window as we leave Chicago. Even just going for a drive is nice. I enjoyed simply being in Nic's presence, far more than I thought I would.

”Because it was silly,” I declared. I reached out and rested my arm on the console next to his, the backs of our fingers brushing against eachother.
