Slaughtering Fiends and obliterating the obstacles to civilization in the wasteland don't require being a dick.

The NCR taking over is a flawed solution, a sort of mixed good-ish ending with some unfortunate consequences. NCR's basically a criticism about elements of the modern U.S. It's got a lot of corruption and government nonsense that slows things down, makes plans to help people or build society less effective or counterproductive, they've got an arrogance and controlling attitude toward the territory it wants to control, etc. I remember at least a couple things going significantly downhill, going the NCR route. It is one of the better options, though. And I think it's flaws actually make it a better ending writing-wise.
Still, the best ending (in terms of consequences) is the Wild Card, if the player's put all the effort in and made all the right choices.

I kill everything organic I see except those deemed worthy to live in my new regime.

Something I wanted to test but never did the extra playthrough to do, was having a character that goes on murder sprees when one particular song plays. :D
The challenge being that the radio for it has to be on at all possible times. It would hilariously fuck up just about every alliance/positive progress a player could manage.

What you do in the Wasteland can help solve the NCR's problems back home, on top of the NCR serving to defend and develop the Wasteland. Persecuting the Crimson Caravan Company, for instance, via Cas' quest-line.
