The rock as in the team leader? I'm sort of intending that job for my character Lauren/Sass. That way I've got a character that I can use to nicely direct the course of the story to a degree.

You're more than welcome to try the character concept, though. :)

No, team leader isn't what I was thinking of. More like, someone who's been around for a long time, and is more of a conscious/guide rather than a leader.

The "older/wiser" Sprayer is what Will was originally going to be, but I toned his age back and changed him up a bit when me and Mach came up with a shared backstory.

I'm getting started on a second character soon. Reckoned we needed another on the other side.

Edited the OOC. Added transportation, city appearance, and rules. It's now complete, but always subject to change as our storyline develops.

And the IC should be up within a few hours! :D

And we have lift off! Post is a teensy bit short, I wasn't watching the time and I had to rush a little.

Everyone with a Sprayer character can have them gather in the lobby of the abandoned apartment. :D

I have this horrible habit of not saving my post. And then I somehow manage to delete it. And then I need to rewrite it.

At least it give me time to think out my character.

Still, I'm very bitter about the fact that I can't preview the post.

Ack. I've definitely done that before. Or had my browser crash midway through typing. It sucks. A lot. >.<

Gisk, 100% okay. Thank you for that, actually. I was having so many brain farts trying to come up with a code. You summed up exactly what I was thinking.

I was aiming for something that would be nonsensical to a layperson, but that had a kind of logic to it that would help the initiated remember.

The codeword for "left" would be "sea", by the way. I derived left and right from "Port" and "starboard." If you see what I mean. It's logical, but not obvious.

I hope it's alright. I had to type and re-type it like 6 times because i kept accidentally deleting it. I'm hoping to edit this as we go along because I want her to be a more dynamic character.

Name: Amelia-Page Waters - Paige for short.

Age: 18

Occupation: Recent transfer to the surveillance team

Appearance:

Paige is blessed with an uncanny and ghastly beauty. Her skin is a fair ivory, and is quite unblemished. What few she does have are covered scarcely with makeup. There's almost no tint to her face, except for a subtle coloring of rose on her cheeks. Sharp cheekbones cut across her face, and her jaw is chiseled. Her full lips are usually pursed in a bored expression -- if not that, a demure, but still hostile, smirk. Her pretty hazel eyes are framed by dark lashes and angled brows, set in an ever-endearing expression.

An intimidating person, Paige hardly makes up for her huge ego in her size. She stands at a whopping 5'3", with a petite and trim figure from athletic conditioning to keep her in peak performance.

Paige dresses almost as clean and pressed as Mallory does, except for the t-shirt, which has been replaced by simple, bold-colored blouses or button-ups. A friendship bracelet with wood beads and colored glass hangs loosely from her wrists.

Gear:
[01] - 9mm pistol, tucked away somewhere on her person. Usually at the hip, in a holster, but maybe tucked into the back waistband of her jeans.
[01] - Earpiece, similar to Mallory's.
[01] - Pack of gum, in a variety of flavors. Paige has a horrible habit of chewing gum, especially when she gets nervous.

Personality:

BITTER & CYNICAL: "Go away and leave me to my own devices."
Paige has grown fairly bitter since her childhood. Sarcasm flows easily off of her tongue, and she tends to have a negative outlook on things. While some people mistake her overall bad attitude as a sort of dry humor, it is, in all honesty, the truth. She often projects herself as hateful and pessimistic, and so long as she keeps convincing herself that that's who she is, it will continue to be so.

ARROGANT, VAIN, & BOASTFUL: "I don't need a mirror to tell me that I'm better than you on an exponential scale."
Growing up, as Paige realized that her superior intellect made her better than the children in her classes. Instead of being modest, she grew an ego the size of Jupiter; boasting and bragging. The "confidence boost" turned others away from her.

INDEPENDENT: "I can do it by my fucking self."
Paige figures that since no one wanted to talk to her because of her huge ego, she might as well push them farther away. Because of her "lone wolf factor", she has a tendency to go AWOL and do her own thing. Even if she does happen to keep herself in check, Paige prefers her own company over that of others. While she may be vain, she detests attention. She likes doing her own thing.

HONEST, TO A FAULT: "I make myself sick to my stomach. But it makes me feel better to know that I can admit it."
Paige is not one to be in denial. Her telling a lie is an uncommon thing. If she doesn't want to tell the truth, she'll avoid the question altogether instead of murdering her morals.

QUESTIONING/UNSURE: "Oh, fuck... I don't think I can do this. You can't just ask me to shoot someone!"
In reality, Paige's private training did cover this. It covered interrogating someone, pursuit - but when it came down to shooting someone, even a dummy, Paige couldn't bring herself to pull the trigger. It was one thing, shooting at a target on paper, but shooting at something with the semblance of a person... well, Paige broke down before she took the kill shot. As she's spent more time in Northgate, she knows the clock is ticking before she will be forced to take a shot. It hurts her dignity, but she's still going to try her best to fulfill Mallory's high standards.

CARING: "Look. Hold out your arm so I can put a bandage on you, motherfucker."
While Paige presents herself to be a person-hating, spiteful, and egotistical lady, she still harbors some value for life. She cares for each and every one of her teammates, no matter how much she says she hates them. Her tough exterior is a protective layer over her soft, squishy feelings.

Background:
Paige, an only child to an engineer and a florist, grew up in the lowest parts of Los Angeles, California. Her home, a comfortable flat in a complex in one of the more urban sides of the county, Paige was no stranger to the vandalism in the city. It fascinated her, actually. She spent her childhood days running in the meadows by her house, collecting daisies and wildflowers, weaving them into crowns. Paige used coloring books and scribbled outside the lines in rainbow hues.

When she was about 12, the world around her began to change. The meadows behind her house were dozed, and construction began on an office building. Paige's coloring books were taken away and replaced with textbooks and bubble-tests; crayons became pens and pencils. Paige, unable to keep up with the news due to her short attention span, knew nothing of the revolutionary change that Northgate had set. All she could be aware of was that her life was changing all too quickly. The anti-media fever had spread to her city and caught ahold of it. The people, so colorful, and been forced into conformity. The art-spattered walls were painted over in the same shade of gray. Even in Los Angeles, teams of Sprayers began to pop up, although they hadn't adopted the slur as a job title. Paige grew to hate them, not because she didn't appreciate their art, but because they broke the laws that she was being forced to follow. Why should they be allowed to get away with painting on a public building, while she was getting her watercolors confiscated by her parents.

Both of her parents were strongly opinionated, and pushed her in school. They fed her their own take on the world. You could say that her passion against the Sprayers was fueled by them. Paige, used to coloring outside of the lines, started to conform to their demands, becoming a cookie-cutter daughter. Except for periodically stepping her toe out of line, Paige was obedient. She got the highest marks in class, got the first place medals in sports, and got a relationship to die for. But the sweet girl from just a few years ago evolved to her changing world. Bitterness seeped into her, and her perspective changed.

Graduating at the top of her class in the academy, Paige made sure to leave all of her classmates in the dust. She had already applied to intern a desk job in San Francisco. Packing her bags and boarding a plane, she expected to get off and begin filing paperwork. Instead, Paige was greeted by a stone-faced 19-year-old in an ash-colored city.

Apparently, her services were needed elsewhere.

Nevertheless, she's willing to prove that she's a worthy asset to have around; after all, hunting down Sprayers in Northgate beats sitting around in a boring office cubicle, sifting through old files. With a sense of justice, Paige agreed to "intern" for the Surveillance team instead of her desk job in SF. While in Northgate, she hopes to put an end to the delinquency in the streets. In her eyes, it's unfair that the Sprayers get to get away with breaking the law she works hard to uphold.

Extra:
-likes tea, but prefers fruit juice
-vegetarian
-gum chewer; for her, it's like an addiction that tends to get on her superior's nerves
-photographic memory
-former student of Nate Matheson. She didn't really take to his classes, but she still got out with an A. She was often caught doodling on her notes and assignments. She hardly remembers the old man, but would recognize his face, should they ever meet again.

Name
Nathan (Nate) Matheson
Alias: Relic or The Architect

Age
46

Occupation
Sprayer by night, Engineer-Inventor by day. Was a city planner before, and a high school Advanced-Level physics teacher before then.

Appearance

Nate is a taller man, standing around six feet tall. He is powerful, and has a powerful bearing, but his weight is well under control. Muscled and fit, without being excessive. His clothes tend to be calmer colors, with no insignias or symbols. Suits are also nice.

Gear
Nate carries around, at all times, a burner cell phone, a wallet with some cash and a few licenses or keycards, and a Swiss army knife, along with a set of lockpicks. During his time assisting in the construction of Northgate, he was given a small microchip in his brain, a chip which allows him to record massive amounts of information and recall it at will. The chip functions as a perfect memory locker for sensory input or thoughts he has.

Aside from that, Nate has several cans of paint, both spray and traditional, hidden in various places around the city. He tends to travel light, not carrying around anything that can't fit in his pockets.

Personality
Nate was, at one point, an excited man, with a clever sense of humor and plenty of energy. His vitality made his classes fun for his students, and his competence and intelligence made him engaging and interesting to speak with. His eyes always flashed with happiness whenever his students asked him a challenging question. Since then, he's mellowed out dramatically, with age, hindsight, and perspective.

He serves as a rock, providing calm thoughts and clever solutions. He can be incredibly manipulative when people he care about are in danger, but he is mainly a straight talker with a brilliant mind. His experience in Qi Gong and T'ai Chi help him remain cool and focused, but not detached.

He is soft-spoken now, but his voice cuts through a room like a knife, and deep, deep beneath all his collected cover, a long buried flame of rage is ever-present.

Misc Info/Extra
-During his frenzied life, the two things which kept him sane were his wife and his inner peace. He is a skilled practitioner of Qi Gong and T'ai Chi Chuan. This inner peace and calm has helped him cope with life, and help others recover in the same way. The hard aspects of the martial arts have kept him in shape, as well.
-Having Northgate based on his ideas has helped Nathan assist in Sprayer ops. He knows where the shortcuts are, where the secret rooms and the passages. He knows how to bring everyone home.
-Despite his age and knowledge, he is not the leader. He is a navigator, leaving the decision making and the leading to someone with more passion. He dispenses advice, and keeps the younger members from going too crazy.
-At one point in his teaching career, he instructed Paige Waters. He was disappointed with how the fire in her had died out, something he could see quite easily, and wishes he had been able to be more than just another teacher for her.
-His inventions and gadgets are useful to the team, especially when he has time to work on them.

Background
Nate was born in a small city in the Northwest, an open and free place, before the Northgate movement swept the nation. He grew up unfettered by the laws currently in place, playing in nature without a care in the world. His father wasn't around too much, working a stressful, high-level management job at a law firm and lobbying group (ironically, the one which eventually proposed the Northgate concept). The father wasn't around too much, so it was his mother, his brother, and his cat in the house, most of the time.

In school, Nate's careful and sturdy upbringing revealed a bright curiosity in science and progress. He wasn't a genius by birth, but over the course of his years in school his constant studying, learning, and preparing slowly crept him up the class rank. He didn't graduate valedictorian, but he was in the top fifteen. His college experience was much the same, filled with long chats with other intellectuals about the brightness of the future. The days were filled with stress, but almost carefree. He graduated summa cum laude from school, then went back for a masters, and a Physical Doctorate. Both fell with ease beneath his voraciousness for knowledge.

During his time in graduate school, he volunteered at a high school, first to give a lecture on the properties of thermodynamics as practice for presenting findings later in life, and then, when he was received outstandingly well, he had a thought: the students who applauded him so heartily were the same students who would make the future great. He decided to become a teacher, hoping to guide these children on the right path.

For years, he taught thus, rapidly becoming one of the school's most valued employees. In his spare time, he traveled, giving lectures of idealism and excitement about the possibilities for the future, slowly building a name for himself in the scientific community. During his time teaching and traveling, he met a brilliant woman, Mara, who he fell in love with. After plenty of beating around the bush, he finally won her heart, and the two of them were wed, to his delight.

Only a few years passed before everything changed. One night, while he sat, tapping away at his computer, a strange number popped up on his phone. The caller had a proposition for him: would he like to help plan the world's safest city? His mind kicked into overdrive, bringing images of color, happiness, and smiles. Of course, he accepted graciously.

The work began soon enough: he and a group of other scientific powerhouses collaborated online, hemming and hawing over every tiny detail of the place. It was all theoretical, of course: the safety measures were incredibly expensive, or so he was told, but the idea of a perfect city would inspire change. He, Mara, and the rest of the group spent months upon months building the place in simulations and models.

And then Nathan saw one morning on the news, Northgate. Implementing all of the safety measures he had helped to plan, but without the interesting, fun, or inspiring features he had thrown in. In essence, a police state. He tried to call in a complaint, but some time ago, Northgate officials had approached the group about buying their ideas, as efficient and clear as possible. Mara and Nate were outnumbered by the other developers, almost all of whom had agreed to the situation. The city itself was being remodeled according to the faux map of Nate's creation.

Angry and betrayed, the couple took to the internet, looking to find some way they could undo the damage they had caused. They found the answer in the Sprayers. The pair of them quietly moved to Northgate, and, after days of looking, found their way into one of the groups.

It didn't last long. Mara was taken only a few nights into the operations, whisked away from Nate before he could even do a thing to help her. He didn't see her again for weeks. She was entirely different. Demure, sheeplike. None of the inner fire or intelligence he had come to rely upon was there. She left him too, claiming her calling for justice prevented her from loving him anymore. Their history protected him from revelation, as she was leaving the area, perhaps permanently.

But the change struck him dearly. He retreated from the Sprayer group, without any warning. Without his knowledge of the area., the rest of the team was captured as well, further cementing his loss and pain.

When he heard that a new group of Sprayers were trying to set up shop, he knew right then that he couldn't make the same mistake. He sought them out. He joined them, providing his knowledge, expertise, and level head. He'd be damned if he'd let anyone care about be captured again. And if the chance came to shut down the horror he had helped create, then he'd be damned if anyone would stop him.
