I don't see the point of a blacklist, but a whitelist (predetermining who is allowed to post) is what the participants system is, currently only enabled for Convos.

I would LOVE something like this, for those rare occasions when an unwelcome party decides to be a brat. I think this is mostly handled by mods of course, BUT it could be useful if implemented, and free up the mods (or future mods if you implement them) to focus on more important things

A whitelist plus giving the thread creator the power to remove people from said whitelist if desired would be a happy medium between the two. I don't know how common such things are, but if someone were to be whitelisted into an RP and then get pissy and start spamming/trolling, it'd be nice for the GM to be able to boot 'em.

Whitelist with GM add/remove rights would make most sense. It could, when fully developed, also have multiple levels, say co-GMs and such.

If there had to be a choice, I'd choose a blacklist-only system over a whitelist-only system, if a blacklist and/or whitelist were implemented.

I would rather see a blocklist than greenlist. Person is being obnoxious -> person loses ability to post. It doesn't actually happen all that often that someone decides to be a jerk, and as such it is much easier for the GM(s) to deal with jerks than everyone who wishes to apply.

As opposed to greenlisting...? How is a person supposed to express interest? PMing set as a part of approving process can and will turn people away. What if I want people to directly engage in IC (IC introductions)? As few steps to let people start interacting should always be preferred over a more complex process, for the sake of the site's health. I am a member to several sites with similar approval systems, and it is nothing but pointlessly annoying. Barely anyone likes it.

In other words: please don't to greenlist-style approvals for anything besides PMs.

I'm uneasy about a blacklist, especially forum-wide. A PM is private, it's meant to be exclusive just to get something done or goof off with the specific people involved. It's minimal. Forums are supposed to be public discourse where people can participate so long as they follow basic rules.

**There's douchebags that can hurt or ruin a thread. But there's also OP'ers (and GMs) that are douchebags that can hurt or ruin a thread. Giving someone the ability to ban anyone on their own whims is a bad idea. Even those well-intentioned will arguably screw up on that end, where they ban the slightest conflict, or ban something in favor of their own opinions (e.g. someone on one side of the argument between people that were upset about/complained/criticized RPG's long downtime and wipe and people who didn't like the former group's actions).

It's an issue of censorship and elitism (almost a trigger word with the donations talk, but it fits). Members could completely block out others just because they rub them the wrong way, or because those people don't agree with them. It could establish more official cliques than just the same people tending to hang in the same circles around the forum, which leads to some superiority complexes and categorization.

Why the report button works, under a good staff, is that it spots someone maybe breaking the basic rules of conduct, and goes through a filter of someone who is less biased, knows the rules better, and whose goal it is to keep those rules in check enough to make things fair and civil.

***Just get the report button back. RPG is a good place. The staff is solid, they don't screw people over because of favorites or pettiness, and most of the members here are decent and not that bad. Even the douchebags are usually mild douchebags. Very few hang around (a) thread(s) just to personally attack and harass other people.

@Tick: People are speaking about blocklists for specific threads only - you can only keep people posting in a thread you started, they will still be ale to post everywhere else -, not forumwide bans.

It's only for specific threads, but any OP'er in any thread throughout the entire forum can do it. Which is what I refer to when I say "forum-wide."
Apologies if that's off.

Still, it might be important to have the idea considered for what mods can do about people that misuse this system, whether it is a white or a black list.

It also needs to be limited to RP sections.

Simplest way of implementing it in RP threads would have be to to have it active by default on IC threads and any tabs like CS (when that gets added), But not to OoC tabs. If someone breaks with what is fair and reasonable in an OoC thread tab, involve the mods.

It is still better to let people have a chance to post immediately. Also, not all roleplays follow the OoC/IC/CSs standard. Just please, no to whitelists. No. If there is a CS tab, then I want people to post their sheets straight there, and not in the OoC. And what if I want to make IC-submission RP?

how about a system where while it is enabled by default, the GM can disable it. Such would fit naturally into a system where the GM creates tabs and sets restrictions on them. (having the choice "none")

I would rather it were disabled by default, if it does get enforced... In any case it would require the option to go back and alter the settings (we can't even alter thread titles right now), since I know at least I tend to miss unticking all kinds of boxes. People usually do. They also forget to press "confirm" after altering something.

(Honestly, I wouldn't be so against it if I hadn't seen this kind of system's effects in actuality. Basically, people are constantly reminding the OPs to add them rights. And then discovering they still don't have the rights when they log back on tomorrow, although the OP is certain the rights were added... With people who visit somewhat irregularly or are in different timezones it can especially be a problem.)

If someone were to spam and try to ruin the thread a modifier would step in and warn him to stop/ delete old messages. If it continues they are liable for a ban. So problem solved, report button win!

Edit: that awkward moment you see this thread stopped three days ago....
