Mei wasn't quite sure what to say, from the rude response to the...odd one....going on like she was Batman. Instead of responding to any of them, she simply lowered her arm, and let herself ask the question that was on her mind. "How...how were you flying? With those ice discs. You're students at the Academy, I'm sure of it. They've never taught us that."

Ivy, staring Mei down, was attempting to conceal her visible distraction. Mei's voice was completely different to the scathing hiss she had heard before, which meant that they were still in dangerous company. Before she could turn around to resume her search, two massive walls of ice suddenly rose up from the ground at each end of the alleyway, blocking them in. The ice turned at a sharp angle and connected in the middle, high above them. What had formerly been an alleyway now a gigantic, icy cavern.
"Hunting humans, are we?" said the mysterious voice once again with the same characteristic hiss.
"We don't discriminate." shot back Ivy, turning around swiftly in case of a surprise attack.
"In front of you." said the sibilant voice, much clearer this time.
Ivy whirled around once more and staggered backwards, shocked at the sudden appearance of a tall, feline-like woman. Her skin, ghostly pale, was set in contrast to her bright red lips. Her eyes, with slits for pupils, contracted in delight at the sight of Ivy and those scarlet lips parted, revealing sharp fangs for teeth.
"Who are you?" demanded Ivy, straightening up and staring the woman in the eyes to show her that she was not afraid.
"They call me Bastet," she purred. "And I come with a challenge. I want to face the best that you four have to offer. Pick one fighter. If you win, we will let you live."
"We?" repeated Ivy, glaring at the solitary figure.
"Oh yes." she replied darkly. "And unless you'd like to meet the rest, I suggest you pick someone soon."

Carolyn grasped the bracelet that Cancer gave it and held it up at eye level, scrutinising it. She had planned on delving into his mind without his permission, so receiving it just made things easier. However, there was a more pressing matter on her mind.
"Where did this come from?" she inquired. "This looks like some kind of... patient wristband, the kind you'd get at a human hospital."

Cancer shrugged. "I 'unno. The oldest memory I have is waking up in a dark alley with that thing on me."

There was a moment of silence as the words "human hospital" were processed through his brain. "Oh my God. Don't tell me I have CANCER! Fuck!", he said, quickly being shushed and looked at by fellow students in the library.

16.

Jade held back a small laugh when Aphrodite poked her and kept a straight face, until she made her comment. She smiled a bit before turning serious again when she heard the voice again. She winced slightly when the ice rose up, her eyes widening. "Fuck.." She turned to look at the female in front of Ivy and gasped quietly hearing her name, a flashback of what happened at the warehouse. Her heart began to pound faster at the sound of someone having to fight her. "No, no, no." Jade muttered under her breath as she took another step back.

Aphrodite's usual playful expression changes with fury as the name of who was involved with the attack on Jade, Dark and the others previously. She glares at Bastet while she creates a telepathic link with the 3 other girls, blocking out any intruders.

"Guys this is one of the people that nearly killed Jade and the others a month ago. Be careful, Dark told me they travel in a pack, even if we do try to fight her there is no guarantee that the others will jump in.

"Before we choose, may we request a stipulation for this fight?"

Jade? Which one was that? And who was the catlike woman? And those others? This...was a bad alley to wander down. Mei took a few steps, placing her back to the ice wall that blocked her entry point. She tried to think audibly back to the others. Hey...I'll find us a way to slip out, kay? With that, she placed both of her palms against the smooth ice, her hands beginning to heat like the coils of a stove, not wanting to produce flame, to avoid suspicion at first. The other girls seemed to be keeping the woman's attention on them, and Mei wanted to keep it that way. The incredibly quiet, audible hiss of the ice steaming away was the only comfort she had in this otherwise uncomfortable situation.

Bastet threw her head back and laughed loudly. The horribly shrill and gloating nature of her cackle reverberated around the walls of ice.
"You're not in a position to be requesting anything." she said to Aphrodite, wagging her finger as if she was reprimanding a disobedient child. "But go on, I'll humour you."
"Behind you, Bastet. One of them is trying to escape." growled a voice in Bastet's head.
"Before I do that, however, I'd advise you to stop your friend. If she manages to get through that wall, what's waiting on the other side will not be pretty." she warned, eyes still on the trio before her.

"I wish you did." thought Carolyn sourly.
"Have you never wondered about who you are, or where you came from?" demanded Carolyn, pocketing the bracelet for examination at a later date. "Well, stay still."
Carolyn put her fingertips on Cancer's helmet, closing her eyes and feeling her essence suffusing with Cancer's. She now had full access to his mind, but it was all for nothing. Instead of seeing flashes of memories, she only saw distorted squares of black and white, oscillating and swelling but never receding. A strange, crackle-like sound was all she heard and it was hard not to compare Cancer's mind with static from a television set.
"Someone's tampered with your mind." she finally said breathlessly, now fully out of Cancer's mind. "I've never seen anything like this. You've had your memories wiped, not repressed."

"New girl, stop! I wasn't kidding about them traveling in a pack."

"I want to know what exactly is your group's intention and why do you guys prey on girls all the time. Seems like an objective a common thug would do, like this man beside us. Plus by your actions as of now, you seem wiser than that. Agree to the terms and I'll fight you. I would be foolish to ask for your word that these four will not be harm during our bout."

"Ivy, don't disagree with me on this. Your dark magic and an ice user but this could very well be a stalemate. You're our best chance of getting them out of here, cooperate with the new girl and see if you two can slip out. Leave Bastet to me."

Immediately, Mei let her hands cool, her stomach knotting up. Worst alley to go down. Ever. She crept slowly up to the rest of the girls, hand open at her sides, ready to strike. She assumed the others had been in a situation like this before
That, or they just had awful luck with women that looked like animals.

"I did once", said Cancer, reminiscing on years past. "I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, and then I realized all I was doing was wasting time."

"..IT'S LIKE I'M LIVING IN A COMIC BOOK!", he said excitedly. There was a pause as he thought to himself for a moment. "So what now?"

This time, Bastet screamed with mirth, doubling over and clutching her sides.
"Oh my, that's good." she said, straightening up with a gleeful smile that contorted her entire face. "What kind of world do you think you live in? The one in which the supposed villains divulge every little detail of their grand scheme? Give me a break. You," she pointed at Ivy. "What's the matter? You were so content with taking that harmless little human down. Afraid of challenging someone who can fight back?"
"I'm not scared of you!" spat Ivy, stepping forward.
"Then quit hiding behind her." she taunted, jerking her head towards Aphrodite.
"We can't 'slip out', we're surrounded. If we end up having to escape, we need someone to create an illusion. That someone has to be you. Look, don't worry..."
"I've got this." she said out loud, disengaging herself from between Aphrodite and Jade and stepping forward.

"Hmmmm... maybe..." she pondered, more to herself than Cancer. "Maybe your obnoxious, grating personality is a result of brain damage from the wipe..."

"Damn it Ivy this isn't up for debate, she's just toying with you. Don't let your pride blind you on this one!"

Aphrodite takes a step forward and looking up at Bastet.

"No, I'm taking this fight."

Mei watched carefully. She had no idea of the skill of any of these girls, nor the cat lady. She stood beside them now, watching the one she knew was Aphrodite step forward. She looked to the other girls, wondering if they knew how to react to this illusion plan. She kept her hands ready to fight, however, if things got ugly.

"I said I've got this!" exclaimed Ivy harshly, turning her head towards Aphrodite and glaring at her. "I'm-"

"Too late." interjected Bastet maliciously.

She bent her knees and immediately jumped into the air, twisting gracefully and planting her foot straight into Aphrodite's nose with such force that the blow lifted her off her feet and sent her crashing into the wall opposite. Upon landing, Bastet lazily flicked her hand and created a massive telekinetic wave that flung the other girls together, causing them to collide and crumple to the floor. Another lazy flick of her hand entrapped the trio in an orb and shot them high up into the air where they orbited around the centre of the battleground like some odd planet revolving around a star.

"Get up." she commanded to Aphrodite, who was now stirring on the floor.

Ivy cursed fluently and pounded her palms against the telekinetic orb, looking down at the fight with gritted teeth. There was no way Aphrodite would survive.

Aphrodite shocked at the surprise attack, and that her telekinetic barrier she set up during their argument was shattered as she's sent flying from Bastet's vicious attack. She quickly rises to her feet, with a demonic grin on her face. In an instant she darts towards Bastet and delivers a blow to her abdominal region with her knee, then uses her telekinesis to direct her in position of the orb.

Bastet landed gently on the orb, quickly crawling atop it and gazing down at Aphrodite from a cross-legged position. In the blink of an eye, Aphrodite's lower body was encased in a thick block of ice. Bastet launched herself off the orb with her toes outstretched; her body shot rapidly towards Aphrodite, the speed of her motion whipping her hair around wildly as her foot made made a vicious and brutal contact with Aphrodite's forehead.
"Something similar to static." she muttered, folding her arms grumpily as she stared into Cancer's vizor. "I'm taking the bracelet with me, by the way. Might help me figure out where the hell you came from. I've got one last question for you: do you know a girl named Ashlynn? Rides a motorbike and wears a goofy helmet like you do."

"Just bring it back, okay? I'm a bit sentimental."

Cancer scratched his helmet. "I.. might? We had detention together once. Other than that I don't really 'know her' know her. I imagine she'll be hard to miss though. Why?"

The area around Aphrodite stays still as Bastet's attack connects, unfortunately the result was not what she was expecting as Aphrodite swings her around, slamming her into the building walls. With everything she can muster she shatters the ice and uses the falling shards as weapons and hurtles them towards Bastet's body. Aphrodite panting, she looks up towards the revolving orb and makes a break for it, trying to free her friends from their prison.

Bastet ducked under the shard and staggered forwards, snarling at Aphrodite as she flew through the air and towards the orb.
"GET HER!" she screamed, raising her right hand up.
The ground directly beneath the orb tore open to reveal a swirling, black void that seemed fathomless. A gigantic, scaly tentacle shot out from the hole and twisted upwards, wrapping itself around Aphrodite's ankle. It was not long before it was joined by multiple other tentacles that snaked through the air and wrapped themselves around Aphrodite's entire body, holding her up like an otherworldly cocoon.
With one downwards swoop of her hand, the entire cocoon came hurtling towards the ground. The tentacles slammed her to the cobbled stones with such force that they were left as broken as Aphrodite's body. With the damage dealt, the tentacles receded back into the void they came from and the ground instantly came back together.
Ivy, watching in horror, gasped as the telekinetic orb gave way and the trio fell towards the earth. Before the moment of impact, Ivy formed a platform of ice underneath their feet and maneuvered it skilfully over towards Aphrodite's body, dropping down to check on her pulse.
"Well, I'm disappointed." said Bastet with a mocking pout on her face. "So fragile. Aren't you going to defend your friend's honour?"
"You're dead." threatened Ivy coldly, leaving Jade and Mei with Aphrodite, an ominous look in her eyes as she walked towards Bastet.

"You don't know her?" Carolyn asked, completely crestfallen. The only other student who had such an ambiguous history was Ashlynn and, given the similarity of their attire, it was simply too big of a coincidence to ignore. "You're practically twins."
