[Incoming call: Operative code name "Rho (ρ)"]
"Agent?"
"Yes, it's me. The line is secure as well."
"Excellent. And?"
"It seems your data was correct. The area is emitting very weak traces of a shift. Someone from the future likely sent something to our time"
"That must be it. Scout the area and find the source. Do whatever it takes to secure it."
"Whatever it takes?"
"I don't repeat myself to someone of your rank. Get to it, I expect results. Or is the task more suited to one of the upper letters?"
"Of course not, sir. Rest assured, I will find it."
[End of call]

The period bell had just rung, and in a matter of seconds the hallways of Wilson High were flooded with students scrambling to find their lockers and make it to their next class. Wilson High is a rather small school, consisting of two floors of classrooms arranged in a rectangle stacked on top of each other. On the first floor, the southern most hallway running east to west extends in either direction. To the west is a large gymnasium, where students attend PE class and have access to outdoor exercise stations next to the running track. To the east is a corridor that turns further south and gives way to a large lobby. The lobby is lined with multiple doors leading to the school auditorium. There is a set of hallways that surround the auditorium as well, and these lead to the music and art classrooms as well as backstage. The northern most hallway on the first floor leads east toward the cafeteria, which is connected to an outdoor courtyard containing several picnic tables and a small pond shaded by an equally quaint tree.

A rather average looking man stepped outside of a classroom near the cafeteria, scanning the hallway for someone or something. Finally he found it: Kirin Lahnt, a senior student who was well known among the faculty as "the uninspired genius" due to a habit of acing tests without doing homework, usually resulting in a barely passing grade for their classes.

"Kirin! Come over here, I'd like to speak to you for a moment!" the man called out, hoping to gain the young man's attention over the noise and bantering of confused high school students.

Kirin continued to walk by as he approached his locker, completely oblivious to Mr. Clarkson's attempts to gain his attention. He was lost in his own thoughts, as he commonly was. He made a drawn out exchange of books and folders between his bag and his locker, and then casually closed and spun the lock. With a yawn, he turned back to head towards his class, and he saw the teacher standing behind him, arms crossed.

"What do you need Mr. Clarkson?" he asked with a neutral tone.

With a sigh Mr. Clarkson replied, "Kirin, I was calling your name repeatedly, how did you not hear me?" Half expecting no answer to that question, he moved on after a brief pause. "I saw you on my attendance list for today, but you weren't in class. It's only the first day of school and you're going to start up with your antics again?"

Alex was standing on the football field with his camera watching the drill team. He was assigned to snap some pictures for the school paper and was able to get some good candid shots that no one else on the school journalism staff could get. Alex had a good relationship with the band director Mr. Renfro because Alex's sister Katherine who graduated two years ago was his prized singing pupil. Not to mention that Alex was head over heels for the drum major Angela Marcotti so he was enjoying this assignment a lot.

Once he had several pictures he snapped a couple of Mr. Renfro and approached him. Mr. Renfro said, "Hey Alex nice to see you once again."

Alex replied while taking a couple more, "Great to be here. Kinda sad that this is gonna be my last time doing this."

Renfro nodded and said, "Well time marches on. I wish the trombone section marched as well. We got a game coming up Friday night and we aren't even close to ready."

Alex replied, "You'll think of something you always do."

Renfro looked over and smiled. He said, "Thanks Alex. You better get those pictures to Mrs. Becker, and tell your sister I said hi."

Alex nodded and said, "You got it." With that Alex left the field and as he walked away he transferred one picture of Angela to his cell phone. He smiled as he entered the school.

Kirin shrugged, skipping straight to his teacher's second question. "This is my last year here, my 'antics' will probably be worse than before, why?"

Alex made his way to the journalism room where Mrs. Celia Becker was sipping on a Chai Latte looking over some layouts for the yearbook.

He said, "As promised pictures ready for you to process for the yearbook and first edition of the school paper."

She held out her hand and Alex dropped a memory card into it. Becker stuck the card into a drive and looked over the pictures. He said sitting behind her desk, "No need for applause Alexander the Great comes through."

Without looking at him Becker replied, "Yes and also manages to get a high number of shots involving Angela Marcotti." She looked at Alex and asked with a sly grin, "You wouldn't have certain feelings towards her would you Alex?"

Alex shook his head and said, "Oh no. I mean she barely knows I exist. Besides she is dating Mike Hopkins a guy who's family is really close with ours, he's also the size of The Hulk, and could rip my head off with one hand. Other than that I could see a relationship with her." Alex took a deep breath and asked, "How long have you known?"

Becker shook her head and said, "For someone who wants to be a photojournalist you really need to learn how to see the big picture. I've known since your freshman year when you were taking pictures of the band. Then you kept volunteering for it year after year. No one volunteers for that assignment Alex."

Alex shrugged his shoulders and said, "Okay I'm busted. I just..." He shook his head and said, "Mike takes her for granted and I just wish she could see that there were better options. Even if it's not me just someone who will treat her like the gift she is."

Becker replied, "How can she know if no one will tell her Alex? This is one is all on you."
