... I try other forums, just to see what they're like. Then I realise that as stupid as Spam can be, it's so much better than anywhere else.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR DECLARATION OF LOVE?
Was it all just a game to you, Drakel? Did it mean nothing? For shame.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. There's something startlingly unique about Spam; I can't put my finger on it.

Yes. Sorry.

It's the people that make it great.

It really is. We bitch and moan about the new people but by the time some of the old people filter out the new people seem as if they've been here forever.

Now without join dates, I can't really remember whose an oldfag and whose not. It doesn't really matter.

There's something disgustingly special here.

A lot of sites die when the old members leave. Or they just become impossible to return to. I used to frequent a site and was extremely into the community, made some great friends. Went back like a year ago and damn it was weird. I had outgrown the site. Went back just now, and it seems like a ghost town. Spam doesn't do that. We're all vaguely intelligent and can handle intelligent discourse. There can be definitive conversations had. It's a nice community even if we "hate" each other.

I second much of this. Half the reason we all profess to love or hate certain members, or even prescribe to that old "hierarchy" that existed, is just because all the drama is entertaining. It's exactly the same reason why entertainment (books, television shows, the news [hardihar I made a joke about news quality I'm so original]) all center about a piece of drama - a problem or issue - or conflict between people (much of reality TV, for example). It's entertaining, it's something to do. It's taken too seriously sometimes, sure, and that's as unfortunate as people beating eachother up over WWE. But the reason even those who are "hated" stay here is because damn, in reality this place is fairly unique, and if they're willing to stick out the bullshit it's probably because in reality they do feel a particular affinity for Spam's unique flavour.

Y'know, I get sickeningly idealistic and sappy about this place past 1am. Fuck you all in the ass. Ah, sweet hatred, that's better.

I think there are times when we all genuinely hate someone and we either fix them or they get the fuck out.

Panda is a great example. Ever. Single. Spammer joined in on that shitstorm. And yet she came back.
She worked on her grammar and spelling, she flung insults, she made great jokes. I totally forgot about her till now.

I miss Panda :'(

True; I suppose I was referring to people who face more consistent "hatred" rather than more radical, instantaneous backlash generated by actual and intense dislike (see: Darthwarman). Nat's a good example, really, though somewhat of a special case. In fact, I might be a good example - I was an idiot, an insecure 15-year-old, back when I joined, involved with the pointless thread and all that, and that whole thread got everyone riled up; but I doubt the hatred or even irritation at this one thread and the people in it was nearly as high as folks professed. It was just another bit of drama, a new plot twist on Spam: The Sitcom.
I'm sad that I never got to really know some of the older Spam members - not those who left before my time, but those who have faded at the same time as I've found my stride here. Folks like you, actually - although you've returned now. I saw enough of them to like them but not know them, sorta sucks.

I've had months of inactivity at times, but I'd never go and say I was a part of that group. I've always kinda lived up to my accidental namesake in that I jump in, crack a few jokes, rile people up, and then disappear into the sidelines.

I remember you being around during some of my earlier Spam days, that's the only reason I mentioned it. Some of it bleeds over just from the fact that people'd mention you all the time when discussing old shenanigans (and others like you - those who pop in and out), making it sound like you'd been really active before.

My first forum is always going to be special, and this one has a community I like. I've been on a couple paintball forums where I never really got invested in it, and I did the BioWare forums, but this is the only one I've signed into on a daily basis and genuinely made some real friends.

Ew, now I'm getting disgustingly sentimental.

I had a similar thing with the forum that I used to be on all the time before finding this one. The Spam section of that site was where I fucked around the most, and that was actually where I did my first play by post roleplay (and other people participating in it were the ones who linked me to RPG). It was good times for a couple years, then lots of people disappeared and it kinda died. I tried going back a couple times, but the magic just wasn't there anymore.

Spam is remarkably resilient though, so that's nice. It has shit periods, but it doesn't really die.
