"A long time ago, if you had told me that there were people out there who could shapeshift and use magic I would have told you that you were insane. If you'd told me that soulmates were real I would have laughed in your face, call me cynical if you want but it's true. Now though, everything has changed and I'm... not sure where to start. Maybe there isn't a good place to start or maybe I should start it off by telling you a story; One that my great grandmother used to tell me, one that she said her grandmother used to tell her. It starts off as any childhood story does with a 'once upon a time'.
Once upon a time, the gods created man but not as we are today... No, back then people had two hearts beating in their chests, four arms, four legs, and they lived forever. Honestly, despite everything I've seen, I still don't quite believe that part but there are some things we'll never know for sure and how all of this actually began is one of them. Still, it is said that some of the Gods disliked that man was immortal like themselves and decided to split man in half. This not only cut their lives short but it also split their bodies and souls. After that, man was cursed to spend their entire lives searching for their other halves... their soulmate. Then, this is where the story gets strange... even for a children's story.
There were those people who were unhappy about the curse the gods had laid upon them and in their pride they turned to dark magic, stripping themselves of their half of a soul and leaving them empty but immortal yet again. Unfortunately, they were not the only ones affected. Their soulmates suffered consequences as well when the half of a soul that had been released returned to their bodies. These people would no longer have soulmates and would be forced to live all their lives alone... Oh, right... back then they believed in reincarnation of souls. Anyway, when the Mother Goddess saw this she grew sad... no soul should have to drift alone for eternity. So, she formed them yet another half a soul and blessed them with it, creating soulmates to take the places of the ones they'd lost.
Still, the human body was not meant to carry so much spirit and the goddess was forced to grant them an animal form to house one piece of their soul and a balance they must maintain in order to keep their whole soul from warring. The balances coincide with the elements... earth, water, fire, and air... but there is also light, dark, life, and death. The empty ones who had given up their souls grew angry because now, not only were their other halves also immortal but they also still had their emotions and a soulmate. The empty ones, known as the Forsaken, began killing off the newly formed beings known as the Tiere and their mates. Tiere who lost their mates became wraithlike creatures who seek nothing but to fill their own hollow existence by feeding off the hopes, dreams, and emotions of others... I guess you could call them ghosts... except really bad ones that cause people to do horrible things like suicide and murder because they drain all the happiness away from the unlucky person they attach themselves to.
Now, the crazy part is that the Tiere are real and so are the Forsaken... and so are the Lost. I, myself, am a Tiere though I didn't know it until others found me. See, when a Tiere dies they are reborn and we have no memory of our past which means that it's up to others like us to find us before the Forsaken do. All Tiere can be reborn unless their soulmate is killed and their soul devoured, they lose their Balance, or they are killed in their animal form... Then, they become Lost. Unfortunately, the only ones who can see the Lost are the Tiere. The Forsaken don't know that they are creating Lost with every one of us they kill and unfortunately for the Forsaken, they can become Lost as well if their Tiere counterpart is killed and their soul devoured... You see our problem?
The number of Lost is growing daily, especially since a person the Lost feeds on who finally succumbs to it becomes a Lost as well. The world is full of the Lost and if you've been wondering why everything has gone to hell in a hand basket (people killing each other, kids committing suicide, people losing their minds) they would be why... The only way to stop it is to release a Lost from its torment... the only problem... Only a Death Balanced Tiere can do it and we only know of one..."
So, this is an rp I've been hoping to get going for a while... We'll see if anyone is interested. First, I should explain a few things...
Balances - A Balance is a set of rules a Tiere must live by to keep their souls in harmony with each other. Elemental tiere have it pretty easy, they get to wield nifty powers and usually their Balance coincides with their personalities... Like, Earth elementals are patient and tend to like to grow things. Water elementals are emotional and tend to be shy. Fire elementals are passionate and outgoing while air elementals tend to be flighty daydreamers. Things get a touch more complex though when it comes to the other four balances...
Light - Well, these guys can never lie but on the up side they can simply not answer a question and they have the ability to always know when someone else is lying. Light balances cannot be err... intimate... with someone they don't love. Light balances can read the past (emotions and events) off of objects they touch.
Dark - Liars plain and simple. Even a Light balance can't tell when a Dark is telling the truth or not. Dark can tell the truth about everything but their premonitions... Yep, they can see the future on occasion. The only problem is they can't control it and they can't tell you about it without speaking in riddle or leaving out hugely important details. Dark balances can't be with someone they truly love... forced to love at a distance or to love someone they cannot have.
Life - Simply put they can restore the recently dead at a great cost to themselves (namely part of their soul) and prevent them from becoming Lost... they can heal wounds also. Life balances cannot kill another. They are also closely tied with the same rules and abilities that apply to Light.
Death - The only balance able to release a Lost from it's torment. Death can sense Lost and see death coming via premonitions much like those of the Dark Balance. Death balances are usually mentally unstable to a point because sensing the Lost means feeling their emptiness... not to mention they can see into the world of the dead... meaning ghosts.
