Last night's episode (MAJOR GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS)

Seriously, spoilers, guys.

Holy fucking shit, I think I may just be done. Like, absolutely fucking done. Oberyn was my favourite character by leaps and bounds, and that was just a fucked up way to go. Fuck. Like, his entire character was literally designed to make you like him, and then have him killed off. The thing that really bugs me is that I know what happens to Tyrion after this, generally speaking, and it makes Oberyn's death literally pointless. He died for nothing. I am so fucking angry.

I haven't read the books, but I really don't feel like Oberyn's death is for absolutely nothing. He wasn't fighting 'for' Tyrion. He was fighting for his sister and family. Fighting for Tyrion only gave him the chance to go against and take down The Mountain. He had his chance, he took it, and I believe he made something of it. Like I said in the last GOT thread, Oberyn wanted a confession. He got it. He was still alive to hear The Mountain confess about what he had done. Better yet, I believe that he was better prepared and is actually going to stick it to The Mountain later on due to poison and such. So, in all, Oberyn's death wasn't pointless. Oberyn got exactly what he wanted.

Oberyn is the first Dornishman to die in the war for the iron throne. He will not be the last. His death accomplished more than you can fathom.

I know he poisoned his spear, that much was obvious, and I know the fate of The Mountain. I'm curious as to what you mean by the rest of that though. What else did his death accomplish?

Doran Martell and the Sand Snakes are spurred into action. Oberyn's death is the impetus for Myrcella's revolution, and I *think* (but I could be wrong) also why Quentyn was sent to Essos. So loooooooooootttts of things just happened!

Not really. If anything Oberyn's death fucks with Doran's plans. It spurs Arrianne and the sand snakes into action, sure. But they all get imprisoned and Arrianne nearly kills Mycella. If anything Oberyn's death nearly gets Dorne fucked hard.

Yeah but it's going to most likely make Doran side with Aegon when he lands and abandon Dany. So it served a plot purpose, just not a Quentyn purpose.

Why is it that Dornish Prince's are introduced and die within one book?

EDIT: OH OH OH, there's also the point that he is the Sun that rises in the West and sets in the East.

So that fullfills part of Dany's prophecy/curse.

From reading comment threads I've learned that a lot of people didn't actually care for Oberyn in the books. The actor really shined and made us love him.

And it was the episode's creators and director who decided to make it as gruesome as it was.

My point is, OP, that GRRM wasn't solely responsible for you getting a fistful of feels shoved up your bum. The "story" wasn't necessarily meant to be THAT brutal.

No that is quite literally exactly what happens in the book. He reaches in and gouges out his eyes. If anything the fight on TV is less gruesome. In the books Gregor cuts a bystander's head in half because he got in the way.

I fell in love with Oberyn in the books, but I have to say Pedro did an amazing job. I couldn't have asked for a better actor. He is easily in my top favorite characters now where he was on the bottom of that list before Pedro.

Finally got around to watching it, FUCK THAT WAS TERRIBLE. I've read the books and I knew that it was coming, but FUCK THAT WAS TERRIBLE. That was a really gruesome death.

Also, I loved Oberyn so much. I was kind of indifferent to him in the books (save for hoping he won and had Tyrion declared Not Guilty), but the show did a great job of making him a lovable character.
