well that was just a race concept
the character idea for that one is much less costing
a simple girl that in the beginning wont even know it herself what she is, looks humanoid but is not and can control water
she wont turn into that elemental state ever, only exception would be a final resort case, but she would then leave the group as she will turn more into an animal and all (something I want to avoid as long as possible cause its kind of like a 'kill' the character situation)

she might be a small class healer further, but that would be all
when she would eventually learn her true nature she needs to learn her trait and to further control her powers, but in the end its never a true power up, just able to turn into a water shape as a power up, learn some possible (but unlikely) new spells, and the trait for water is that they can fall from great heights and recollect them self afterwards
she stills has a lot of weaknessess

you asked for an example of a custom race, so I gave you an entire idea that I had
the elementals are a rare and nearly mystical race and each individual is only 1 element (might not have been clear on that)
but as humanoid they are all like her, human like creatures with control and powers fitting their element.
but can also turn into a animal minded monster and lose their humanity for ever
most live as humanoids cause they rather live a normal live then as a monster, but there are a few out their trough

so yeah that was the race in a nut shell, but I should properly have added the intel of the character I had in mind to show its not just power and monster stuff right away

btw, I am thinking that it might be an idea to keep most of the artifacts locations for my main char to my self, cause some are hidden in natural area's and the first one of these things (as 3 others) can sense the others when close by enough (like you said with the artifacts reacting when the chosen is close by) so it might be an idea that if someone else (like you) gives us a location we go past or trough, thet suddenly my char notice one upgrade for him close by
that way its mostly random when he gets an upgrade, its based mostly (with a few exceptions based on situations) on what others give me to work with for a location ^^

I am interested. Possible backstory: Humans used to exist in the world, but over time, due to wars and the harsh environment, they died off. Now for some reason (most likely a higher power trying to bring humans back into the world) 5 or so humans have been taken from another (our) world, and placed into this harsh fantasy environment.

this allows for half-breed races to exist, such as Draconians (half human/Half dragon)

@ VarionusNW I'd prefer it if the humans never existed in the world before and that no one knows how they got there. That is suppose to be the big mystery in the story.

Also about other species besides elves and dwarves. I'll allow other species but please bring them up here if you want them. that way I can keep tabs on how there are.
