...come to the Town Hall at once. Bring no one with you. the ink on the paper would read as Jinora finished her last letter. It, just like the others, held the same message of urgency she was so desperate to get out right away. Her normally steady hands shook slightly, and she made a fist once she saw her calm demeanor was slipping. And how could it not? With the state of the world as it is, it made the woman question all that the past Avatar did while trying to bring a stop to the misuse of spirits. Today, they roamed free. Many of them were good spirits, helping people, guiding people... but where this is good, light, and peace...there is always evil, darkness, and destruction. It it was in the wake of that beginning destruction, that Jinora finally convinced the Spirit council of Republic City to find the one person alive in the world who could truely understand them.
The Avatar.
Ten letters she wrote to be sent out to a select few that her and the other council members decided on for reasons unknown to them, and reasons that would never be revealed. Their compliance would be non negotiable. It was either do as they were told, or die.
Jinora stood from her desk and walked to a small jar that sat on the open window. The cool night breeze blew the curtains towards her and they brushed her face as she opened the jar. "Spirits, I call upon ten of you to be my messengers of an urgent task." she spoke into the jar. Slowly and one by one the little odd looking spirits would climb out of the vase. and stare at her oddly, awating their orders.
"Deliver these to the hands of those adressed on the letters. Kindly return swiftly with news of their response." she would say. Slowly she reached out her hand towards them and would speak the names of the reciptants starting with her son and then the son of her brother Meelo. "Veilnus... Rin-Ketsu... Taero... Edios.... Akari.... Saekaera... Airi... Xia.... Jia-li..." With each name she spoke, a small spirit would step forward, open its wide mouth to eat the letter, and then jump out the window to be carried haphazardly in the wind. One would question wether they would even get their messages, but Jinora knew those spirits better than anyone. They would get there eventually.
With a heavy sigh, she tierd airbender woman returned to her desk. As soon as she would sit down, another spirit, this time of one that took the shape of a bird, would fly in through her window. One look at the spirit and jinora already knew what his news was.
"It has happened again."
"Not just one this time... an entire family this time. Children and all... faceless." The bird paused and looked just as upset as Jinora felt.
"Koh is at it again. There is no way we can stop him."
"Grrr, stupid good for nothing little-! NOOO!!" Akari yelled as she messed up the nose of her statue again. With an angry and frustrated sigh, she turned the whole thing to water and forcefully bended the puddle into the pond she sat next to in her backyard. Why was she making an ice sculpture in the middle of the night? Well, it was far from a choice really. She had to make one for a little gir'l birthday party tomorrow, and since ice sculptures had a shelf life of about ten hours, she couldnt have made it any sooner. This was how she spent many of her nights. Sitting in her backyard, sculpting ice into all different kinds of shapes. People, animals, places, plants, you name it. She could sculpt works of art, and the entire Republic City knew it. It was a gist she had, but as a result...she often found herself sleeping away her life during the day when she wasent working.
Akari had a great personality. Kind all the time, but firm when she needed to be. Her social skills that were once great were starting to get a bit rusty. Every day it was Sleep, eat, sculpt. That was all, and though she enjoyed it very much, she was longing for something more. something so much more than just the small backyard of her tiny home she could barely afford to keep. She did have one companion, and that was Dozo. Her pet Cat Deer she bought from a pet shop deep in the city. Along with the few turtle ducks that lived in the bushed near her pond, Dozo was the closest thing she had to a friend. Though he was just a kitten, no bigger than a small sake of flour, he was quite the adventurous type and more than once she'd have to explain to other pet owners why he picked a fight with other animals. It usually ended up with her saying, "C'mon he's just a kitten. he doesn't know any better."
Just as she was thinking about him, she heard his tiny growl from just inside the house. Picking herself up off the ground, Akari made her way inside to look for her pet. "Dozo, where are you?" she called. She saw him run up to her from the dark hallway. He let out a soft meow before prancing off towards the front door. Maybe we have a visitor? she thought as she followed him. Stretching her arms over her head as she reached the door, she opened it and looked out into the night. There was no one there. "Dozo, what are you-?" she gasped softly and jumped back in fright when she looked down to see a little spirit creature looking at her. Its head tilted slowly, then rattled back into place with a soft noise. "Ewwww." she said with a frown before nervously bending down and holding her hand out. The little spirit climbed onto her hand and she stood, closed the door, and walked inside.
She flicked the lights on in her kitchen then knelt once more to sit at the table in the center of it. Putting the little thing down on the table, Akari just stared at it, and Dozo walked over, seemingly confused at what the thing was for as well. He lay on the table next to it, his head resting on his paws. Akari reached out and sctarched his head, and the little spirit turned and patted Dozo's nose softly before turning to her. Akari raised a single brow as the spirits mouth opened up and out came a letter adressed to her. "I'm going to pretend I didn't just see that." she said to the little thing. At least the letter wasent wet with spit or anything. She opened it carefully and noted the beautiful script of whoever had wrote it before reading it out loud.
There was no sign off, just the brief, few lined letter that made Akari's blood run cold. If a council woman was asking for help, then hell she needed to step up. Though she was afraid and confused, this was almost what Akari was asking for. change. A chance to do something more than fret with ice in her backyard. She looked at the little spirit for a moment before she turned her head to Dozo. his small head rose from its resting place on his paws once she did. "What do you think Dozo? A little danger is healthy I heard." she said to him. Petting him once more, she stood and went to her room to change from her work clothes to her casual clothes. She untucked the hair that gped in her shirt before slipping on her boots. Dozo came running in and he stared at her. Glancing at him, she said "You're not coming with me. No way. I can't afford to let you get hurt." Standing once more, she moved past her pet and back into the kitchen to get the little spirit guy. Making her way to the door, she turned to look once more at her best friend. His brown eyes stared back into her amber ones and she sighed. "Oh come on then you baby. You slip up once its back home, got it?" He made a little meow of approval before running up to her. She knelt and he jumped up on her head, the perfect place for the little guy to stay out of trouble.
Akari closed her door and began a fast paced walk towards the town Hall in the dead of the night. Fear was working to help her for once as she took all the busy streets of the city on the way there. The threat of Jinora's letter was still in the back of her mind. What kind of threat was so urgent that the city would no longer be safe...? And more importantly, what the hell was Akari supposed to do about it. I sculpt ice for a living. What the hell did she see in me that made her think i could fight bad guys, or whatever this crap is all about? she thought to herself. Losing track of time in her thoughts, Akari was surprised to find herself at the Town Hall faster than she anticipated. She stood at the bottom of the large stone steps and stared up at the building.
Turn around Akari, this is bad. Your too weak to do anything heroic...
That was the thought that made her take the first step.
