Shadows Among Us

6/29/2014 - Game has launched, feel free to prepare your character sheets which you will post in this thread which if accepted I will add to the depository and wiki. GMs are myself and Wraith so PM if you need immediate communication if we are not present in OOC or Chatroom.

Welcome to Ultimate Comics: DC, an intoxicating land where creativity for creativity's sake can take priority and enable you to render stories and events you could only have dreamed of in all of your previous mundanity. In this universe, nothing here is the mainstream continuity of DC - this is a world forged from people like you and a lot of work on my part. Continuity that exists in this roleplay is anything on the linked wiki in the information section and in the story above. We welcome you to a unique narrative opportunity to take any DC Comics character and reimagine them in a way that makes them pleasurable for you to write unique and original stories with.

Whether you're one for emotional drama or a sucker for physical trauma, the vast range of characters available could fit any genre or any purpose you could reasonably imagine. The Flash as a sarcastic teenager coming into what responsibility truly means? Boom. The Question as a hard-nosed police detective serving a hierarchy he doesn't care for? Q'd up. Slade Wilson as not a mercenary but a successful military man looking to become President? Stroke it. As long as they have appeared in a canonical DC tale on either the page or the screen they're free for refurbishment. Here, the DC UNIVERSE is yours to mold.

As a sandbox themed collaborative story the keys to the DC universe are given to you—the player—but not without limitations or guidance. Of course no rule will be made that contradicts the host websites own rules, so keep those in mind when you write content. In contrast to a linear or progression themed collaborative story, the goal of a sandbox is to allow you to craft character arcs, NPC casts, and almost assistant GM decisions that don’t contradict the other rules. The style of role-play was explained to me as an “interactive multi-author fanfiction” and the idea of this sort of concurrent thing is apt. However interaction much like any role-play is the bread and butter of the game so we don’t shy away from interactions, world-scale gatherings, and so forth. My job in this role-play will be to set up events every so often but for the most part do the same thing as the players in setting up my stories.

Plot & Background

During the early twentieth century the idea of “metahumans” and “superheroes” were an obscure fragment invented in the course of fantasy seen in early comic books. However, the origin of the reality of the nature of such things were not merely fantasy. Such origins came out within the Second World War when eventually it became evident that a new type of arms race had begun during the world war as the administration of Nazi Germany exerted their own research into theoretical science and mythological magic as if such things were obtainable to win the war in their favor. Amongst these scientists in the company of the German war machine included Doctor Albrecht Krieger, who on report had believed he was close to cracking the code on perfecting evolution as rumors hit that a German expedition had acquired the Spear of Destiny. A task force was initially set up by the United States government whilst working with the allied forces to combat this alarming threat under the guise that it was not propaganda. Headed by Terry Sloane, the cover team comprised of Rex Tyler, Ted Knight, Lee Travis, Myron Mazursky, Elizabeth Lawrence, and Charles McNider. The team continued to work long after the war as a covert team of specialists until the team was disbanded sometime during the Cold War.

For generations, the world that we know has for the most part been publicly void of the concepts that today we are facing. The dawn of the Superhero came vividly as in the year of 2009 the heroes that were out there finally decided it was time to reveal themselves. Two icons were made in what seemed like an instant Metropolis saw their 'Superman' stand in clear view as a plane veered off course whilst the Gotham underworld cried out as a 'Batman' made short work of their henchmen. These two icons would create a butterfly effect as men and women alike came out declaring their role in the world. These cities would witness men faster than the eye could follow, women with incredible strength, and seemingly alien constructs and forms; none of them manipulating these powers for ill, such vigilance made many romanticize these idols which sent individuals (like G. Gordon Godfrey), religious groups, and militant groups into aggressive tandem. The few critics of these superheroes would be the vocal minority and for the most part the American Government that should have been frightened or concerned only sat and allowed such vigilantism to go on as they dealt with what they felt was more imperative.

In 2011, it was here a terrible force approached not the United States, but Planet Earth. This antagonist would be known as Star’ro, a parasitic alien that intended to use Earth as its breeding ground whilst it fed on the sentient life of the world. Despite being at a disadvantage, Bruce takes to his prototype ‘Batwing’ to respond to the threat which would occupy his primary concern for months as the governments of the world were overwhelmed by the force of the alien. Eventually, an alien named J’onn J’onzz reached out to Bruce and soon the caped crusader found himself fighting alongside with the other heroes of the world: Superman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Hawkgirl, and J’onn who likened himself as the Martian Manhunter. Through their combined strength and intelligence Star’ro found itself defeated. Superman realizing the scope of what they could do together suggests forming a “Justice League” to combat threats of this scale which at the time Batman seems indifferent towards but offers them his aid if they need it.

In 2012, Then came the first organized group of villains that the Justice League found themselves contending against, they called themselves “Injustice Gang” as an ironic counter to the Justice Leagues own name – led by the former protégé of Professor Ted Knight named Justin Ballantine who took up the alias of Libra in an organized attempt to test his prototype weapon—the Trans-mortifier, a device with theoretical flawless energy with limitless capabilities. The first battle in a chain of conflicts that lasted a year began on the outskirts of Metropolis as Libra intended to see how much nuclear energy the trans-mortifier could absorb and “redistribute”. This caused a near meltdown at the power plant in question. The members of the “Injustice Gang” who were little more than paid mercenaries to bodyguard the project prepared to contend with The Justice League. This wouldn’t be the first battle Libra and his Injustice Gang would lose. As the Justice League contended with rogues galleries and the Injustice Gang, the anti-superhero programs (like H.I.V.E and C.A.D.M.U.S) began to see their projects finally breathe into fruition.

In 2013, As New Year’s Day passes by, Batman finds himself in a strange situation as Oracle reports a meteorite’s collision with Earth which he requests Superman to respond to immediately through the Oracle network which has been adopted by the Justice League as an open method of communication between the heroes and to observe threats. At this point the founding blocks of “The Justice League” are set in stone though Batman adamantly only offers his aid feeling distant about being a ‘face’ of such a group.

1941 - U.S. Government Officials elect Terry Sloane to combat Nazi Germany's developments in pseudo-science.
2009 - A mysterious superhuman stops a 747 from crashing in Metropolis, beginning the "true" superhero era.
2009 - A mysterious figure with the appearance that names him as "The Batman" debuts in Gotham.
2009 - The Bat's Crusade effectively shuts down the "Roman Empire" as Carmine Falcone is admitted to Blackgate Prison.
2010 - "The Joker" debuts in Gotham but disappears before he is apprehended. This signifies a rise of 'supervillains'.
2011 - The Justice League forms as an alien parasite known as "Sta’rro" attacks the planet. This event is noted as "The Dawn of Justice".
2012 - The Injustice Gang is formed by "Libra" and becomes enemies of the Justice League.
2013 - Kara-El crashes in rural Kentucky, Superman appears on the scene.
2013 - An android named "Amazo" attacks the Justice League.
2014 - News that Alan Scott has not reported back to Oa after a deep space mission surfaces after his ship—the Starheart is found drifting in space with no trace of the green lantern. He is declared MIA.
2014- Present Day

"Advanced roleplaying should focus on developing interesting and complex characters that become part of plot-lines which catch the imagination and inspire the writer behind them to exercise creativity. It is mature, humorous, imaginative, tragic, terrifying, passionate, and rife with descriptive language and characters with real personality and relatable cares. Quality posting is far better than needless novels, yet one should never neglect detail when one feels the need. However, while word and paragraph requirements ought to be unnecessary, single paragraphs cannot contain enough detail to suffice."

Below are a set few rules guidelines to play by:

 You may choose any character appearing in the continuities that envelope DC Comics including the Bruce Timm continuity, Wildstorm, the Cinematic Universe(s), and so forth. Characters from Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, IDW, and similar prints will not be accepted as expected.

 Character creation will start at one character and may be increased given the GM staff finds said writer able to handle more characters or has sufficient creative drive. In previous games we’ve had a lot of “concepts” but rarely were they actively written.

 Travel involving time, dimensional multiverses, or any other concepts would be on a GM-approved basis.

 Please do not kill player-created characters or important NPC’s unless given the go-ahead to do so.

 Do not impose on arcs without asking for permission; don’t jump into a scene for the sake of interaction; your characters should have sufficient reasoning to want to be in a cooperative scene and noting that— do be courteous and respectful about approaching or possibly interfering in character arcs. While this is more a suggestion then a rule, we should be courteous to those who are planning arcs. Communication is the key.

 Infinite Crisis/Elseworlds Stories – not happening, don’t even ask.

 Respect the GM staff and their authority.

 Be creative.

 Competing applications of characters have a 10-20 hour limit to be presented and from there the moderation staff will decide who fits better or if at all.

 Notes are an optional and malleable part of your CS’s – just because I have plans for Harvey Dent as the Batman player does not mean I can’t retrofit those plans to accommodate your interest in playing that character or characters related to them. Notes should be used as guides and pre-cautionary plans or pre-established lore points and do not mean to rule the role-play by disallowing concepts. Again, communicate.

 Legacies (NPCs, sidekicks, rogues) fall under the jurisdiction of the hero they are traditionally designed around. If you want to play The Joker, The Batman player has to be okay with it and your information should never contradict what they have written in their CS. This one is malleable, but again—communicate.

 It is recommended/suggested your first application to this game is somebody who can "soloplay" well enough which is generally a protagonist. While I'm making this more of a guideline instead of a rule, I hope we'll see this to help make the game more driven.

Identity
John 'Constantine' Constantine

Origin & Backstory
John Constantine was born into the shit that would follow him for the rest of his life - and appropriately enough, he arrived in Liverpool, 1989. His twin asphyxiated in the womb on John's umbilical cord, and his mother, Mary-Anne Constantine, died giving birth to him and his stillborn brother because an earlier forced abortion had weakened her womb, causing it to rupture and bleed out. Thomas Constantine, John's father, and the man who had forced the abortion upon his wife, was incapable of accepting the responsibility of Mary-Anne's death, and instead blamed his surviving son, John - and they grew up harboring a deep dislike of one another. Thomas had little involvement in John's upbringing, and much of his care was left to his older sister, Cheryl Constantine. After their father descended into alcoholism and was imprisoned for petty theft and voyeurism, Cheryl and John moved to Northampton to live with their Aunt and Uncle for a brief time, before returning after Thomas' release. It was their return to both Liverpool and their father that set John off onto his journey into the magical and occult.

John had discovered his ancestry in Northampton, his blood belonging to a long family line known as the Laughing Magicians, legendary mages known for their power over Synchronicity and their uncanny ability to bluff and trick even gods. This discovery led him to delve into the practices of his lineage, and he began to partake in magic. His first act was to seal away his childhood innocence and vulnerability in a small wooden toy-box he once used, ridding himself of the burdens of virtues he'd lost long ago. Later on, in his teenage years, John botched a curse that left his father withered and frail and doomed to die - and subsequently ran from home, his sister, and Liverpool, heading to London and making a permanent home in an apartment with his roommate, Francis 'Chas' Kramer, who would go on to be John's oldest, closest, and longest surviving friend.

~

2008: Zatanna Zatara, Mucous Membrane, and Astra

John soon got involved in the occult circles of London's population. He practiced his magics and learned more about the occult world lying behind the mortal one, and began to travel to other cities and countries to expand his knowledge. In New York, 2008, he met a talented female magician called Zatanna Zatara, and the two began a relationship. Together, they grew enamored with Punk Rock after attending several gigs, and John was inspired to put together his own punk band, a three-man piece called Mucous Membrane. They released an album, and it was on their first tour that John got his first taste of magical heroism, and the disasters it would rain down upon his life.

On tour with his band in Newcastle, John stumbled across the aftermath of a horrific magical incident: an abused child - a little girl called Astra - had taken revenge on her adult tormentors by tapping into her raw innate magical abilities, conjuring a vicious monster to slaughter them in the middle of an orgy - and now the monster refused to leave the mortal plane. With a recklessness that would soon enough become his MO, John convinced Zatanna, Chas, his bandmates, and several other occultist friends to pour their power into summoning a demon of their own to combat the monster. Sadly, while their abilities were enough to bring forth the creature, they were not enough to bind it to their will. The demon, Nergal, killed the monster, and then tormented Constantine's friends and snatched Astra away to Hell. John suffered a nervous breakdown, severing ties with everyone he knew, and eventually being committed to Ravenscar Psychiatric Hospital, only ever keeping regular contact with Chas Kramer.

~

2010: Lung Cancer, the Triumvirate of Hell, and Blackmailing God

Constantine was released from Ravenscar in 2010 with a clean sign-off on his mental health - despite persisting nightmares - and several 'goodbyes' from inmates and keepers alike. Constantine had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer - brought on by his continuing smoking habit of nearly 30-a-day - and he'd been let out to enjoy his last days in freedom. The world had changed during his time in the ward, and was now filling up with extraordinary men and women, on all sides of the moral compass, and while Constantine knew that perhaps he was one of them, he refused his call. Instead, he traveled to Ireland to seek out a friend he once had who he believed could help cure him with magic and rituals.

He found Brendan dead, having drunk himself to death with rampant alcoholism and a suspiciously infinite supply of the best wines known to the world. It was at Brendan's funeral that Constantine had his first encounter with the entity that would become his greatest nemesis - the First of the Fallen, one of the three Triumvirate Rulers of Hell. Brendan had sold his soul to this being in exchange for an endless cellar of the finest wines in the cosmos, and the First had arrived to collect. Not wanting his old friend's soul to be eternally tormented in Hell, Constantine proposed a final toast to the mortal - spiking the First's wine with Holy Water, and tricking him into drinking it, rendering him helpless and unable to collect Brendan's soul. Unable to collect before midnight, Brendan's contract was declared null, and his soul ascended to Heaven. Wounded by the insult of being fooled by a mortal, the First declared Consantine's soul his by the 'right of insult', and swore to collect him upon his death and render unto him torment twofold, enough to make up for the soul he lost.

Slowly dying from cancer, Constantine created a plan. In secret, he summoned both the Second and Third of the Fallen - the others of the Triumvirate - separately and struck up deals with both, pledging his soul now three times over. Soon, the First, Second, and Third discovered Constantine's scheme, and realized that should he die, the Triumvirate would erupt into a war over ownership that would tear apart Hell and of which the only true winner would be God and His angels. Too proud to form an alliance, they instead decided that their only option was to cure John of his cancer, and allow him to live. While doing this, however, they also took their power to create a counterpart to Constantine, a Demon formed of all his worst attributes and vices, but lacking none of his cunning or magical prowess. In doing this, they were assured that when Constantine's soul finally came to rest in Hell, it would be consumed by this Demon, whose power would be near unparalleled, and used for naught but evil and the destruction of Earth and Heaven. John knew this, and in cunning desperation, contacted God. His aspect appeared, and came to converse by campfire. John warned Him of the demonic power that would be released if his soul was to come into Hell, and that such a being would surely topple the Triumvirate and unleash countless Demons upon Earth and to assault Heaven, and shut the Gates of Hell so that the damned would have no rest, and be forced to rise again. Constantine blackmailed God into keeping his soul from Hell to prevent this. God knew that the events John described would come to pass, and agreed - but before His aspect disappeared from Earth, He warned John of great suffering that would soon visit itself upon his life.

~

2013: The Magic War, Rosacarnis, The Return of the First, and Cheryl

John drifted for a time, travelling throughout and between England and the US, performing as a stage magician and learning more about magic and his abilities, and occasionally being drawn into occult business. He found himself in America for Sta'rro and the 'Dawn of Justice', aiding with his magic where he could, but soon left again, and came back to Britain to reconcile with his sister Cheryl, whom he'd thought dead. It was at that time that a Magic War erupted in London, and Constantine found himself thrust into the middle of it, his sister dragged in with him. He allied with an entity known as the Shadow Dog against a demonic being known as The Beast; the ensuing battle and eventual victory left him vulnerable, and he was ensnared by the demon Rosacarnis, under commands from the First, who bound him to her will for day. She had John father three demonic children, who then went on to slaughter anyone who had ever known Constantine - from family and friends to enemies and those who had met him only briefly as an ally in the Magic War. Cheryl's husband, a pious man, was whipped into religious fanaticism and pushed to see his wife as a witch - and she was duly slain by his hand. In grief, Constantine dove into Hell to retrieve her soul and resurrect her, accompanied by the demon Nergal.

It was not long through their journey that they encountered the one who barred Constantine's entrance into Hell; the demon created from his negative aspects. John was forced to allow Nergal possession of him to defeat the Demon Constantine, tainting his soul irreparably. Eventually, John and Nergal arrived at the hall of Rosacarnis, wherein a feast was being held with Rosacarnis, the First, and Constantine's three children in attendance. John baited Rosacarnis into attempting to slay him in return for Cheryl's release, but as she attempted to do so, the First intervened and immediately killed her as well as two of the three demon children she had forced John to sire, declaring that Constantine was his to collect when he deemed.

Alone with Constantine, the First summoned up Cheryl's soul. He deemed her pure and innocent, a soul that truly did not belong in Hell - but offered her a deal. Telling her that her husband killed himself after murdering her, and was therefore twice-damned, the First offered to fairly divide his punishment between him and Cheryl if she remained to be tormented in Hell of her own free will. Constantine argued and pleaded in vain against it, screaming that her husband had murdered her and was not deserving of such mercy at one's own suffering - but ultimately, Cheryl still loved her husband too much, and agreed to the deal, deciding to stay in Hell, and preventing Constantine from bringing his only remaining family back to Earth. The First gloated, and sent John back home, and in mad grief he ran into the night and fled to America, turning his back on Britain and the torment he suffered there, only Chas Kramer following him.

~

Now, it is 2014, and Constantine is 25 years old, a resident of Chicago who likes to holiday in Gotham, earning a living as a Private Investigator of both mundane and paranormal matters, as well as being drawn into occult conflicts and slowly growing into his role as a hero of Earth - as much as he hides from it. While cynical, disillusioned, and foul-mouthed, and still going strong with his smoking habit, Constantine is a compassionate Humanist at heart, and struggles to keep the forces of both Heaven and Hell in check within himself and in the world around him, seeking to keep humanity free from either influence.

Powers & Abilities
While Constantine's magical prowess is most certainly not to be dismissed out-of-hand, he rarely relies on it, especially in the midst of combat. He faces his challenges instead armed with the cunning and quick-thinking that his family line is nearly legendary for, as well as his vast knowledge of the paranormal and occult, his skill at manipulating friend and foe alike, and his extensive list of contacts - which, combined, are often more useful than the spells, rituals, and curses at his command. John Constantine is considered by many to be the world's greatest con-man.

Constantine's sorcery is still a force to be reckoned with, however. With experience in Evocation (the calling of supernatural entities), Illusion (the distortion and misdirection of the senses), and Necromancy (the summoning of, and communication with, the dead), John Constantine's magic spans many fields. He also has a wide range of protective magics at his command, shielding him from both physical and supernatural attacks, and well as protecting his mind from offenses such as telepathy, possession, and mind control. John is also capable of using sigils and runes to block omnipresence for a time, rendering his actions completely secret for a period of time, similar to when he dealt with the Second and Third of the Fallen to trick the First. John's offensive magic is less practiced than his defenses, but still capable of mild electrokinesis, telekinesis, pyrokineses and immobilisation. John's magic has also permanently granted him a form of Third Sight, allowing him to see Demons, Angels, and Half-Breed for their true selves constantly, regardless of what disguises and illusions they have thrown up to hide themselves among mortals, as well as allowing him to utilise magic to dispell camoflauge.

Finally, beyond his wielding of the arcane arts, Constantine is also versed in the use of stage magic, including sleight of hand, pick-pocketing, and escapology. He is also in possession of many magical - or anti-magical - artifacts, some of which he uses regularly to battle the forces of Heaven and Hell.

How is this character different?
My Constantine is a highly-edited mash-up of the three canon interpretations that currently exist; a mix of his early days in DC Vertigo's Hellblazer, his later appearances in the DCU alongside more commonly known heroes like Superman and Batman, and his newest incarnation in DC's New52. Several events are yet to happen to Constantine, if indeed they happen at all, and others have been removed entirely to allow a more streamlined, intuitive history. My Constantine is younger, brasher, bolder, but still tormented and scarred, with some aspects edited and shaken up to allow him personal quirks that will serve to truly mark him as my own interpretation of his character. Hopefully, he is one that will enter the UDC universe a better fit, and one that will not appear jarring alongside the capes and costumes of other characters.

What is your goal with this character?
My Constantine's immediate goal is the retrieval of Astra's soul from Hell, a fate he indirectly inflicted on the girl, and something he considers his greatest failure that still haunts him today. Beyond that, Constantine defends the world from the influences of both Heaven and Hell, and works to solve crimes and mysteries of both mundane and occult natures. Hopefully, he will come to be friends with the major heroes of the DC universe, and go on to recruit Deadman, Zatanna, Black Orchid, and Andrew Bennet to form the Justice League Dark. He will also deal with the First and his activity, and resolve supernatural phenomenon that have been haunting him since his birth.

Sample Post
John Constantine took a long drag on his cigarette. He was stood on the sidewalk on a back-alley, nondescript street of New York City, a small sign hanging above a single wooden door embedded in marble architecture. The sign read 'Midnite's', and behind the door lay burgundy carpeting, stairs leading down into the Lounge, and dim, red-tinted lighting. John stubbed out his cig on the wall he was leaning against and blew the last of the smoke into the air. It clung to him and wreathed his neck as he pushed through the door into the Midnight Lounge.

Constantine stamped down the stairs, his hands thrust into the side pockets of his trenchcoat. A bouncer awaited him at the bottom, a velvet rope hanging across a doorway on his left and a neatly-stacked deck of black-backed cards on a small chrome stool-table on his right. John grunted as they locked eyes, acknowledging a recognition born of repetition. John's eyes ran over the bouncer's array of runic and symbolic tattoos, particularly the triangular designs on the tops of each of his wrists. He could keep John out through physical force alone, but he was more than capable of keeping the occult world's nastier beasties out too. John gulped mentally. He always did.

He reached the bottom and stood dutifully in front of the doorman, who looked Constantine and his dusty coat up and down, and then reached for the deck. In a movement too fast for John to see the mechanics of, he removed a random card from the deck and showed it to Constantine, black-side up. Constantine didn't skip a beat.
"The Fool, ya witty bastard."
There was a micro-second's worth of an amused smirk that flashed across the bouncer's tattooed face, and then the card was back in the deck, and the velvet rope had been pulled off from across the entryway, allowing Constantine to go in. He did so, and was immediately hit by loud music and the smell of smoke, liquor, and just the faint hint of copper. Or maybe blood. John didn't waste any time in what was essentially the lobby - instead, he headed past the bar and toward the back of the room to a small mahogany door, the dark wood almost camouflaged against the brown leather buttoned to the wall. John knocked thrice. A small porthole slid open, a pair of beady eyes behind. They scanned Constantine up and down, and then the porthole slid shut. John waited, heard several metal ka-thunks as the door was unlocked, and then stepped in as it swung open and then shut behind him.

He saw Papa Midnite immediately. The voodoo-baron was splayed out across a circular booth in the corner of the room, a single figure sat in front of him - hunched forward, hands on the table, hair slicked back with a mixture of grease, wax, and sweat. He'd almost look nervous - if John didn't see him for what he was. A Half-Breed, some unholy child that didn't live up to the annihalistic expectations of its father. Sections of his skin were rotted and a single gnarled, curled horn spiraled out from the left side of his forehead. Whatever glamour he had was irrelevant, stripped away by John's Third Eye. Constantine was a magician, and he'd seen enough of the world not to be fooled by parlor tricks anymore. He waited until the Half-Breed had finished whatever conversation he and Midnite were having, and then took his place as he left the table for a different table and a drink.

"Thought your sister persuaded you to leave the mob business." Constantine sat down, leaning back in the seat and pushing the tails of his coat out from under him. Midnite sat up, arms no longer stretched out against the leather of the booth-bench. He raised an eyebrow.
"I must have regrown a conscience when she pulped me in front of the Empire State." He replied, and Constantine grunted in amusement. "But he wasn't a convict." Constantine grunted again, rolling his neck to watch the half-breed subtly over his shoulder out the corner of his eye.
"Certainly looks like an escapee to me..." He muttered, and Midnite frowned.
"You know the rules of my house, Constantine. Under my roof, you will abide by them." Constantine turned back, eyeing Midnite. "What are you here for, John."
John sniffed. "Same thing. Stiff drink, some light conversation, and a warm place to light one u..." He trailed off as he opened his pack of fags and found them empty. "Aah, dammit."

"Light conversation, John? Any particular subject?" Papa Midnite asked as he beckoned with a finger for two glasses and some liquor to pour into them. John waited while the drinks were brought over, keeping an eye on the half-breed at the table across the room - he was half-certain he was doing the same - and then eagerly took his glass as Midnite finished pouring. He drank before speaking, and drank when he'd finished.
"Hell. Souls. Little girls. Keepers and whereabouts."
"Still? Constantine, no one knows anything about her. Nergal took her and put her in some dark, forgotten corner, and he's not talking." Midnite sighed, but Constantine didn't move, back to watching the half-breed. He had noticed the horn twitch as he'd looked up sharply at the Midnite naming Nergal. Constantine wanted to test the waters.
"She's somewhere, Midnite."
"She's gone, John. Astra is gone." Another twitch. John faked a relent, throwing his hands up and finishing his drink.
"Fine. You win. She's gone." Papa Midnite tutted, half-smiling at John's obvious front. John got up. "I need a new pack of Silk Cut anyway." He said. The half-breed rose slowly as well. John suppressed a smug smirk. "I'll see you around, Midnite."
"Not by my skulls, John. You're not in New York for long."
Constantine waved him off and left - the half-breed following. With any luck, he thought he had the advantage. Constantine rubbed the sigils inked onto his forearms.

Yara, Yasmin Starr, Power Girl

How is this character different?
To state the obvious, this is a totally different Power Girl, and not just because she's ginger. I've done away with the inter-dimensional nature of the character and instead made her another Krypton-native, just one that never knew krypton outside of a growth pod. She's a trained killer that doesn't know it, with built in trigger words and psychological conditioning.

What is your goal with this character?
To play a character I find interesting, in a way that hasn't been done before. In a similar manner she's set apart from the rest of the Kryptonians, but now as a separate being, rather than a parallel Super Girl. I hope to get her stuck in and involved with the more established characters, as both a newcomer and someone with equal power to the greats, a scary, but ultimately benevolent, unknown entity.

"Yasmin, slow down a second."

It took her a moment to respond. Not because it wasn't her real name, that she felt the loss of her Kryptonian identity. No, her brain worked faster than any human alive and teaching it to accept a new identity took less than an hour. It was simply because she really didn't want to slow down anymore. She had already decreased her pace to within range realistic for a human, so that moving around their apartment Jane could perceive her. She wanted to dash, to open up her throttle and be everywhere within a second, but in their living space it made Jane uncomfortable, and it would probably ruin her clothes.

"Can't, need to get to class, then labs, then I have a photoshoot, then I want to grab a few things from the library. I'd like to fly for a bit, then I have at least one date to drag myself to." Yara bit into an apple as she raced around collecting what she needed for the day. Books mainly, going into a rucksack slung nonchalantly off one shoulder. Grey jeans with a number of horizontal rips and a white top, cropped just above her naval, rounded off a simple outfit she still managed to rock. Only once all her books were collected, did she finally turn to face her room mate.

"Sorry, it's just some of your actual friends, rather than teachers and random dates, might be feeling a little bit neglected lately." Jane replied with a slight smirk, hands on her hips as she watched her alien friend approach. The smirk drew a momentary pout from the redhead, before they both broke out in larger smiles, Yara embracing Jane with enough force to lift her off the ground, in a manner only slightly uncomfortable.

"I promise I'll be free to hang out the rest of the week, just had a few busy weeks, from tomorrow, you'll soon grow tired of me being constantly around once again." Letting go of the petite brunette, Yara began to make her way to the door, winking at her friend before waving as she looked set to escape their abode, only pausing following a comment from Jane.

"Aren't you meant to avoid eating before a photoshoot? Even student ones." It was taunting, rather than a genuine question, as Yara took a collective of bites from her apple, throwing the core straight into the bin across the room.

"Oh please, like it's my abs they want me for," Yara laughed, placing a hand on a stomach that while many stages away from being unattractive, was certainly not rock hard abs, before disappearing out of the door, into the corridors of their apartment block. Hardly opulent, it was at least clean and tidy, putting it into the rather more classy section of student accommodation in the Big Apple. With some haste, she began to descend, taking the steps as they were faster, and running within the human range, she could hardly tire herself let alone slow down. She passed the odd plant pot, noticed a few new cracks in the walls and had to dodge the elderly lady from the floor below, although still saving enough time for a pleasant drinking. Within a minute she burst out into the crisp air of a New York Summer Morning. If it wasn't for the flood of solar energy, she'd probably feel a tad cold in her current outfit, but soon the city would be warming up and she'd look less under dressed. Just as she was about to set of at a jog towards the first item on her agenda for the day, starting with crossing the street, she was nearly flattened as a black SUV blasted past. Well, in reality, she would have cut through the car like a knife, but she avoided it all the same, earning only a rude blasting of horns. Seconds later, in rather lame pursuit, a pair of police cars streamed by. She sighed. Yara had little care for the specifics of human law, varied as it was, but she did care for needlessly risking life. Within a blink of an eye, the figure of Yara disappeared.

Several blocks down, now clad with a black hoodie obscuring her features, the same figure materialised in the road. A few cars had to swerve, but then the same SUV was approaching. It was her last test, possibly they hadn't meant to be so reckless, that she'd tried to cross to hastily. Maybe they weren't so careless with human life. When the vehicle closed to within a few meters of her, she realised they planned to go throw the female in their way. Then she held out her hand.

In the next moment they connected, faster than the human eye the car started to wrap around her hand before she gripped it, the front of the car twisting and taking the full force, pulling the rest of the SUV forwards but taking the greater part of the force, until the windscreen was an inch from her face. Tinted, her vision easily cleared through it to the startled figures within. Then her eyes flashed, the glass broke, and she had grabbed the men within, climbing into the air with the pair screaming in her hands. New York was a big city, but a Kryptonian had them dangled from the roof of the Empire state building, welded into the side with a commandeered, disused street lamp. Crouching above them on the roof itself, the flailing criminals looked up at her.

"What the fuck are you doing? There's no supers in New York."

The term Supers nearly made her growl. Superman, Supergirl, House El. Her very nature was already connected with them, and for whatever reason, the thought brought her great disdane.

"Trust me...I am not part of this Super family, and there is nothing Super about me. But you know what I am?" Their faces were masks of terror, likely the same feeling many had felt at their hands this morning.

"Power, pure power." Her eyes burned a bright red, the heat itself starting to singe their hairs as their bodies struggled to decide on a course of action, try to escape the heat, or cling to the metal holding them in place above the city.

"You will not harm another soul in this city, not while I'm here."

And then she was gone.

Identity
Jonah Hex

Origin & Backstory

Jonah Hex was born in 1980 and abandoned as a newborn at the Black Cherry Indian Reservation in New Mexico. All that was known about the baby was the name pinned to his diaper: Jonah Hex. He was taken in by a local family in the rez. Hex was a favorite of the family's patriarch and reservation chief, Thomas Eagle Feather. Eagle Feather taught Hex how to hunt, shoot, and track a wide variety of animals.

While Hex lived with the Eagle Feather family, the Black Cherry Reservation slowly withered away around them. The poor Native Americans who lived there were leaving their once proud homeland to seek jobs elsewhere, those that stayed behind were old men and drunks. Thomas Eagle Feather, seeing his beloved reservation crumbling, succumbed to alcoholism and became a violent abuser as the years went on. When Hex turned 18, he left the reservation never to return.

Unable to find work off the rez, Hex joined the Army.. Hex served as a corporal in the Army, under Company CO Jack Turnbull. After 9/11, Hex's regiment was dispatched to Afghanistan. While there in 2005, Hex stumbled upon Turnbull raping and torturing a young Afghan girl. Hex and Turnbull fought, with Turnbull permanently disfiguring Hex in the fight. Using his assault rifle, Hex shot the man dead. He lied about the circumstances of Turnbull's death, saying the Afghan girl killed Turnbull with his own gun while he watched. Hex was given an other than honorable discharge from the Army and came back to America, unsure of what to do and where to go. It was while he was in Kentucky, drowning his troubles into a bottle that he found the answer. He was at a bar one night when he saw a man arrested by a bounty hunter. After a lot of thought and consideration, Hex went about applying for a bounty hunter's license.

Nine year later, Hex roams across the country, seeking out only the highest risk and highest paying bounties. If you're wanted by someone and they want you bad enough, Jonah Hex will find you.

Character Notes
Nothing much on character notes. Pretty much Hex will travel around the country, doing bounty hunting work on both sides of the law. I do want to incorporate several of the DC Western characters like Bat Lash and Scalphunter into the modern day.

Powers & Abilities
No powers, but Hex is an expert tracker and hunter, as well as an excellent shot with guns.

How is this character different?

For starters, Hex is operating in the 21st century. The man is the same, just the background has changed around him. I want to tell a modern day western. I also want to try and bring in some of the other DC Western characters and do a new version of the classic Hex storyline featuring Turnbull.

What is your goal with this character?

Write modern day western/crime stories with Hex in the center of it all.

South Dakota

The Prairie Rose Indian Reservation. It's where the government sent the Sioux to die. That night was the first time I stepped foot on any rez since I left Black Cherry all those years ago. I told Belle a thousand times I don't do Indian work, especially skiptraces. Damn woman went ahead and told them I was coming. She said the money was worth it. Once a whore, always a whore.

I drove my pick-up down the road to the Prairie Rose Indian Casino. In the parking lot a bunch of teenagers tried their best to stare me down and look tough. One look at my face and they scattered, pissing their pants and running home to their mommas.

There were a lot of long stares once I entered the casino. Blackjack dealers eyed me and flinched before they quickly go back to their business. Half naked drink girls dressed as squaws walked by and quickly looked away shuddering. A young boy with an eyepatch gaped at me while he pushed a mop bucket down the hall. This was a casino in South Dakota, so they had to have seen their fair share of shady looking white trash, but nothing like me apparently.

"Who the fuck are you?" A big Indian with piercings in his nose and ears asked.

"Lookin' for Red Crow."

"What's your business, you ugly motherfucker?"

I scowled and sucked my teeth, before tilting my hat back. He was big, bigger than me by at least two inches and thirty pounds. He also had ten years youth on his side. All things considered he'd whoop my ass in a fair fight. But since when do I play fair?

"Nice earrings," said with a smirk. "Especially the ones on your right ear. When I was growin' up, I was told that only men of a certain...sexual persuasion, wore earrings in their right ear."

The big man started to walk towards me. My hands instinctively went to the brass knuckles in my right hip pocket. Like I said, I ain't one for fair fighting.

"Shunka, cut this shit out."

Shunka stopped in his tracks and turned. A large man with dark hair pulled back into a ponytail with a cigar in his hands stood at the entrance to an office, a large scowl on his face.

"Our friend here is the bounty hunter."

"That's right," I said. "Name's Jonah Hex."

"I'm Chief Lincoln Red Crow, welcome to Prairie Rose."

I looked at Shunka warily. "Thanks for the warm welcome."

"Shunka, search him for weapons. Then bring him back."

Shunka began to pat me down, pulling my .45 from the small of my back, the switchblade from my left pocket, the brass knuckles in my right pocket, the .38 on my left ankle, and the Bowie knife in my right boot.

"Looked like you had yourself a good time, Shunka," I said with a wink.

"Fuck you, white boy."

I followed Red Crow and Shunka back to his office. Lots of Indian artifacts, newspaper articles about the Wounded Knee standoff, some more articles about something called Dog Soldiers. I sat down across the desk from Red Crow and wait while he lit up another cigar.

"Shunka, go find Bad Horse. I need to see him. "

Shunka scurried off and closed the door behind him as he left. Red Crow took long, slow drags on his cigar and let the silence settle between us for nearly a minute before he spoke.

"The lady from Central City tells me you're the best tracker in the country."

"Belle'll say anything that gets her that finder's fee. I'm not one for boastin', but I'll say this much: Pay me to do a job, and it gets done. Simple as that."

"Good. I like simple."

Red Crow slid a piece of paper across his desk. It was a photo copy of a driver's license. A California license with a picture of a blonde man. The name on it said Bartholomew Alouysius Lash. Hell of a name, and that's coming from a man who had his momma name him Hex before she abandoned him.

"That motherfucker cheated me. Goddamn card counter cleaned me out and ran out of here with one of my best dancers. That was a week ago. I want you to bring both of them back and bring back the thirty grand he cheated me out of. You get half of whatever you recover."

A man once told me I had a talent when it came to reading people. He said that I could look into their soul and see what they were all about...but he was about three days into a meth binge and I had knocked out half of his teeth, so what the hell did he know?

My instincts aside, I knew right then that Red Crow is a real son of a bitch. I think anyone who spent any amount of time with him could tell that.

"Alright. Showed me where he was staying while he was here, and who knew him the best."

Red Crow was a piece of shit, and he turned out to be way more trouble than it was worth. But at the time his money was good. That's all that counts.

Aquaman- Agent of ATLANTIS. The underwater kingdom has been traded in for a top top secret paramilitary organization, standing for Agents who Target Land Aggressors And Neutralize with Intelligent Strageties, Aquaman as he is known, is their best agent.

Guy Gardner- the Lantern with attitude becomes the soul wielder of the Red Lantern Corps. What will he do with his anger? Become a hero, or a villain?

Bane: Year Zero- detailing the rise and the mysterious early years of the muscular madman's life.

Vandal Savage: Good Guy Extraordinaire- Nobody knows who he is, or where he came from, but what they do know is that is one man has waged a war on national poltical corruption, drugs, and poverty, and he is winning... that should be all that matters, right?

Doomsday The Creator- detailing the early years of the monster's life, before he was an nigh immortal killing machine. Before he fought Superman, did he feel happy, loved, nice? Did he have friends, or a family? Find out.

Identity:
Originally Charles Szasz, now Vic Sage (with alternate identity The Question – also known as “No-face”)

Origin and Backstory:
1986, a young child, two years of age was found outside of the inner city apartment of the Ditko family with a note pinned to his shirt that announces the child as Charles Szasz. Steve and Denise Ditko, unable to have children of their own, take the child in and do the right thing. They give him a mug of hot chocolate and a blanket and call child protective services.

Child protective services retrieve the boy, where he is then temporarily taken to one of many orphanages within Hub City. Times have been getting increasingly tough in Hub City and this tale is, tragically, not an uncommon one.

Paperwork is filed and filed and misfiled, the wheels of beauracracy spin. Saint Catherine’s Home became Saint Catherine’s Home became Saint Caterina’s, became Saint Callinica and Basilissa. Szasz became Zsasz, and other permutations. The Ditkos attempt to find the boy, but given the runaround by the system and misfiling of paperwork the young boy appears lost in the system.

All the while the young Charles Szasz exists in a hellhole. Molestation and abuse have become rife in these homes which take on both genuine orphans and “wayward” children alike. The paperwork crosses the desk of a withered attorney, the motivation for his role long since beaten out of him Charles Szasz is merely a name on a piece of paper. No attempt is put in to tracking his parentage or any who may have submitted requests to adopt him. Charles Szasz is rubber stamped as a ward of the state.

The young boy learned resilience. If nothing else Saint Catherine’s taught that. Only the tough survive, and Charlie learned that brutality was one of the few things predators respected. But it wasn’t just anger that burned within him. Charlie had an insatiable curiosity and drive to learn, this eagerness drove him to excel in academic pursuits and likely stemmed from the unanswerable question of his parentage. The combination of the two led to numerous attempt to escape; the logic being that life on the streets, completely unprotected against bad people was better than being locked in a building full of them. In 1997 he plotted a major attempt to escape – however his plan was not perfect – a single nun crossed his path, desperate for freedom the boy knocked the sister down with a single punch before jumping the gate.

Charles Szasz survived 4 days on the street before the 14 year old boy was apprehended by police after being caught stealing fruit from a grocers’.

The paperwork for the assault crosses the desk of a withered attorney, the motivation for his role in law long since beaten out of him, Charles Szasz is merely a name on a piece of paper. No attempt is put in to tracking his parentage or any who may have submitted requests to adopt him. Charles Szasz is rubber stamped by a judge as “ward of the state”.

Neither the judge nor the attorney would remember the name a month from then.

Now with this mark against his name, Charles Szasz has little hope of finding an adopted home. Things get a little better for him at Saint Catherine’s as he ages, combined with the talks of his escape leading to predators to generally seek weaker prey. He concentrates on academia as his way to get out, and receives a letter from HCU’s Law department after entering an extracurricular essay writing competition with a lengthy piece on social justice. He also files to receive his own records, in an effort to trace his own family. This leads to his discovery of the lazy handling of his own case, obvious even to the teenage Szasz, and further fuelling his interest in law.

The next few years went by fast. Charles Szasz completed his high schooling and eventually gained an academic scholarship to study law at Hub City University (having turned down a financial aid scholarship based on principle). He went on to become one of the five fastest people to pass the Bar in HCU history and split his time completing post-grad studies (having grown to be fine friends with Professor Aristotle Rodor, and sharing a firm belief in the importance of continually growing one’s own knowledge base) and fishing for cases at the Public Defenders Office.

In these early days, Charles took on a case for his friend Rodor as an ex-associate (Dr Arby Twain) attempted to frame him for a crime and steal his patents. With few resources at his disposal Charles acted as his own private investigator looking to dig up evidence to clear Rodor. Dr Twain confronted Szasz and the two fought in Twain’s highrise office. Attempting to kill Szasz, Twain detonated an explosive device which resulted in his own demise as the blast propelled him out the office window, whilst heavily injuring Szasz. Police stormed the building looking for the culprit, but fortunately Rodor had discovered Charles’ intentions and knowing the threat Twain posed, found him first.

Charles Szasz was badly wounded and with his life on the line Rodor made a snap-judgement decision; using a sample of the pseudoderm he kept handy, he patched up his wounds and preserved his identity by using some as a mask. He then carried him from the scene using a service elevator he still had the key for. With questions that Szasz could never have hoped to give a quality answer to, Charles Szasz would owe his life and career to the older man.

Over the next few years his passion and brilliance in the field saw him shine and he was poached by a moderate sized private firm, where his talent quickly bloomed as he rose to become leading partner of the firm Sage, Stevens, Sienkowicz and Associates which became a juggernaut in Hub City.

Unfortunately another side began to shine through in the lawyer now known as Vic Sage... Was this an avenue for the displaced anger of his years of abuse? Or perhaps a psychological need to protect the other side of justice system given physical form to assuage his own guilt?

A criminal defense attorney by day, vigilante seeking justice by night, who fights for the wrong, who fights for the right?

That is the Question...

Character Notes:
Setting - Hub City
Hub City is a swirling vortex of corruption that could be condemned any day now. It had an even heavier reliance on the automotive industry than Detroit and when that went belly-up Hub City’s hopes died. Only three types of people remain in Hub City. People who are too poor to be able to afford to leave, people who are too stubborn to leave and the parasites who feed on its rotting carcass.

Vic Sage is two of these things.

Hub City makes Gotham look like a high-end health retreat. Every day crime and corruption grows and more of its infrastructure collapses.

Supporting Characters:
Aristotle Rodor
A true renaissance man, after one tour of duty Rodor left the US Military (where he was a trained field medic) to work in the private sector on his own innovations. It was there that he created pseudoderm. Designed to be an alternative to bandages and stitches, pseudoderm was a form-fitting material that could seal open wounds. After some legal difficulty regarding the rights of the creation with one Arby Twain, Rodor stepped away from his own company and withdrew into finding personal betterment elsewhere. Rodor chose education, he worked towards several doctorates and decided the best way to positively impact the world was to instil ethics and education to the following generation. His credentials were more than enough to land him a position at Hub City University, where he would eventually be destined to teach philosophy and ethics to a young prodigy Charles Szasz as he sought his law degree.

Myra Fermin
Mayor elect. The woman with the least enviable position in Hub City. Holding the reins of the runaway carriage of a city that’s clearly headed for doom. Previous leaders have scavenged the city, embezzling and looting public coffers and making her job difficult to nigh impossible. Vic Sage took quickly cleared her of allegations, the result of a smear campaign leading up the the election, however the mayor sees him as part of the cause of the downfall of the city. Their relationship is rocky at best.

Izzy O’Toole
Detective in the Hub City police force. Rocky alliance with Sage’s Question/No-Face identity, loathes Vic Sage the lawyer.

Powers and Abilities:
No change from the original version, except his knowledge in the field of journalism is replaced by law. Vic dons a pseudoderm mask, held on by an adhesive spray (both creations of Aristotle Rodor) that also alters the colours of his hair and clothes when seeking justice as his alter ego.

Has great powers of deductive, abductive and inductive reasoning, which aid in creating alternate theories in building cases in criminal defence and also investigating as his enigmatic alter ego. Moves “remarkably well, for a well-dressed creep” as said by criminals who have met with the nocturnal No-face. Training by the finest martial artist in the DC Universe combined with a brutal streak gained from an early life of abuse has sculpted him into a fighter who is capable of fluid, efficient combat, but also can possess a barbaric streak.

How is this character different:
Putting him in the field of law seemed like a natural move to me, with his natural inclination towards “posing the right question”.

I like the aspect that he provides the criminal defence that he politically believes everyone is entitled to by day, whilst operating for the opposite side of the justice system by night. The two sides both often representing the best and worst of a Hub City that is circling the drain, as well as the battle for his own soul.

I think there’s a lot there.

What is your goal with this character:
To establish a complex version of this Vic Sage and Hub City, before hopefully being able to expand and interject him onto the greater Ultimate DC Universe.

Sample post:

I’ve got to be honest, I love this more than a little.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are here today to resolve a matter of grave injustice.”

Opening statements. Always a lot more leeway, even beyond the rules of the court which allow for a little more rhetoric and dramatic style in these moments, the prosecution will generally sit back because except in extreme cases they don’t like to be seen as bullying the defense.

“We will hear today how one man’s rights were infringed upon.”

Just me, a stage to speak and twelve jurors aching to hear our side of the story.

“You’ve already heard the prosecution’s side of the story, and whilst it’s true that my client may engage in questionable acts. He may have a job which you and I don’t approve of...”

They’ve already sat there listening to the prosecution bash and batter my guy for 4 straight days, throwing expert witnesses and evidence and crap at him whilst hearing nothing from us. I’ll be honest, it made my client more than a little nervous. Hell, twice he threatened me with physical harm (from a technical stand point) until I explained how it will strengthen our case.

“...but the fact that my client is, as the prosecution terms it “a pimp” does not mean that he is not entitled to the same inalienable rights that you and I have. It does not justify a different level of treatment or provide an exemption from due process.”

The truth is I chose to delay the defence’s opening statement until the defence part of the trial for just this reason. The prosecution had been throwing punches at my client for 4 days now, and with the weekend thrown in the jury had gone 6 days hearing nothing from the defence aside from the occasional objection. Now they were hankering for it, and with my case resting on the notion of bullying and improper arrest from the HCPD the prosecution now had to be wary of their decisions to object, to avoid sending a message that they were trying to bully my client even in trial. He’d held up fairly well in court, although he was clearly coming apart behind closed doors.

“In the next few days you will discover how my client was arrested WITHOUT being read his Miranda rights and was held in an unconstitutional fashion. These rights are ours as Americans, and it can be no less just to convict on these grounds than it would be to find anyone hear guilty of speeding without providing evidence of a reading. These rights exist to protect us all as citizens. Not merely those who hold an occupation that we approve of.”

I look across the 12 sets of eyes in the box, none flinching, all eagerly absorbed in everything I have to say and again I have to admit I love this. Pride. One of those things that can be seen as both sin and virtue, depending who you ask. My friend, Tot would probably say both. He’d probably quote his namesake and note that Aristotle referred to pride as “crown of the virtues”, before dropping the obvious reference to its place in the seven deadly sins. Lives in both worlds. Can’t say I don’t know how that feels...

“You’ll get an understanding of how the police didn’t feel it needed to inform my client of his Miranda rights. Following which, my client was held an interminable period of time in a cynical fashion whilst the police attempted to extract information to create a charge.”

Prosecution got my witness list as I’m expected to hand over in discovery. There’s a lot riding on them not identifying the pivotal witnesses and leaning on them. And unlike our firm they have the full power of the Hub City Police Department to try and do just that. That’s the problem with this city, sure, I often find myself defending criminals – as is their constitutional right – but in this city, there’s as many crooks in a uniform as there are out. In this system it’s a stacked deck, designed to draw convictions and not release the wrongly accused it’s why good lawyers like myself earn so much.

“No statement drawn from my client in such a fashion can be admissible in court. Meaning the evidence against Mr Weeks is flimsy at best, and possibly artificial at wo--”

“Objection!”

“Opening statements, Mr Golding, I’m going to allow it. Go on Mr Sage.”

I struggle to keep the smile from my face. The jury saw exactly what I wanted. The prosecution attempting to silence the defence and getting slapped down by the judge.

“--possibly artificial at worst.”

Here in lies the game. Knock the evidence out of the box. Whilst I believe it to be true that the game is stacked towards the prosecution, doesn’t mean a smart player can’t win. I still have one thing going for my side above all else. The prosecution must prove its case with admissible evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. Those beautiful three words. “A reasonable doubt.”

As always, it’s my job to preserve the question...
