Age of Exploration NRP?

How about a early modern fantasy NRP that is based around maritime societies colonizing a strange, bizarre world with pre-industrial technology? You won't have to be a maritime society, hell of so dared you could be the exotic empires and savages those maritime cultures will stumble upon. Why, you could even be a organization of sorts like a trading company or a bunch of filthy pirates pillaging the trade lanes!

In order to keep things interesting, this is going to be a fantasy RP in the sense that there are creatures traditionally have only existed in human imagination being let lose, advanced ancient civilizations lost to time and even some non-human races running around. But i'm putting the lid on magic since I find it too theme breaking and I recommend that the races all be humanoid since I fear that things like intelligent spiders would just be too confusing. Or too terrifying.

So who's interested?

I had an alternate history RP like this in mind. But I'm waiting to confirm the deaths of a few other RPs I'm in before moving. And it was decided it should be put somewhere other than here.

When you say alt. history, do you mean alt history in the sense of "What if france won the 7 years war" or something like Kugelstahl /Regicide/Myths and Muskets?

Since if it's the latter i'll drop this and just work with you on that setting provided that there's trading companies and very similar elements to what I described here like ancient civilizations lost to time, the existence of humanoid races that while related to humans are clearly different species and strange creatures in strange lands of great value.

The basic concept I devised between some history nerd friends and the PoW crew is a scenario where the Arab world is in a position to colonize the Americas.

This has created a general butterfly effect which reshaped who in Europe was able to sail West. In particular the Spanish naval threat to Britain was neutralized from the get go with a Iberian Caliphate too interested in competing with old rivals in North Africa (and a rather weak neo-Visigothic presence in Northern Iberia). The lack of active Spanish threats to Britain would leave them without the incentive to build a navy so they'll continue their same old song and dance with France or Spain, keeping those two firmly in the position of second or worst place.

Also locked out of Constantinople by the Turks, Venice needs to find a way to recoup their losses so they follow the Arabs to America, along with Genoa and the German Hanseatic League.

When the time comes it'll be explained in further detail because most of what provides for this goes to way, way back. It's on the shelf right now.

I would be interested in a more realistic approach, so the fantasy-elements - as subtle as they are - kind of put me off. However, assuming an OOC comes up soon I may give it a read and have second-thoughts.

The fantasy elements are more in the existence of creatures that you probably won't find on earth today.

For instance i'm likely going to allow sea monsters in some shape or form, mainly since all a sea monster really would be is a sea creature big enough or ravenous enough to see human ships as edible.

Race-wise i'm on the side of them having to be humanoid or just not present. Hell, I am not sure if I will even be fine with lizard or jaguar men despite saying "humanoid recommended".

For instance I'd be fine with giants, chimpmen, and really anything that could logically have had a common ancestor with humans within a few million years or less. Yet something like a lizard man which would work nice in a higher fantasy setting could break the suspense of disbelief because how could lizards have evolved intelligent bipeds at the same time monkeys did?

The fantasy is likely to low to justify such creatures existing in this setting.

On second-thought, it might would be interesting to include the folklore those people would have believed in.

It's like if we did a realistic Greek roleplay, but included their mythology in the process.

This RP's a early modern fantasy NRP that is low on the fantasy in that while there's no magical energies or forces there is exotic creatures and humanoid races. Think Create Your Own Country in some regards with a higher limit on the tech and more maritime action.

It seems there's a lot of confusion of the RP's premise likely due to saying age of discovery making people think I was talking of a alt history RP.

So we are not doing an alternate history of earth? alright, but, i still would like to play as a native civilization akin on a technological level to like, indigenenous Americans or Africans.
