I work at a Bible Summer School, which of course means working with lots of little kids. Aaaand the hat I usually wear has lots of nerdy pins/buttons on it filled with references to various fandoms and what-have-you. I wasn't thinking much about what the kids would think of this when I decided to wear it.

So today one of the kids asks me, "Why do you have Minecraft on your hat?"

And since I'm not into Minecraft and therefore don't have any pins of it, I was rather confused. I replied, "Did you say Minecraft?" (And admittedly I was kind of amazed the kid knew what Minecraft was, as well.)

And he says, "Yeah, right there." and points to it.

I really hate when people do this because, as much as it may surprise them, I cannot see my own forehead (adults do this rather often, too). So I took off my hat and said, "Which one?"

He points to the three pins depicting the Gen I overworld sprites of Red, Blue and Pikachu.

So then in my talking-to-little-kids voice, I said, "Ohhhh no no no, that's not Minecraft - that's Pokemon. Do you like Pokemon?"

And he says, "Yeah I like Pokemon!"

And I said, "I like Pokemon, too! This is old-school Pokemon, though."

And then he asks, "So it's Minecraft Pokemon?"

And that's when I realized that the kid just didn't get it, and I had an opportunity to completely blow his mind. "Oh no, you see, it's still not Minecraft at all. Just Pokemon. The game is so old - that's what the characters looked like on the screen back then! Lots of old video games were really blocky like that!"

And his eyes are starting to widen like he really can't believe that he's looking at Pokemon sprites. "How old are they?"

And I said, "The first ever Pokemon games came out all the way back in 1996!" And I said the year really slowly, partially for emphasis and partially so that he fully understood what I was saying.

And his jaw dropped and his eyes got so wide like 1996 was ancient history to him.

It was adorable.

I never considered the fact that kids these days wouldn't know about what old video games look like or why they look like that, and that they'd only see pixelation as a stylistic choice rather than a graphical limitation. All old video games must look like 2D Minecraft to them.

And what would you have said to a kid who mistook Gen I Pokemon for Minecraft?

I fear the day I have kids and they think the shit I loved growing up is intolerable because it's not rendered in 5790p at 800 frames per second and they can't tell that a character with fewer than 100,000 polygons is a human, let alone a character you can get emotionally attached to.

I still have my Gameboy. I'll probably give it to one of my kids before they're contaminated with this graphics wankfest of the present and beyond.

As for me, I just find the way that kids react to "old" (from their perspective) technology hilarious.

If I ever have kids, though, I'm totally educating them on this stuff and potentially even trusting them with a Gameboy (if I still have some working ones then) and they can be the envy of their friends, bringing in what they'd consider a museum piece to school and making all the other kids be like "wooooaaaah what is that?"

...Actually now that I think about it. Gameboys are technically museum pieces.

...There is so much potential to blow kids minds today with technology that's a mere 10-or-so years old.

I don't know, I got frustrated just reading that conversation until the very end when he understood it. I'd probably have given up and just said "yeah it's Minecraft".

I wouldn't worry about Gameboys not working 20 years down the road, I've read stories and seen pictures of one that was more or less melted in a mortar attack work flawlessly after the screen was replaced. I also think my GameCube will outlive me and the next 3 generations. Say what you will about Nintendo; they build stuff that makes military spec look like Walmart brand.

I want to do something similar, where my potential spermspawn grow up with everything videogame related that I did plus the new stuff. I'd like them to know of a simpler time where you don't have to buy DLC to escape the first level, preorder to get half the game's content, uploads their every move to Facebook, and games that aren't sequel numbered to the point it dwarves the Super Bowl.

In all seriousness though, I'm not planning on having any kids myself, but if my brother or my friends ever have any kids, I want to be their eccentric uncle that introduces them to all these cool things from days long past. Even stuff from years and decades beyond my time.

I'd imagine that growing up with the old and the new should make them more appreciative of it all as well.

Yeah, I'm also kind of iffy on the idea of having kids, but I would definitely fulfill this role rather well. Especially since I too tend to enjoy old technology that even I didn't grow up with.

"Oh, this? Why, this is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System! It's one of the best games ever made. Why don't you give it a try?"

That's cute.

I get sad these days when I meet kids (not even that much younger than me) who have never even heard of Star Wars.

And they say I'm the sheltered one.

See, I just don't know how it's possible for someone to not know what Star Wars is. Like, it's not even a parenting issue, because even if the kid's never seen the actual movies, Star Wars is still EVERYWHERE in media. There are Star Wars products, references and parodies EVERYWHERE YOU GO. If this kid has any access to TV or the internet (and all kids of this generation have an iPhone now so I'd expect them to have internet access) then they can't go very far without running into any Star Wars material.
