Imagine a world of fairy-like beings. They are about the same size as humans, if perhaps a bit smaller. On the back of each is a set of wings that vary in all different shapes and sizes. Some appear bat-like, others are feathered like a bird’s, and some are thin and laced with intricate patterns like a butterfly. These beings are immortal, incapable of death unless physically murdered. They spend their lives in endless mischief, terrorizing the human race with anything from simple pranks to violent attacks. It’s a good thing I made this all up, right?
But what if I told you they’re real.
These beings call themselves “The Shades” and they live the same world as us humans. They have metallic looking hair and eyes of any color you can imagine. Some even have tinted skin, tails, horns, and other unique features. Of course anyone could identify a Shade instantly because of these distinguishing traits. There’s just one catch: The Shades are invisible. They can’t be seen with the naked eye and they only appear as dark, blurry shadows if caught on camera. They can make themselves visible, however, by putting on a human façade, ridding themselves of their mystic appearances to look like common people.
Normally people can’t tell the difference between a Shade and another human. There are a select few who can see through the disguise though. This special ability is called The Sight. Sighted people can see the wings on Shades along with whatever other physical differences they may have, even if they are wearing their façades. The Sighted humans are extremely scarce in number and secretive about the fact that they can see The Shades, so much so, in fact, that most Shades believe they are a myth. People with the Sight believe that if The Shades discover their ability, they will kill them.
Despite being invisible to humans, Shades can sometimes become attached to the mortals. When this happens, they tend to stalk the humans they fall in love with, following after them whenever they can. Eventually, some Shades reveal themselves to the objects of their affections under their human façades. Sadly, the relationships can never last because the humans grow old while The Shades never age. This would obviously raise some questions from the human partner, which is why most Shades try to suppress their feelings instead.
While there are plenty of frivolous troubles among the more romantic Shades, there is ultimately a bigger, more dangerous problem for their race: the king. The Shade king rules with tyranny and fear, attacking and torturing any Shades he thinks are plotting against him. He doesn’t bother with “reasonable suspicion”, so any Shade that gets on his bad side is at risk of injury or even – in the worst cases – death.
The Shades may have many issues, but they still find time for fun between hiding from the king and wooing human lovers. Things might be bad, but they believe strongly in their own freedom and won’t let their problems interfere too drastically. What they don’t know is that there’s a vicious force lurking in the shadows that threatens the safety of both Shades and humans alike.

My CS
Name: Kiden
Human Alias: Kevin Navarro
Age: ~20 in appearance
Appearance: Kiden stands at a height of about 5'11", which is slightly above average for most male Shades. He is a bit on the lanky side, not very muscular. He has messy silver hair and light green eyes that are too bright to be human. His wings are covered with ebony feathers and stretch to a span of almost fifteen feet. He has a pale complexion, not so much that he looks unhealthy, just enough that he seems like he's in desperate need of a tan. Kiden also has two small, black horns on top of his head that poke through his hair just enough to be visible, and a set of fangs in his mouth. To any human who had the Sight, he would probably look like a demon.
Façade: Kiden's façade conceals his wings, horns, and fangs. He changes his hair color to black and dims the brightness of his green eyes to look more human. When among people, he prefers to wear jeans and an unbuttoned collared shirt over a t-shirt. He also can often be seen with a shark-tooth necklace dangling over his chest. Like nearly all Shades, he is very attractive with windswept hair, clear skin, and natural good looks.
Personality: Kiden, like most other Shades, lives a carefree lifestyle. He is sarcastic, witty, and loves to laugh. He is one of the leading Shades in the "pranking business", able to pull off most of the gags he sets up; but he's always careful not to take a joke too far. Kiden also has a soft spot for humans, one that he doesn't tell any other Shade about. He wishes that there was some way for the two races to get along, but how could that ever happen when one doesn't even know the other exists? He has heard about the Sighted humans in the past, but doesn't believe they really exist.
Bio: Kiden was famous among the Shades for his creative pranks on the humans. Whenever a Shade wanted to have some real fun, he or she would seek him out. All of the popularity made Kiden big-headed, which resulted in him upping the intensity of his practical jokes to the point that some humans ended up getting hurt. Of course to The Shades, this was all good and fun, so they only encouraged his reckless antics, and he only got worse from there.
However, this all changed when he met Amy.
It was 1965, and Kiden was arranging another gag for a group of his fans. He had broken the lock off of a gate, behind which a dog stood snarling at him. The plan here was to let go of the gate when a human jogger was passing by and get a good laugh watching the dog take off after him. Kiden looked to his fans, who were all sitting in trees on the other side of the street and waiting expectantly for the jogger. It didn't take long. The jogger rounded the corner, and Kiden pumped his black wings, pushing himself into the air while he held onto the gate with one hand. He hovered there until the human was just past the gate, then he let go. As expected, the dog burst out, barking and snapping savagely, and the jogger panicked. What the howling Shades weren't expecting was for a second human to come barreling out of the house and call out to her dog. The animal heard her, stopped short, and turned back. Kiden's fans were not amused. They had been hoping the dog would catch up to the jogger and at least bite his ankle. They all flew away. But not Kiden. He was about to follow after them when he got a good look at the girl's face. She was beautiful. She had long red locks and grass green eyes that reminded Kiden of his own: almost too bright to be human. He was instantly entranced by her.
For the next year, Kiden watched her. He sat in a low branch on the tree in her yard, looking through her living room window. She would always be by herself, which told him she wasn't attached to any other human. He decided to approach her. Pretending to be a lost traveler, Kiden put on his façade and knocked on her door. Of course he actually knew the area very well - it was one of his favorite places to pull pranks - so he had plenty of places in mind to take her. He managed to win her over after three days of taking her out with him. The only problem was her dog. Bone, as he was called, always snarled at him when he tried to enter her house.
Things were going well for Kiden. They dated for five months - never staying at Amy's house for the sake of his safety - until one day when Kiden's "fans" showed up again. They had no idea any of this was going on. A few blocks away, they had cut the cable on a bike that connected to the brake. The biker, unaware of the danger, took off down the street. He was headed towards Amy's house. She had been coming back from a morning jog. The bike hit her at a fast enough speed that she died before she reached the hospital.
Kiden was devastated. He spent the next couple of years in frequent bad moods and quit partaking in practical jokes. The other Shades forgot about his previous fame and began to avoid him. He knew he couldn't spend the rest of his immortal life mourning for a girl he had only known for less than two years though, and he eventually managed to get over her death. He went back to joining the other Shades in pranks - none too dangerous this time - and brought back some of his former popularity.
Other: Unlike most of The Shades, Kiden knows a little bit of hand-to-hand combat, which he studied in secret a couple decades ago to protect the ones he cares about.
