Imagine a world of fairy-like beings. They are about the same size as humans, if perhaps a bit smaller. On the back of each is a set of wings that vary in all different shapes and sizes. Some appear bat-like, others are feathered like a bird’s, and some are thin and laced with intricate patterns like a butterfly. These beings are immortal, incapable of death unless physically murdered. They spend their lives in endless mischief, terrorizing the human race with anything from simple pranks to violent attacks. It’s a good thing I made this all up, right?

But what if I told you they’re real.

These beings call themselves “The Shades” and they live the same world as us humans. They have metallic looking hair and eyes of any color you can imagine. Some even have tinted skin, tails, horns, and other unique features. Of course anyone could identify a Shade instantly because of these distinguishing traits. There’s just one catch: The Shades are invisible. They can’t be seen with the naked eye and they only appear as dark, blurry shadows if caught on camera. They can make themselves visible, however, by putting on a human façade, ridding themselves of their mystic appearances to look like common people.

Normally people can’t tell the difference between a Shade and another human. There are a select few who can see through the disguise though. This special ability is called The Sight. Sighted people can see the wings on Shades along with whatever other physical differences they may have, even if they are wearing their façades. The Sighted humans are extremely scarce in number and secretive about the fact that they can see The Shades, so much so, in fact, that most Shades believe they are a myth. People with the Sight believe that if The Shades discover their ability, they will kill them.

Despite being invisible to humans, Shades can sometimes become attached to the mortals. When this happens, they tend to stalk the humans they fall in love with, following after them whenever they can. Eventually, some Shades reveal themselves to the objects of their affections under their human façades. Sadly, the relationships can never last because the humans grow old while The Shades never age. This would obviously raise some questions from the human partner, which is why most Shades try to suppress their feelings instead.

While there are plenty of frivolous troubles among the more romantic Shades, there is ultimately a bigger, more dangerous problem for their race: the king. The Shade king rules with tyranny and fear, attacking and torturing any Shades he thinks are plotting against him. He doesn’t bother with “reasonable suspicion”, so any Shade that gets on his bad side is at risk of injury or even – in the worst cases – death.

The Shades may have many issues, but they still find time for fun between hiding from the king and wooing human lovers. Things might be bad, but they believe strongly in their own freedom and won’t let their problems interfere too drastically. What they don’t know is that there’s a vicious force lurking in the shadows that threatens the safety of both Shades and humans alike.

Name: Kiden

Human Alias: Kevin Navarro

Age: ~20 in appearance

Appearance: Kiden stands at a height of about 5'11", which is slightly above average for most male Shades. He is a bit on the lanky side, not very muscular. He has messy silver hair and light green eyes that are too bright to be human. His wings are covered with ebony feathers and stretch to a span of almost fifteen feet. He has a pale complexion, not so much that he looks unhealthy, just enough that he seems like he's in desperate need of a tan. Kiden also has two small, black horns on top of his head that poke through his hair just enough to be visible, and a set of fangs in his mouth. To any human who had the Sight, he would probably look like a demon.

Façade: Kiden's façade conceals his wings, horns, and fangs. He changes his hair color to black and dims the brightness of his green eyes to look more human. When among people, he prefers to wear jeans and an unbuttoned collared shirt over a t-shirt. He also can often be seen with a shark-tooth necklace dangling over his chest. Like nearly all Shades, he is very attractive with windswept hair, clear skin, and natural good looks.

Personality: Kiden, like most other Shades, lives a carefree lifestyle. He is sarcastic, witty, and loves to laugh. He is one of the leading Shades in the "pranking business", able to pull off most of the gags he sets up; but he's always careful not to take a joke too far. Kiden also has a soft spot for humans, one that he doesn't tell any other Shade about. He wishes that there was some way for the two races to get along, but how could that ever happen when one doesn't even know the other exists? He has heard about the Sighted humans in the past, but doesn't believe they really exist.

Bio: Kiden was famous among the Shades for his creative pranks on the humans. Whenever a Shade wanted to have some real fun, he or she would seek him out. All of the popularity made Kiden big-headed, which resulted in him upping the intensity of his practical jokes to the point that some humans ended up getting hurt. Of course to The Shades, this was all good and fun, so they only encouraged his reckless antics, and he only got worse from there.

However, this all changed when he met Amy.

It was 1965, and Kiden was arranging another gag for a group of his fans. He had broken the lock off of a gate, behind which a dog stood snarling at him. The plan here was to let go of the gate when a human jogger was passing by and get a good laugh watching the dog take off after him. Kiden looked to his fans, who were all sitting in trees on the other side of the street and waiting expectantly for the jogger. It didn't take long. The jogger rounded the corner, and Kiden pumped his black wings, pushing himself into the air while he held onto the gate with one hand. He hovered there until the human was just past the gate, then he let go. As expected, the dog burst out, barking and snapping savagely, and the jogger panicked. What the howling Shades weren't expecting was for a second human to come barreling out of the house and call out to her dog. The animal heard her, stopped short, and turned back. Kiden's fans were not amused. They had been hoping the dog would catch up to the jogger and at least bite his ankle. They all flew away. But not Kiden. He was about to follow after them when he got a good look at the girl's face. She was beautiful. She had long red locks and grass green eyes that reminded Kiden of his own: almost too bright to be human. He was instantly entranced by her.

For the next year, Kiden watched her. He sat in a low branch on the tree in her yard, looking through her living room window. She would always be by herself, which told him she wasn't attached to any other human. He decided to approach her. Pretending to be a lost traveler, Kiden put on his façade and knocked on her door. Of course he actually knew the area very well - it was one of his favorite places to pull pranks - so he had plenty of places in mind to take her. He managed to win her over after three days of taking her out with him. The only problem was her dog. Bone, as he was called, always snarled at him when he tried to enter her house.

Things were going well for Kiden. They dated for five months - never staying at Amy's house for the sake of his safety - until one day when Kiden's "fans" showed up again. They had no idea any of this was going on. A few blocks away, they had cut the cable on a bike that connected to the brake. The biker, unaware of the danger, took off down the street. He was headed towards Amy's house. She had been coming back from a morning jog. The bike hit her at a fast enough speed that she died before she reached the hospital.

Kiden was devastated. He spent the next couple of years in frequent bad moods and quit partaking in practical jokes. The other Shades forgot about his previous fame and began to avoid him. He knew he couldn't spend the rest of his immortal life mourning for a girl he had only known for less than two years though, and he eventually managed to get over her death. He went back to joining the other Shades in pranks - none too dangerous this time - and brought back some of his former popularity.

Other: Unlike most of The Shades, Kiden knows a little bit of hand-to-hand combat, which he studied in secret a couple decades ago to protect the ones he cares about.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Name: Bisera

Human Alias: Bridget Odile

Age: ~Late Teens in appearance.

Appearance: Her pearl white skin, has an inhumanly iridescent shine to it, and under moonlight has a slight glow. She has pale red markings around her eyes that fade into her cheeks, making her look eternally sleep deprived, or permanently bruised. Her hair is light silver, and she typically wears it up, with small braids pinned and hanging here or there. Her eyes are the color of faded lilac petals. Bisera is 5'5" and weights practically nothing, very thin in her true form; bony describes her body rather well. With her ribs, spine, wrist, collar, and ankle bones all visible. Her wings look as if there are made of sleek metal and glimmering gems.

Façade: Bisera's facade conceals her wings, strange skin, and markings. She changes her hair color to light blonde, her eyes to a pale blue, and her skin to a typical human peach tone. When mingling with the humans she typically wears, flowy dresses, made of lace, cotton, or chiffon, and is quite fond of pastels and light colors. Like most all Shades, she is attractive and has flawless skin.

Personality: Bisera is optimistic, strong willed, and a free-spirit. An old soul type, mature and innocent all at once. Extremely quirky with a serene disposition, and many eccentric qualities. She is also really intelligent and unusually perceptive, not that anyone can tell thought, most think she is loony or clueless. She appears afraid of nothing. Distant and dreamy; she sometimes drifts away from conversation she does not find interesting. She is not easily upset or agitated, even in stressful, or difficult circumstances. She is not gullible, and she has extremely good Judge of character, thought she is nonjudgmental and accepting of the others around her, unless they are outright evil to the ones she loves. She finds beauty and love in ordinary things. She is an adventurous, curious, whimsical woman.

Bio: Bisera was born to her mother a Shade woman named Tallis, who was the lover of a high born Shade man named Diavel. Tallis bore him four daughters and two sons over a span of about 3000 years, Bisera being the last born. Her father Diavel was killed under the kings command only a few months after she turned two years old; thus causing her mother, Tallis to became withdrawn and to go in and out of a severely dangerous mental state, which would end the lives of hundreds of human girls. Little Bisera was then taken to live with her older sisters, the twins Rozelle, and Pember.

Growing up was idyllic, being raised mainly by her nurturing sister Rozelle, and carefree sister Pember. They lived together in a small cottage in the middle of a great forest in Europe. Pember came and went as she pleased, bringing friends and fanfare along where ever she went. Bisera spent her days exploring the forests and pulling pranks on the humans in the far off village, blissfully ignorant as most youth are.

When she was eleven, her brother Lancifer came to visit for the first time, and with some harmless eavesdropping Bisera came to learn the truth about her mother and other Shade issues of the time. She found all the new knowledge and information to be wonderful, the world was much bigger then the little cottage in the forest. When she was thirteen she used her glamouring ability to appear before humans as a human, after she had heard rumors about two Shade Men doing as such. Gossip and information came to her via the coming and going entourage of her older sister Pember, and the yearly visit from her brother Vetis who always knew everything that was going on in the Shade world. Three months after she turned sixteen, people from the village came and burned the cottage down, fear and suspicion among the humans was becoming and epidemic in the area. Rozelle chose to head west towards were the Kings court was, and Bisera of course came with, though only a year later she set out on her own beginning her own travels at the age of seventeen, which was rather young for a shade.

When Bisera was twenty-two it was decided by Rozelle, Lancifer, Vetis, and many other Shades, that is was high time to do something about Tallis, who had been left to her own crazy mind, and killing spree for the last twenty years. And so Tallis was locked away for her own and others safety, all the murders pined on an insane human woman named Elizabeth Bathory.

259 years later her Sister Rozelle was killed by the shade man she had fallen in love with, for what reason no one ever figured out. Rozelle had basically been Bisera mother, so her death sent Bisera into a century long depression, to which she stay away from mostly everyone.

Bisera was an oddball even among the Shade kind; whimsy and bizarre, as many describe her. In her long lifetime she has met three humans with the sight. The First, was a young Bulgarian girl in 1455, her name was Ghena, who sadly died only nine years later from sweating sickness. The Second was a young french artist in 1829, who had secretly been following Shades around and drawing them, and surprisingly no Shade had noticed the human man following them around and staring at them from the shadows. Lastly, the latest human she had met who had the sight, was a young boy named Freddie, thought that was many years ago.

As for the past century she has been up and down the american west coast doing as she pleases.

Name: Dianus.
Human Alias: Diana Preston.
Age: 26.

Appearance: At five feet, ten inches tall, Dianus towers above the average human female. With pointed ears and features, she would appear elf-like if not for the tiny horns protruding along her hairline and the black scales along her cheekbones. Her long, wavy hair is a dark bronze colour, which seems to lighten in the sun. Her wings are feathered in the same colour-shifting bronze, with a wingspan of twelve feet. She has sharp canines, and her eyes are yellow, in contrast to her dark hair and wings. Her skin is a light brown, copper colour, peppered with dark scales and the odd horn. Dianus' body is all lean muscle; graceful but strong, and she moves in much the same way.

Façade:

Personality: Dianus is absolutely fascinated by everything human. From their wingless appearances to their inventions to their variety of cultures, she wants to know everything about it all. There are many ways in which she chooses to learn about humans, including (but not limited to) playing tricks, playing with their inventions, direct interaction and silent observation. She is patient and gentle in much of what she does, but her interest and almost affection for humans leads her to defend them when she must, often without thought of the trouble it may cause for both species.

Dianus isn't likely to think in much detail about anything that doesn't relate to her studies; there's little else that interests her quite as much as cultures and the way things work. If she can't understand something after a short while of studying it, or learn something quickly, she can become frustrated and even angry.

Bio: Having always happily shared what she has learned of humans, and her predictions for their development, Dianus is known in some circles as being the go-to for knowledge, or in the very least a source of a good laugh (at her expense). Her knowledge has only grown as the centuries passed – for a long time she merely observed and collected, only in the last few hundred years has she thought to insert herself more thoroughly into the human world – though her understanding needs a little more work.

Since her decision to interact more directly with humans, Dianus has slipped in and out of numerous lives. At first she relied heavily on what she knew of human behaviour to successfully pass as one, and soon she was soaring through it with ease. She masqueraded as all manner of things, each one revealing something new, and some so fun she repeated the process with multiple humans.

She had always heard rumours of Shades falling in love with humans – love was a highly peculiar thing, and though she had seen many different examples of it throughout time, it remained largely a mystery – but she never experienced the feelings other Shades described; only a fascination with the human creature and sometimes a platonic fondness for the individuals. Usually a solitary Shade, she has always wondered what it might be like to love a human, or to love at all, so she often finds herself following the most distinctive of their kind in the hopes that something might... spark. Still, she's quite happy to settle for knowing every minute detail of human life.

Other: May be edited and added to.
Name: Elijah Marshal.
Age: 20.

Appearance:

Occupation: Construction Worker.

Personality: Elijah is all about hard work, dedication, and making people happy. More than anything, he loves seeing people at their most comfortable and carefree, and strives to make it a more frequent experience for those he loves. Outwardly cheerful, he's serious about his commitments and promises, a result of being brought up with traditional values. He doesn't believe he's good at anything other than construction and social work, but he doesn't try new things often, so he's unlikely to know. Elijah may even be too comfortable in his cosy little life, and apprehensive at best of grand new ventures.

Bio: The Marshal family was large, but cosy; Elijah grew up with four siblings and close connections to his aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents on both sides. He was born directly into the middle. The Marshals were highly traditional and as such it threw them entirely off guard when their youngest child – a boy named Freddie – began to say he could see faeries and giant birds that no one else could.

They took the boy to doctors, child psychologists and the like, and the diagnosis was different each time (autism, attention-seeking, there was even an accusation of mistreatment). Elijah watched his little brother's classmates edge away from him, how even their older siblings all but disowned him as he grew older and continued to believe he could see fantastical creatures. Eventually, Freddie got angry when no one believed him, and took to violent outbursts, so their parents relented and sent Freddie to be cared by be specialists.

Most of Elijah's life, he spent worrying about Freddie. Even now, Elijah is unsure whether his brother is truly insane or if he was just misunderstood, but the experience pushed him to dedicate large amounts of his time to volunteer work with children. In addition to coaching a soccer team part-time, he raises funds for the care centre where his brother lives. He's even considering taking night classes to become a social worker.

Sighted: No.

Other: May be added to later.

Is it cool if Elijah's brother showed signs of being Sighted, but not Elijah himself? Elijah will of course never develop the Sight. I can change these details if necessary.

It's fine that Freddie can see the Shades. It might make it more interesting since the question of the existance of fairy-like beings has already been posed to Elijah

Is this slightly based off of the books by Melissa Marr? If so are the Shade/Fays allergic/sickened/weakened by Iron? No city living then?!

Well I was originally going to base this off of the myths of shadow people, but I read the first book in Marr's series recently and got a couple ideas from that.
Answering your question: No, they aren't weakened by iron. I just got the Shades' appearances and illusions from those books :) The rest comes from multiple difference resources. (I always over-research whatever I want to start an RP about... orz)

Emma, I like what you have so far but I need at least one more paragraph in the bio. You could describe an important event in Bisera's lifetime. I would imagine that there's something that would stick out to her in all her years of wandering around among humans.

Name: Alysia
Human Alias: Alissa Chang
Age: 22

Appearance: Alysia stands at a tiny 4’10. Her butterfly-like wings spread five feet behind her, colored a deep ocean blue. Her pale, sea green skin and baby blue eyes create a very oceanic color palette for her body. She wears her wavy platinum hair long, down to her waist, rarely styling it. Other those features, however, not much differentiates Alysia from a human. She has a thin, fragile frame, though she has a strength unexpected of her size.

Façade: Alysia prefers a facade inspired by her time in Asia. Her fair skin and single eyelid eyes are framed by black hair of the similar length to her actual appearance. However, unlike her real hair, Alysia is much more inclined to experiment with her facade hair, sometimes changing the length or styling. However, her clothing is not as important to her, often donning a simple pullover hoodie and jeans, though she does try to maintain the oceanic color palette her body has without her facade.

Personality: Alysia prefers a quieter life, leaving the attention and publicity of pranking to those more inclined to the spotlight. Rather, she enjoys the small indulgences to keep her happy; she has intense passions for food and music. Her passions often keep her in the company of humans, though humans are more likely to be attracted to Alysia than she is to them. While Alysia is fully capable of feeling attracted to others, she'd simply prefer not to - not that she always has a choice. Those that do manage to wedge themselves into Alysia's life see a much different side of her. Often with those she is close with, Alysia is still quiet and reserved, but much more playful and childlike.

Bio: Alysia hasn't always been a lonely, quiet soul. For most of her past that she can remember, she was actually a very outgoing individual. She enjoyed the social lifestyle and she enjoyed getting involved with humans, though her passions for food and music were the same. She spent most of her time around Europe, primarily indulging in Mediterranean culture and cuisine. For her, life was simple and good.

In the twentieth century, with the outbreak of the first World War, Alysia was harshly disillusioned with the reality of human behavior. The dramatic change tore apart everything Alysia believed about the humans. She backpacked throughout the Mediterranean throughout the early 30’s, hiding out in the Greek islands during World War II. The cruelty of the war followed by the shock of the discovery of the concentration camps only served to further disillusion Alysia. She chose to leave Europe completely in the late 40’s, choosing to wander through Asia. By the time of the Korean and Vietnamese Wars, Alysia was already a completely different person. For much of the 50’s and 60’s, she completely stopped talking.

She eventually moved to the United States during the late 70’s, and it was there that she found the spark that made her love life once again. In 1983, she met a 19 year old girl named Christine. Christine reminded Alysia of everything that she used to be: fun, outgoing, and sociable. The two quickly became close friends, moving in with each other only a year after they met. Soon enough, their relationship began, and Alysia found happiness once more. They had a happy relationship until Christine started to notice that Alysia - or Alissa, as she was known - hadn’t aged a day since they first met.

Then the questions began, followed by the wild accusations, then the conspiracy theories, finished off by Alysia dropping her facade in a panic. Her sudden disappearance sealed the deal for Christine. She stormed out of their apartment, leaving Alysia alone again.

Despite the heartbreak of Christine leaving, Alysia had learned to be happy again. Eventually she moved on, and though she tried to stay out of relationships, they happened anyway. Her maturation took a big step during her time with Christine, and Alysia keeps with her the memories of their relationship.

They do have parents and are born, but they only physically age up to about mid to late twenties. Then they just kind of ride that appearance for the rest of their lives

Name: Samantha Frost
Age: 19
Appearance: Samantha has a small, boyish figure, standing at 5'2". She has sky-blue eyes framed with dark lashes, dark eyebrows, and a small nose and mouth. Her hair is coal-black, hanging in loose waves to her shoulders, and her skin, which resists tanning, is pale with yellow undertones. She tends to wear black jeans and band teeshirts with converse, but is not opposed to wearing a dress from time to time. She has piercings in her left nostril, right eyebrow and belly button.
Occupation: Waitress, part-time freelance artist.
Personality: Samantha is bubbly and a little "zany". She loves to meet new people and talk to strangers, and has a passion for music. She can be a little emotional sometimes, over-identifying with characters in books, overreacting in negative situations, and, being the hopeless-romantic type, she tends to get lost in her daydreams.

Bio: Samantha's family moved to San Diego from England when she was five. Her father had had an affair and her parents had hoped that the relocation would save their marriage. It was Samantha who'd told her mother in secrecy about the "scary, pretty fairy" who often came to visit when she was away, and at first, her mother thought the visitor was just a making of the child's imagination. Samantha didn't understand the arguments that came shortly after that, but within months they had relocated to California. That was Samantha's first experience with the Sight.

Samantha settled well into school in America, made lots of new friends, and loved to play "fairies" with her schoolmates. When she was seven, she had a second experience with a Shade that put an end to her fantasies about "good fairies". It had been a hot California day when Samantha had been biking around the suburbs with her friends. The others had stopped at an ice-cream van and were eagerly queueing with handfuls of pocket money. Samantha had been distracted, however, by a young, handsome man with blazing copper hair and ruby-red wings, standing at the foot of a long driveway. She did a double take and found that her eyes had not deceived her, as he urged her closer. Gingerly, she dismounted her bike and walked closer to the man, at the feet of which she then noticed a box. She heard the yowling of kittens and moved forward to take a look. Half a dozen blind, mewling kittens squirmed in the box, climbing up the sides and over one another. The man with the wings looked at her with piercing red eyes, and asked her,
"Do you believe in magic?" Samantha did not reply, only eyeing him suspiciously. The man raised a hand. He clicked his fingers, and, as though he held a lighter there, a tiny flame appeared. It grew larger in his palm. He lowered his hand, down, towards the box, and it took light. The kittens screamed. Samantha screamed. She dropped her bike with a crash and ran, tears streaming, the screaming and the man's laughter ringing in her ears.

Depite prying questions from her friends, Samantha never told anyone what happened. Even at her age, she knew nobody would believe she saw a man with wings pulled fire out of thin air. She grew up, pretending to ignore those strange winged people she sometimes saw, never mentioning anything for fear of being labelled a liar or insane, and always trying to avoid their notice. In high school she became an avid fan of fantasy books and novels, looking for any sign that the things she had seen and experienced were not simply delusions, but to no avail. Eventually she began to grow out of her obsession, and found her passion for the arts. She sang in a band, she painted portraits, and she hid her sketchbooks full of drawings of fairies...

Her little sister Katherine was born when Samantha was fourteen. When she was sixteen, she fell in love with a boy named Eric, but the affair only lasted a few months before he got bored and moved on without her. She had a few boyfriends after that, but she never really felt much for them. They were mostly diversions. She left high school at seventeen and decided to defer her college application, but never ended up going, instead taking a job waitressing full time at a local café whilst persuing her art in her spare time. Over the next two years she developed her skill to a point where she could work part time at the café and paint commissions part time, joined a punk-rock cover band, and learned to drive. Life wasn't quiet, but there was no "big break", and Samantha feels dissatisfied knowing there must be more to life as a young woman in a big city. She is thinking of moving out of the family home into her own apartment soon.

Sighted?: Yes. Please don't make me write all that again ;_;
