Penny doesn't care if she noticed or not an that's the rub, her present actions are like Reconing unknown terrain. Any actions directed at her or not are applied to the situational data she's collecting

Penny sees authorities whether Adult or Peers as her enemies

She's ticked that she's still in a prison uniform even though she doesn't act it

I was thinking of having her really test her prison's limits by ignoring the class schedule and heading outside and climbing any trees or buildings
High ground would give her an over view of the grounds, wall's, fences, guard towers security cameras and anything else that can be seen

Actually in the Movie the Kooler King isn't the Focus, in fact the Escape Committee has to get him to hold off on attempts so the guards will relax while they plan the big one. The real action circles around the one they call Big X because he's the primary
He does escape and get caught on purpose so her can bring back information critical to the big escape
