The Premise

You are a member of Fata Morgana, a secret society for the greatest illusionists of the world. Far from being common street magicians, these people possess true power to manipulate the world around them. They convene every year, from all walks of life, to share their abilities and techniques, and to put on the greatest magic show in the world.

This year however, the performance goes horribly wrong, and only a few out of the many members emerge from the rubble. The others have vanished without a trace, and in a world were all they know is fabricated, they are left sure of only one thing - that this was sabotage.

While Fata Morgana has always toed the line of legality and morality, they have never used their powers to actively destroy. But, whoever annihilated their ranks is now wreaking havoc across the world with powers that rival, and sometimes exceed, their own. And, as if offering the remaining members of Fata Morgana a clue, they have left each of them a specific playing card with the word Chimera emblazoned across it.

Will the few members of Fata Morgana that are left take the bait, investigate Chimera, and seek vengeance against those who sought to destroy them, or will they abuse the freedom that comes of anarchy and pursue Chimera with the intent of joining forces? There is no easy answer, but as the world burns around them, they realize that time is running out for them to act.

The world you live in is riddled with grey areas and nothing is ever as it seems. Whichever path you choose, there is a chance for immense reward and crippling sacrifice. Just remember, as a illusionist whose very being is a cleverly constructed deception, the truth - and Chimera, will always find a way to rear its ugly head.

Please let me know if you're interested. I've participated in a number of RPGs but this is the first I'll manage on this site. If you have any tips for me do let me know! Thanks!

Toed the line of morality? Would it be acceptable to make a character who gained her powers from dealing with demons or something like that?

Speaking of power, how would the magic work in this rp? What would the limits be, and would there be any categories or branches of magic?

Thanks for letting me know you're interested! I haven't completely worked out the details but I'll try to answer your questions.

I sort of imagined the powers of the magicians to be based on the manipulation of reality. Each magician would have a specialty that is unique and complex, but I don't think there are any established branches of magic. Also, every power needs to have a weakness, and a significant one, that keeps the characters a bit more human.

As for how they've gained their powers, I'm sort of letting the writer be responsible for the backstory. I mean, at one point in their lives they discover magic within themselves in some way and have to figure out where to go from there. I think it would be interesting to explore the origin of their powers throughout the story as, though their powers are varied, they all seem to stem from the same place.

I want to keep the characters more on the human side than the god-like side. (Think Marvel vs. DC)

I hope I've answered your questions, but let me know if you have any suggestions.

Have you ever read the Dresden files? The magic from there is pretty interesting.

No I haven't! I guess I hadn't really thought through the mechanics of the magic in this scenario. I was kind of thinking of people who could breathe life into statues, create music that would control the minds of anyone who heard it...etc. But if you have any specific thoughts on what you think would be interesting I'd love to hear them! I definitely want to get more concrete laws regarding the magic laid out.

Well, here's a place you might one to start. It could take a while to look at everything, but I think some of these would work really well in an rp with magic that has rules. http://dresdenfiles.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Search?search=magic&fulltext=Search&ns0=1&ns14=1

I don't know about the Dresden Files, but I'm reminded of stuff like Clive Barker's writings and the old WoD Mage: the Ascension.

Okay, I see what you're saying about establishing rules. I think the original premise was that there isn't much of an established tradition regarding how they establish laws for magic given that it is a relatively recent phenomenon. That would be one of the issues that the characters struggle with. However, Fata Morgana could be attempting to create a framework for some laws, though it's difficult given the diversity of the powers. I do like the Seven Laws of Magic in the Dresden files, but I don't know if they've managed anything as sophisticated yet. However, these laws would put them in a decidedly benign camp which I can appreciate. So I will try to integrate some of these into their philosophy. Thanks for your collaboration on this and if you definitely think you're interested in having this RPG take off, let me know what you have in mind for a character.

Yeah also there's some other things I like about the magic like with promises. In that series, if you swear something on your magic then you have to do it, if not, you loose some magic, or at one point, if you do it enough, you could lose your magic altogether.
