Jae-Hwa grits her teeth together, trying to hide frustration as the studio manager calls her name out for the tenth time in a row. A strained smile spreads across her lips as she meets the man’s gaze in the control room. He looks more irked than she feels, which didn’t seem possible three hours ago. One of his hands is tangled in a mess of hair. Slumping to the side, her gaze travels to the left, checking on her group members’ conditions. They’ve been in the “live room” for several hours. The Voice coaches and managers thought it’d be a good idea to experiment with a few debut song suggestions. Initially, it seemed fun, but their lunch break already passed, and they’ve been cooped up in here for far too long. Aoi looks ready to climb the walls in an attempt to escape, and Isaac has become jittery.
Colorful bangles clash against each other as she brings a slender hand to her hip, ready to speak out. However, she stops herself at the last moment, knowing a brash comment isn’t going to get them a break any sooner. Her lips draw together in a fine line, “Can we have a moment to collect ourselves? I’m only getting more off pitch, and it’s messing with the whole group’s intonation. I think it’d be more beneficial if I were given a chance to work with my voice coach for a few minutes before returning. None of us are overly familiar with this song.”
The manager grumbles for a second before muting the control room. A lanky woman, with long black hair, bends over the console and whispers something to the manager before motioning to the group. Honey brown eyes watch her movements, waiting for the voice coach to come to their aid. Heo Chae, that’s the woman’s name, unmutes the control room, getting ready to speak.
Her purple eyes dance across the members’ faces before softening, “I think everyone has been pent up for too long. Take a dinner break; we’ll regroup in two hours. Jae-Hwa, come see me after you’re done so we can work on the vocals.”
Relief washes over the young vocalist. She presses a hand to her chest and sighs. Water sounds good about now, a raw throat is never helpful. She’ll have to bring a bottle into the room next time. Then again, had she thought about it, one of the assistants would have fetched drinks for everyone if they had asked for refreshments. Jae-Hwa reaches into her colorful, but highly structured hoodie pocket, and pulls out a pack of key-lime pie flavored gum.
A goofy smile spreads across her bright pink lips as she looks toward the other members, “Want a piece? It’ll help if your mouth is dry,” she sings.
Slipping a sliver into her mouth, she watches their reactions. They won’t have as many moments like this in a few weeks. The company is sending members from other states and areas to this location as additions. Nobody has told them how many trainees to expect. Well, she’s certain of one thing. Their dorm is going to get much livelier, and a little less spacious.
