LegateName: Lanius Inculta
Age: 28
Background: Lanius started life in the legion as a Vexillarius. It was his duty to carry the legion's banner at the head of the unit during an attack, thus inspiring the troops to fight on. The banner was often heavy and two-handed and could not be dropped for any reason other than his death, so he was often unarmed and at the head of the army throughout all kinds of dangerous and risky manouvres.
Some say his time as a Vexillarius made him fearless. Others say he never knew fear. Whatever the case, his was the only banner that returned to camp steeped in the blood of his foes.
During one calm night, during a campaign in Gaul, the peace was broken in the camp by a surprise raid. Surrounded, outnumbered and caught totally unaware, the Legate ordered a fighting retreat, despite the fact this was the most important foothold of the campaign.
Lanius did not retreat. Instead, he took the banner and rammed it into the ground, demanding the legionaires fight on for Rome. This was a direct flouncing of the Legate's orders and would have had him executed - had it not inspire the Legion to destroy the Gaul attackers.
The Legate wanted the flagbearer put to death for his disobedience, but the Centurions thought he should be rewarded. Rather than have him killed, the Centurions granted Lanius a silver phalera for his bravery in the face of danger. It was later discovered that the failure of the raid, and losses suffered, broke the back of the Gaul resistance and led to a glorious Roman victory.
The Legate later died of plauge, leaving Lanius' Centurion to take over, promoting the Vexillarius to his old rank. He performed well in his new role, claiming victories over Gauls, Carthaganians and Illyrians alike. Soon, the new Legate stood down, finding himself 'incapable of leading so many men' and begged his Lanius to replace him. He happily accepted, permitting his ex-commander to resume his old role as Centurion.
