We wouldn't have, no matter what you guys wrote, I would have blagged something in that turned a God-modded victory into defeat.

Wasn't that my point?

Anyways, I have Gn. Fabius Pictor's speech up in the IC.

I was able to whip something up quickly and post it, just to keep from getting into a lull.

Yeah, I was just reaffirming what you said.

Anyway, good work everyone, I'm glad to see you're all bright enough to have grabbed the concept of the debate.

I've also noticed you're all capable writers, which is awesome.

I'm thinking of insta-wiping those generals who do not take part in the debate, as I'm going to assume that they've gone AWOL. Sound good?

Also, to keep things ordered, do you guys think it would be a good move for me to create a separate Senate thread, possibly in the Casual RP area, for the sole purpose of giving the players' somewhere to discuss things IC? You know, if two generals wanted to go about some political back handing, or call for an Assembly etc, then they could do it there?

I'm only proposing the above because I feel that maybe things will start to get confusing, with the variety of input this RP desires. What do you all think of the situation? Are we okay as we are?

And last but not least, I see that I've missed someone who wanted to join the RP (think they said their app was on page 4?), I'll get looking into that right away.
The outcome of the Assembly will affect things by the way, especially the Roman army and the way it functions. If you guys can't reach an agreement on anything, then do not worry, as I'll just pick the most reasonable sounding arguments and have the Senate vote for those. I know it's a bit clumsy, that I have all the power right now, but hopefully with a Player Consul in place, I can get down from my GM throne and join the action myself.

Legio II Victrix

Accepted and added, though Legio II is a Consular legion by default, so I've put yours as VII.

I'll see if I can get my head around the senatorial side of things, working on a post now.. Might be an hour or two though... Politics, eh?

There are issues listed in my last IC post, just have your character voice his opinions on them - or lend support to existing opinions.

I was going to have Cn. Pictor call out M Cossus for basically insinuating that the latter was a homo novus, but then I just realized that I used an anachronistic address that was popular in the early imperial period, but not in the republic. Whatever...

Fabi is the vocative of Fabius, as Brute is the vocative of Brutus in "Et tu, Brute?"

After some Sherlocking, I see your legion isn't in the accepted list. I'm guessing you missed the role call I did when I came back after my three day break. That or I just plain missed it, though in my mind I thought I'd already added it.

No worries, I'll get it up, and move the other legio to the next available number.

Yeah no you was, I remember now. But I think when I came back from my little break, the RP hadn't been active for 48 hours so I did a role call. I added/removed players depending on their response, and probably assumed you weren't coming back. Then forgot about it.

All sorted now.

Unless I am mistaken, you're supposed to call Patricians by their cognomen (or praenomen + cognomen. nomen or praenomen + nomen are resevered for addressing homo novus.

http://www.novaroma.org/nr/Using_Roman_names
w.vroma.org/~bmcmanus/roman_names.html
http://homepage.usask.ca/~jrp638/CourseNotes/RomanName.html <- This states that is should be Praenomen + Nomen, since the cognomen was "not officially used until around the time of Sulla". However, I disagree on his example for two reasons. First, Cicero is a Homo Novus and therefore (according to the first link) would be called M. Tullius. Furthermore, I don't know why he used Catullus as his example for the support of Praenomen + Nomen. He is after Sulla (Catullus was born around Sulla's rule, but he wrote after it).

I would like to point towards Chapter 5 of Sallust's The Catilinarian Conspiracy: "L. Catilina, nobili genere natus, fuit magna vi et animi et corporis, sed ingenio malo pravoque."

praenomen + cognomen

Nice post Dedonus, but um...

Marcus Atilius Marci f. Marci n. Regulus?

Was this a real person of the time (found one slighty familiar, died about 30 years prior to the RP)? Or have you Latin'd the feck out of someone's name? Either way I'm confused.

It's a real person. It's Marcus Atilius Regulus, son of Marcus, grandson of Marcus. In 217, he was the consul suffectus and in 227 he was an actual consul. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Atilius_Regulus_(consul_227_BC)

I was being super formal.

praenomen: Marcus
nomen: Atilius (he belongs to gens Atilia, the Atilii in plural)
patronymicus: Marci f. (son of Marcus)
grandparent: Marci n. (grandson of Marcus)
cognomen: Regulus(family of the Reguli)

Yeah, all I kept finding was the guy who got captured by Carthage in the first Punic War. Rolled down a barrel filled with spikes, some of the accounts say, which for some reason I found humorous. I'm guessing that's either the father, or the grand father of the guy you're referring to?

Having quickly wiki'd it, I see it's the son. Bit of a grisly yet honourable end at Cannae.

Well, it all checks out. I've got no problem with you show casing your passion in Roman history, but please keep in mind some of us (including myself) are only at a casual level. Though truth be told I've learned SO much since this RP started. So yeah, baby words might be a wiser way to go sometimes, if it's dealing with something we all need to understand.

I hope that doesn't sound like a telling off, because it's not.

Anyway, how do you guys want to conclude the meeting? Should I auto-end it tomorrow? Or do you want to let me know when it's over? I'm not bothered either way.

I don't think we have come to a solid conclusion yet.

Edit: Also, this RP cannot end until Hannibal escapes our armies by sending a pack of oxen with either torches tied to their horns or their horns set aflame. Funniest thing ever from Livy (i.e. one Roman historian who recorded the 2nd Punic War).
