INTEREST CHECK THREAD

The kingdom of Altranor has fallen, her cities burn and her people are being put to the sword - well, apart from the vast majority, who honestly could not care less who they pay taxes to. There was some grumbling about soldiers trampling their crops, but such is war. Most of the cities are actually fairly intact as well, since the few that had the means to put up any kind of defence were mostly taken out by poisoned water supplies and rotting corpses being flung over the walls via catapult. Not even the corpses of slain attackers, oh no - opposing necromancers simply marched the corpses in from nearby graveyards, infected them with a variety of ingenious plagues and chucked them right into town. Certainly, the Altranorian priests and healers - the few that had not been called off to war - were able to stave off the first couple of waves, but there are far more corpses than priests in the world. So, as the world turns, the life of the common man goes on, one lord replaces another, and the two things that remain constant are death and taxes.

Now, don't think that makes the whole thing any less tragic - for anyone. Even if you don't care about the raping and the pillaging, the destruction of ancient castles, the burning libraries and the pitched battles that killed thousands, you had a personal stake in all of this. King Erasmus the Indomitable, ruler of the greatest realm in all of the Fanged Isles, is dead - your liege lord and personal friend, thrown off the highest tower of his own castle to a humiliating death, his neck broken as he crashed through a pigsty. The banner of the Yellow Raven, king Bernard of Ghant, flies high above castle Altranor, and his soldiers are celebrating their victory in Erasmus' wine cellar. Your king and his family is dead, your realm is no more, and all the status and prestige you worked a lifetime to attain is gone forever. You, the last remnants of the royal court, may still be alive, but it's only a matter of time before they find you. For all your power, you generals, court wizards and spymasters, cannot hope to defeat them all - at least not here, at least not now. There is nothing left but to flee and seek retribution. Your enemy has won the war, and he believes himself secure, but there will be a terrible reckoning.

Bernard of Ghant was not even present at the killing, or even at the battle, it seems. You know this, because you are standing right there in the aftermath, watching from wherever you've concealed yourself as the pigs sniff at the cooling corpse of your monarch. Sounds of distant fighting tell you that you still are not alone in the castle, and though you know you can't save every yeoman, perhaps you can find some allies in your quest for vengeance.

Whaddup, prospective role players. I'm an old fart who's been role playing since the early 2000s and joined the role player guild back in late 2007 (or early 2008, I can't remember), sort of just stopped playing forum games for a couple of years, and then came back to the great RPGuild crash of last year (or was it early this year?). Now I've decided to try again, and hopefully make a couple of friends along the way. This game, I hope, is going to be the fantasy version of a road trip slaughterhouse movie, a darkly humourous romp through fairy tale land, all about the thirst for vengeance and the gratification of crushing a man's skull with your bare hands. The game is NOT first come, first served, and I expect each one of you whipper-snappers to think about party chemistry when you make your characters. This story isn't about any one of you, it's about all of you, you know the drill.

Setting & Background:
The Fanged Isles is a massive archipelago of vast, verdant islands surrounded by jagged cliffs and insidious reefs. The environments found there range from snow-covered mountains, to plains and forests, and even a handful of tropical swamps.cliffs and insidious reefs. Far from any mainland coast, the Fanged Isles are an ecosystem unto themselves, secluded and virtually unassailable by outside forces. It was settled many generations ago, by hardy pioneers who carved their kingdoms out of lands infested by ogres and worse. The isles now house no less than eight kingdoms, small in the grand scheme of things, but fierce, independent and strong. It is a land embroiled in constant conflict, as the monstrous natives of the islands battle for territory against the burgeoning kingdoms, whose lords war against one another even as they struggle to impose order on their own domains. Warlords, and monsters rule the unclaimed fringe lands of the islands, and pirate sloops fight royal navy cutters in channels no warship could navigate. Safe ports are few and far between among the perilous waters between the Fanged Isles, and only a few foolhardy captains dare challenge the surrounding Sea of Fangs, where sea monsters outnumber friendly ships five to one.

King Erasmus the Sixth of Altranor, the largest, most stable kingdom in all the realm, had spent his entire life struggling to lay the foundation for an end to the relentless warfare of the Islands. Through a lifelong war on monsters and the lawless, Erasmus had seen his realm flourish and grow as it edged out warlords and monsters and put counts and barons in their place. A policy of peacemaking and concessions toward the other nations and swift punishment to secessionists, along with Erasmus' golden tongue and expert statesmanship, had secured him a realm greater than any other among the Islands. His children would follow in his footsteps, exterminate those who would not be brought to heel, and finally unite the Fanged Islands as a single realm, and a major world power.

Unfortunately, success like that could not possibly stand. Greedy eyes had been set on Altranor for decades, but when the invaders finally came, no one could have foreseen the speed with which the kingdom was toppled. Wreathed in powerful and expensive magic, three entire armies marched straight out of the midwinter blizzards, trampling the unprepared defenders in a furious blitz. With desperate warlords battering against its defences from all directions, Altranor could not muster up enough soldiers to stem the tide, and the banners of the Yellow Raven Bernard of Ghant, his cousin August the Green Crow of Thandonia, and Queen Evangeline of Soven soon flew from castles and fortresses all across the land. Three bitter enemies that had come together to split Erasmus' realm between them, their pent-up greed and aggression saw the might of Altranor shattered before anyone knew what happened. With the other two protecting his flanks, the Yellow Raven's army cut a swathe straight through to the capital, butchered their way past castle Antranor's defences, and tossed king Erasmus off his own highest tower. The kingdom may not know it yet, but the invaders have won. This is where our story begins.

This section is reserved for information about the Fanged Islands themselves. I will be filling this out as information is discovered in-game or stated by the players, as part of the game is exploring and building the setting. So far, I'm only tossing in a few names to hint at my ideas for the various kingdoms, and hopefully pique people's interest.

Character Creation Guidelines:

Character Sheet, feel free to make additions if it seems necessary:

Feel free to add to and define parts of the setting, large or small - for accepted characters, the rest of the Fanged Isles will be designed around your additions - but try to avoid sweeping statements that limit the entire world. If your background includes the words "the world's only" or "the best in the world at", that's probably taking it too far. The Fanged Islands are big, and the world is bigger still. If you want to be the chess champion at court, that's fine, but avoid stuff like "the strongest mortal in all the realm" in a setting where there might be giants. Unless you're playing a giant. But even then.

Additionally, avoid giving too many traits to the king. He was left vague on purpose, so that every character could have their own reason to be loyal, without any of them ever being confirmed or denied. In general, it's better if you describe something in terms of your character's views, popular opinion and so forth. Makes it less likely for backgrounds to clash - I'm still gonna go with the characters I feel are best-written, but it makes for less jigging.

Last, but not least, ask questions! Communication is the key to a good, lasting campaign, whether you're playing pen & paper or play by post.

Kudos to everyone who noticed I wanted your usernames on your hiders. I guess I know who was paying attention. ;P

Any last minute sheets I will gather up in this post, and the final selection will naturally be stuck in the OOC opener so no one needs to dig for them later. In the meantime, I will begin to seriously decide which players are gonna be playing.

Just did a final edit on my CS. Barring any major acts of God, nothing will be changing from this point on. In fact, nothing major has been added or removed. I mostly tinkered with some sentence structure and wording stuff.

Addition to Roderick's backstory to cover the point immediately before the start of the story.

Since I suppose the interest part is done, I'll just post here. Totally wasn't stalking the threads... Nopenopenope.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling too great, Maxwell. Hopefully those painkillers do the trick, and do not run out, at all. Because it sucks to run out of painkillers before you run out of pain. No rush if you need to just leave off for a bit, seriously, I'm sure we all know what it feels like to be out of sorts. We can wait.

Also, whoohooo! I am so excited! This is, I believe, going to be great. I really do hope so. It has certainly had a promising start. And I agree with you on Sir being weak. It's kinda funny to see a six foot beast that way, but he probably is the weakest of the bunch. If you think he needs additions, we can talk about that, or he might just wind up being the weak link, or dying... That's life. Especially when life consists of a large force invading your home with powerful magic and lots of soldiers.

Umm, now, I was wondering, for the sake of keeping intersecting histories clear, do I have the numbers right here for how many years individual characters have been at the Court? Some of them seemed like they might have been involved to a lesser extent early on, so I added brackets, but I think I got the timeline sort of right. Maybe..

Roderick - 20 (30)
Taula - 20
Lin’Lise – 19
Nykerius – 17
Sir - 11
Riven – 7 (25)

@ Maxwell: First, let me get this out of the way. HELLS...YEAH! Thank you, Maxwell, for this opportunity and I'm incredibly excited to get underway. Also, after taking a gander at your post in the 'Interest Check,' I completely understand and agree. Riven's poisons can probably inconvenience lesser baddies, but when we get to the really tough enemies this won't be the case. Besides, it's not like she knows how to brew something that can kill a man in five seconds or anything ridiculous like that. She's an apprentice-level chymist at best and can make some useful concoctions, though her options are limited. Above all else, Riven Koralia is an experienced fighter who focuses on speed and stealth, and I intend to play her as such.

@ Nemaisare: Hmmm...depends on what you mean by "at the court." Riven's mother, Galene, insisted on bringing her daughter to Castle Altranor whenever she could. It's only logical to have the girl become familiar with the people and layout of her future workplace. While most of Riven's training was conducted in the Iron Keep, I'd say Riven has been around the men and women of Erasmus the Sixth's court intermittently for at least 25 or 26 years. Taula has witnessed the four-year old Riven having a temper tantrum when she was told she couldn't sit on the king's throne. 25 years seems about right to me. Riven became a more permanent fixture in the royal court once her mother passed away, which was seven years prior to the start of this RP.

That answer is perfect, thanks Lexicon. I meant it in both ways, for permanent and intermittent visits. I figured it'd be useful to everyone to have a set timeline to work off of without having to read through the bios(again) for the references. I mean, none of them are overly hard to find, but it's always handy to have a cheat sheet. And just make sure everyone's on the same page.

And, speaking of pages... Considering Riven and Sir have a roughly similar role in court, albeit Sir's is much simplified, how d'you think they've gotten on in the past? Sir would have been there during her mother's time, but he would have been introduced as a secondary measure, maybe for security purposes when the Royal Protectors leave the castle, since they can't be there all the time. I'm just wondering if maybe Riven, or Galene, might have thought him unnecessary or frivolous or appreciated having a little extra security? Or if she doesn't think of him as anything more than a really big dog? Her reaction to him would temper his reaction to her, as I think the only thing he'd consider interesting about her beyond that she stayed near Erasmus a lot was the chymistry smell about her.

@Maxwell. I am extremely pleased and grateful that I was selected. I'm definitely looking forward to getting started as well. : ) As for the things you pointed out, they are not issues, I figured that about the magic, and as for the sword avoiding casting magic directly at Mriswring is one of the ways it has always been countered. :)

@Nemaisare- Lin'Lise has been a constant presence, for 19 years. Ever since she was dropped off at the age 14 by the delegation of Lorenvolk from Vyrndar. Which is something that people would remember having seen. On that note though, could I ask what all the characters think of her? I'm curious.

@ Maxwell; Thanks for the opportunity, glad to be able to take part in such an awesome RP. I'll keep in mind what we talked about. I second Nemiasare; don't fret too much is you want to take some time off before we get started.

@ Nemiasare: Similar point to Lexicon's; Roderick's been living at the castle for 30 years, but he'd have only really become a fixture and figure of the court when he took on the role of Sage some 20 years prior to the start of the RP. The first few years were less "there goes a great and powerful warlock", and more "someone get that kid of that tree... again".

I can see a young Roderick having some interesting interactions with whichever characters were around at the time.

@Raptorman: While, we've already managed a bit of talk about Sir and Lin'Lise, I suppose I never really mentioned much beyond a few vague points. Sir would probably see Lin'Lise as a figure of authority, but more importantly, her appearance would make her something curious and closer to present, she'd be a mother, a very important role in his eyes, as well as someone who knows just where he likes to be scratched. During the first few years, he probably would have treated her as an older sibling. Not necessarily someone with a greater authority than him, but definitely someone who has more experience. But after Vel'Lis was born, he'd have treated her with much greater deference and a calmer attitude altogether.

@Chromane: Roderick + tree = climbing, new fact learned lol I see your point there. He would be rather less impressive whilst being dragged out of a tree as a youngster.

So this time at everyone, what do you characters think of Lin'Lise and what sort of relations do you want to have had?

@Nemaisare: Taula gets along better with animals than people, owed mostly to the fact she doesn't treat them like pets. Being an Ormrammr demands a certain respect for the natural world from her else she fail to 'shapestrong' during battle. Sir would have what amounts to a very uncomplicated relationship with Taula; time, intuition and his keen read on her 'uncultured' nature having worked in the beast's favor. It's less a friendship and more an understanding of each other's boundaries and position within the King's 'pack'; Taula's cowing presence and function as a hunter an easier idea for the animal to consume than the dubious utility of Erasmus' many serfs, vassals and courtiers. Here's some bite sized fluff:
*On rare occasions they've stalked game together, it wasn't often her work kept close enough to the capital for him to follow.
*She's never given Sir so much as a belly rub or table scrap but has always allowed the Anan its fair share of a kill.
*More than once they've been perfectly justified in biting one another.
*Taula's the sort of person that growls back
*Taula gets Riven the same thing each and every year for her nameday. A wheel of smoked cheese. Strangely, the breath of Castle Altranor’s dogs always reeks of smoked cheese whenever that date rolls around.
*Sir has learned from experience that eating the huntmaster's 'special' mushrooms is a bad idea. Dogs don't like to trip.

@Raptorman: In regards to Taula and Lin'Lise the two couldn't be further from friends, her gut just never lets her drop her guard around the woman. Polar opposites they'd just rub each other the wrong way in almost every interaction, I wouldn't be surprised if Taula reminded the Vyrndarian healer of all her father's most abrasive qualities. Estengauks nevertheless adhere to an eye for an eye mentality in all things and as such deliver onto friend and foe alike what each is owed; Lin'Lise, being a master of mending wounds and manipulating others, is sure to have capitalized on this.

@Chromane: She and Roderick have a wealth of common ground in everything from personalities and age to childhoods molded by the grim give and take of life in the wild. Taken with how readily he'll feel his way through a situation rather than think on it Taula considers him a more practical man than most and finds him just mysterious enough to be interesting. Unlike Nykerius and his incantations Estengauks such as herself consider sympathetic magic to be more 'natural' than its academic counterpart, though no less inglorious a tool.
