Joseph Blane set on the cold concrete floor of his assigned room, an empty soda can in front of him. He'd learned from his first few attempts that this should only be done on certain surfaces, or he risked damaging useful stuff. He held his hands beside the can and a blue glow started to form around him. A few seconds later a web of blue lines formed in each palm, and from the center of each palm jumped a pencil-thin beam of ions, striking the can on each side of its top. He kept the flow of ions going for several seconds before the can started to melt, then he moved his hands down the can, his corona diminishing slowly as he was losing the ability to replenish it as quickly as he was using it due to the fatigue of his efforts. After several more seconds all that was left of the can was a pile of molten aluminum. He stopped the flow of ions into it and it began to cool.

He looked at his watch. Fifteen seconds. That's a whole second better than last time. He was about to grab another one from the bed-side table where he kept them when he realized he had less than five minutes to be in the Admiral's office.

He stood and put on his jacket, letting his Corona fade. Once he was ready, he jogged down the hall and knocked on the Admiral's door. Once inside he sat in the chair the Admiral offered him and waited.

When the others arrived, the Admiral began. "I am Admiral Takahashi." said an older Japanese man in a voice that reminded Joseph of George Takei. "I have been given control of the second phase of your testing, as well as this project." He sat down it an elaborate chair in front of a wall full of medals and awards. "Because only one of you have any form of actual military training, you will be sent on a series of missions in which we will evaluate your performance and leadership skills. Every mission will have a different commanding officer, so that we can see which of you is the best at that position." He paused for a few seconds before continuing. "I demand two things out of everyone under my command, honor and loyalty. If you behave dishonorably, or endanger or betray your team, you will be immediately kicked from the team, and may face criminal charges. If none of you are kicked from the team, and you all perform well enough, your team will then move to Stage three, in which we test your ability to operate in a sustained mission, with our chosen leader as commanding officer."

He faced Coleman. "You will be in charge of the first mission." The Admiral handed the man a stack of file folders, each with a copy of the mission briefing to hand to the others. "There is a new street gang in New York City, calling itself the Dragons. They have the ability to manipulate fire, we believe through the same Meteora virus you possess. The local police are having trouble dealing with them, so we need the recruits to handle it. You are not, however, authorized to use lethal force except in self defense, so make sure you bring back prisoners, not bodies. Their leadership must be captured. Now, get your gear and ship out." The Admiral spun his chair around, and Joseph knew the meeting was over.

He got up and walked into the hall. When the others were outside as well, he looked at his temporary CO. "So, Sir, what's the plan?"

No one ever became a covert operative because they're "good at taking orders." That's what soldiers are for.

Incidentally, no one ever became a covert operative because they're "good at following the rules." Breaking the law is part of the job description. As are all forms of deception and general dishonesty. What you need to to accomplish the mission.

So when the Admiral asks us for "Honour" it's all I can do not to snicker at his face. That always seemed like a poor excuse to send men to their death.

When he ask for "Loyalty," I have to put my hand over my mouth. Here he is sending a group of untrained clowns on a mission as a way to "evaluate their performance," more than that, he appoints one of them CO for the mission... I don't care if they're the x-men, that's the very definition of a liability...

That's why I didn't join the navy.

Judging by the online presence, this might be a ploy to have the infected fighting each other while expending minimal resources hence the complete lack of even basic training... whatever this is, I have a bad feeling about it.

I stepped onto the hallway, and Jack Lee after me.

"And who are you?" I ask, trying to assess just how suicidal this assignment is.

Jack was really not listing to the Admirals speech and mission briefing. He was to bury trying to flip a coin and land on heads, he just couldn't seem to do it, he just got tails all the time. Though Jack joined this group for good and to stop evil, he really did not feel the whole super hero vibe of the whole thing. Using infected men and woman to do the job of police agitated Jack, and it was hard to agitate him.

Then came that part about the leader. Jack was no leader, he hated leading. He hated the idea of carrying the team on his back, he hated having to be responsible for a group of infected, untreated misfits. Jack continued to day dream, thinking of all the other things he could be doing right know.

It was not long after that when the meeting was ended and every one was let out to do what was supposed to be done. Jack walked out of the room behind another one of the agents. For some weird reason the man decided to start up a conversation with Jack.

"And who are you?" the man asked him.

"A infected man named Jack who now works for the government to get rid of all the scumbags they can't." Jack replies calmly.

Adam stayed at the back of the group throughout the briefing, standing with his arms crossed. Adam didn't know these men but perhaps he will do soon. Adam took on every word the general said and after the other four left the room Adam said "We won't let you down sir." before exiting the room himself. Two men were already conversing but Adam was interested in meeting the first leader before anything else who, as it turned out, was already preoccuppied. Adam kept to himself the whole time but listend to Coleman and the other man as he wanted to know the plan too. To be honest, Adam was looking foward to this, he could really test his powers but also, if he could hold them back at the same time. He knew that if he went too far he'd go into a blood frenzy and undermine every single human value he has, and if he did reach that point, could he come back?

Since there was still time before he had to be at the Admiral's office Danny was trying to improve his powers. He started by creating a small flame on all five fingers of his right hand. While these flames were barely strong enough to light a match he had recently gained some more control over them Rather than trying to make them bigger or burn hotter , he combined them all in a single flame in the palm of his hand. This was still the best he could do without an outside source of fire usually his lighter, and even this burned quite a lot of calories so he always carried several energy bars. Unfortunately there was no time to try and further improve his capabilities.

At first Danny couldn't believe he was chosen to lead this mission, however when the Admiral stated his suspicion about this gang having the same power as him the choice became more clear. After all from the recruits he had the most experience with Meteora Ignis. However he still had no illusions about how difficult this was going to be.

As soon as they were outside the office one of the other Infected asked about his plans. After thinking it over for a few seconds while checking the mission briefings he came up with the start of a plan. "First of all there is no need to call me Sir yet. After all this is just a test mission so Danny will do. As for my plan, I think some info couldn't hurt. So I want to start by asking the police and civilians in the Dragons' territory, and if possible capture at least one of their members for interrogation." That should also give me some time to think of what to do after that

"Ok, 'Danny'" Joseph said. Maybe it was just the fact that Danny didn't have any more experience at leading a team like this than he did, but he assumed things would be much more formal. "In that case, I'll go get my stuff and meet you in the garage. If that's all sir, er, Danny?" He turned around and walked to the elevator, taking it up to the level his room was on. Once he was in the room, he grabbed his issued pistol and a few clips of extra ammo, a Kevlar vest, his temporary badge, and a bag of peppermints. He grabbed a soda out of his mini-fridge and chugged it, along with a caffeine pill. Using his powers took a lot of energy. He had lost ten pounds since he got them and was eating more than four thousand calories per day. The caffeine would make his energy "regenerate" faster, and the sugar in the peppermints would give him more energy to burn.
When he was sure he had grabbed everything he'd need, he took the elevator down to the garage and found someone else standing there already. "Shotgun" he said. "So, what's your power?"

"Got it, name's Adam by the way," Adam said to Danny. After the other guy left to get his things Adam followed suit and walked down the corridor to his room. Adam looked around to see if he needed anything, scanning the desk, bed and wardrobe... nope. If he really wanted to test his powers then he must refuse to use any other offensive equipment, besides he has been proven that he is capable of using his powers effectively. However he was afraid he'd become too efficient one day and in turn, too deadly. Adam recalled meeting at the garage and made his way there without hesitation. When he got there it was empty until a voice sounded from behind him. "Shotgun," the man said. Adam turned around to face the new voice. "So what's your power?" The man who talked to Danny a moment ago asked. Adam offered his hand, "Meteora Animalia" he replied. "I'm half human, half... whatever has yellow eyes, claws and fangs." He added. "Basically I have animal traits, including speed and strength. Name's Adam by the way, yourself?" He asked.

"Right..." this one's full of pep... "Good luck with your 'too cool for school attitude'," I said.

I went over to the armoury. "I'm gonna need tasers, thermal vision googles, general surveilance equipment and I don't suppose you have fireproof clothing, do you? And a fireproof van... or cage... or an large strong aquarium," I asked the requisitions officer. "And a firetruck."

Like the others Danny went to his room to get his equipment, which in case consisted of several cans of aerosol to use as impromptu flamethrowers, a combat knife and finally some energy and chocolate bars. For a moment he considered taking his lighter along but decided against it, after al he would only be bringing along more fire for the Dragons to control which admittedly was also a risk of the "flamethrowers"; and if he ran out of the energy to create fire there probably would be enough of it during for him during any fights.
After he was done with that he didn't head straight for the garage, but first went the opposite direction to pick up a first aid box. He was the only member of the group with any medical training as little it was, after all and it never hurt to be prepared. "With any luck, me getting this was just a waste of time." Now that he had all the equipment he though necessary Danny headed straight to the garage. Unsurprisingly two of the Infected had already beaten him to it. "Well, at least I'm not last." He joked while putting the medical supplies into the trunk of the car.

Jack really did not wait for the man to respond, he really did not care about what he had to say, he just wanted to get on the battle field. Jack headed to the car lot, seeing no reason to have and arsenal of weapons when they were practically mutants. All he really needed was outside in the world already.

He was one of the first people to get to the lot, but people were already there. Some were talking, some were reading then selves for the battle. He assumed some had already called shotgun so he would have sit in the back. He opened the back doors to the truck and sat on on of the cold benches, and waited for the group to get the show on the road.

Ddam drummed on top of the truck as one of his colleagues stepped inside. "Let's rock and roll!" He stated while entering the truck. He looked at the man who was with him. "Name's Adam." He said offering a hand "And you?" He asked. In the back of his mind, there was an anticipation for the mission but he really wanted to be a part of capturing a Dragon member. That's where he felt his powers would be better allocated. He made a note to himself to ask Danny on the journey to New York while awaiting a response from the other guy.

"I'm Joseph," he said, "and as for my power." He stopped talking and a blue corona formed around him. A few seconds later blue streaks of energy began to form in the palms of his hand, jumping around at random. "They're positive ions. They can burn stuff or shock a person pretty badly."
When the conversation was over and the animal-man left to enter the truck, Joseph stayed by the door. As soon everyone had arrived, including the leader, Danny, who was carrying medical supplies, Joseph walked over to the passenger door and climbed in. "Peppermint?" he asked the people in the back through the window to the back of the vehicle. "I've got them in case I wear myself out with my powers." He put one of them in his mouth and held the bag up to the window.

Dan decided that in no way it would hurt to share info about his powers like the others were doing, especially since their enemies probably shared them. "As you know I was selected as leader because the Dragons most likely have the same virus as me,and in that case a crash course on Meteora Ignis might be useful. Basically this virus allows to control and or create fire.As with Joseph creating fire burns a lot of calories. If anyone wants to know feel free to ask, and I'll answer to the best of my knowledge." With that out of the way Danny entered the car and waited for the last member of the team knowing he would probably have to explain it to him as well.

Jack was daydreaming about throwing Manhole covers at gangsters faces when he was greeted by another agent. He held his hand out and introduced himself as Adam, instead of completely ignoring him he decided to be nice and introduce himself also. "Names Jack." He said in a gruff as he shook Adam's hand. "So what are you infected with." Jack said, trying to make conversation, although he would have rather thrown a Manhole Cover at another man face at that point in time.

"What are you infected with?" Jack asked Adam. "Meteora Animalia," he replied. "I'm half human, half animal, in simple terms." Adam said blinking his yellow eyes and showing his claw like nails. Before Adam had a chance to ask about Jack's power, he was interrupted by Joseph, the lightning man, who was offering mints to everyone. "No thanks. Sugar gets me way too hyper." Adam replied as he politely put out a flat hand. Danny, the current leader explained his power, fire, and how it was most likely the same as the Dragons. "I do have a question actually?" Adam began. "What's our priority? Interviewing the public or grabbing a Dragon?" He asked, Adam also mentioned to Dan about how he felt his skills would be best applied at interrogating a gang member, as politely and non-showboaty as he could.

"Yeah oddly enough my powers are probably the least suited for fighting the Dragons. I forgot to mention that as a bonus Ignis gives you some resistance to heat, about equal to that of the flames you can create." Danny replied to Adam's comment about him being useful in combat. "That said I think it would be best to focus on capturing at least one gang member, seeing as this will allow us to see each other in combat during a relatively easy fight."

"That sounds like a good plan." said Joseph, "We could use more intel, though I'm not exactly the military type. We'll need a strategy to take them down without being burnt. Danny could try to grab them, as he won't be hurt by their powers, or I could get in close and shock him unconscious." He popped another peppermint into his mouth. "I'm sure the rest of you could have a way to take them down too, but we've got to decide on one before we try for them or it will be chaos."

Adam contemplated the situation for a moment. "We only need one," he said. "I bet if I can sneak in, I can grab one, then you." He said pointing to Joseph, "could shock him and stun him, like a tazer." Adam suggested, getting in would be the easy part, he thought. Grabbing one without getting attacked, let alone dragging a Dragon outside would be the hard part. "If we did this that way, I could do with a couple of watchmen and we would have to find out where there hideout is.' Adam added. He looked around, he coulda sworn there was another guy at the meeting. "Hey, where's the other dude?" He asked openly.

While Danny didn't mind the help in the planning process,he now had to decide between at least two plans. After thinking it over he decided that Joseph's idea was the better of the two. "Sorry Adam, but I don't think it would be a good idea to make physical contact without at least some protection from fire, since creating fire is a lot easier if done close range like this." While so far Danny had only created fire in his hands he suspected he could do with every body part, and after focusing for about ten seconds managed to ignite a small flame atop his upper arm and quickly extinguished it before it would waste to much energy.
