1954: The impossible emerges from Tokyo Bay. Despite the best efforts of the fledgling Self Defense Forces, the massive creature that would come to be known as Godzilla destroyed a good portion of the city of Tokyo, killing hundreds immediately with thousands more left to die a slow and tortuous death from radiation poisoning. The economic damage to the Kanto region was incalculable, with the most positive estimates leaving a million homeless and out of work. While the sacrifice of Daisuke Serizawa apparently destroyed the monster, the world waited for its return with baited breath.
1984: For the first time in thirty years, Godzilla comes from the depths and lays waste to the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. Alarmingly, the creature is even larger and more powerful than before. The upgraded conventional arms of the Ground Self Defense Force are useless, and the ASDF fares little better with the advanced aircraft Super X . Though the creature is eventually sealed inside an active volcano, the damage has been done- Japan vows never to be caught off guard again, and a more hawkish mentality begins to take hold.
1984-1999: Godzilla somehow escapes from his volcanic tomb and makes several small raids throughout the Pacific, hitting Taiwan, the Philippines, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, China, New Zealand, Malaysia, and of course Japan over fifteen years. While these raids all occur in isolated places and the death toll from all combined attacks totals less than a hundred, the world takes the threat very seriously. Japan continues to remilitarize.
1999: For the first time, the world simultaneously receives First Contact and the confirmation of a second kaiju. Godzilla battles the extraterrestrial creature Orga in downtown Tokyo (this city just can't catch a break). Godzilla emerges victorious, and is allowed to peacefully return to the sea.
The year is now 2018.
The existence of kaiju and extraterrestrial life is now accepted scientific fact, though Godzilla and Orga are the only two officiailly confirmed to exist. Japan, as the country worst affected by this phenomenon, has gone to great lengths to counter kaiju. The military draws manpower from mandatory conscription, Article 9 has been all but revoked, and billions of yen have been poured into projects like the maser cannon and improved versions of the Super X.
Now, small but noticeable happenings are occurring throughout Japan. Boats disappear without a trace, flocks of birds fall dead from the skies, radio signals fail without explanation. Experts predict gloom and doom: something is going to happen, what exactly, no one knows.
Player characters are all going to have something to do with the coming disaster throughout Japan. Herein lies the kicker: what makes each of you special is your connection with a previously undiscovered kaiju. That's not to say you have an overt or public connection, though, it's more speculative or conspiratorial. Perhaps you're an anthropologist who has uncovered evidence of a gentle moth-like deity worshiped on Infant Island, or maybe you are a conspiracy theorist who knows of plans for a size-changing intelligent robot that were mothballed back in the the 70s. At any rate, when things get truly desperate, the JSDF is willing to support any crackpot who says they might be able to find a potentially friendly giant monster- that's where you come in. Eventually, you will be able to control your pet kaiju in a fight, though this will come later on.
At the moment we're limited to the Godzilla/ Toho canon for monsters, though I will consider expansion later on down the line.
