Whenever I want there to be a chance for PCs to die, I like having a system to semi-randomize it. So that they'll have defined skills and strengths and weaknesses, but there's a chance for failure. I was thinking of making an arena gladiator RP, and I wanted to pit player characters against both each other and other foes, but I don't want anyone arguing over who wins each match.

So I came up with an entirely dice-based (2 D6) RP format, and I think you could use a roll vs roll format where the roll influences how well the action the players attempt turns out. The way my format uses it is the die roll influences absolutely everything, with a 2 resulting in at least a crippling blow (but usually death) and a 12 resulting in the attempt going extremely well and even allowing a slight degree of godmodding (as long as it's fair godmodding). But you might not like that. I'd say depending on how you have your stats laid out, pit the player's attack vs. another player's defense stat and use the roll of the dice to add to the stats. So if a person has an Attack of 5 and they're attacking a person with a Defense of 8, both players would roll, adding the amount to their relevant stats. If the resulting attack is higher, they get the hit, but if the resulting defense is higher, either have the attack do less damage (roll a die and divide the Attack stat by the amount rolled?) or just not do damage at all, depending on how complicated you want it to get. Just a thought! I've never tried this model with real people before, but it sounds like it would work pretty smoothly as long as nobody cheats and everybody respects the dice. :)
