Actually, I don't. Many artillery pieces can reach 8000 feet like nothing. Which again raises the question of the military utility of airships. They can't go very fast, and they're really big targets. I want them to be useful, but can't figure out a role for them. Floating artillery platforms far away from the front?

SoBoerd, I figured they would be bomb platforms or giant flying artillery pieces that would support ground or naval operations. Also, an artillery piece will have a hard time shooting 8k straight up - anti-aircraft guns are very specialized things, and without specialized guns the ships could easily ascend high enough to not get smacked by AA.

Just waiting for everyone who's posted so far to actually finish their stuff mainly. I will say that my first IC post will generally be just a scene establisher for the whole thing and have little actual bearing on you people. You guys can start formulating IC posts now. All you really need to know is that a little over a year ago an explorer from the HKE (because of course it will be our GM's nation, they're special snowflakes :^) ) discovered that South Adara is just lousy with Elan and who knows what other precious resources thus kicking off the scramblerino. Some colonies may have already existed but things are now beginning in earnest.

Peace Keeper, I expect you could have a fair bit of technology. You could play Totally-Not-Rhodesia, and make my /k/rippled heart so god damn proud. Or you could play a spear-throwing tribal culture, or steppe nomads, or whatever you want.

Nexerus plays them. On the topic of Airships and Anti-air fire, my take on it is pretty much that by and large they are armored like the naval warships they emulate (though not to the same degree of course. an Elan Battleship, even a very large one, likely isn't quite above that of an armored cruiser on the sea in terms of armor) and so that means that Flak artillery is generally out of the question. What that would mean is that AA guns need to be accurate enough to actually hit them dead-on and powerful enough to punch through the ship's armor. Then also there comes the issue of a proper high angle carriage for the guns that is easy to deploy in the field. A moving target is hard enough to hit with artillery of the time, a moving target in the air raises its own host of concerns. Tl;DR: Airships can be countered by dedicated AA batteries, but that doesn't mean said batteries are an automatic death sentence.
