It has little to do with your opinion of the American education system and more to do with the hemispheres. Most countries on the northern half of the planet have similar yearly schedules as the U.S.

I just started my last spring semester of college. I have one class to take this summer and then 16 more credits this fall. Then I'm done and graduated.

I feel for you about that sleep schedule, though. I'm a heavy sleeper, so I had to start setting my alarm for 5:30 AM just to wake up in time to be ready for a 7:45 AM start. I really wish schools would reverse the schedules, make the elementary kids get there early and let the high schoolers start last.
