The town of Corentin sits on a ridge over looking a nearby river and small port. The ocean can just be seen on the horizon from the parapets over the market gate. The year is 603 AD, and the town is located in Bernicia. A good haven port, it often sees trans-sea traffic during the stormy months, the rest of the year most of the traffic flows with the river, bringing ores, lumber, wool and some grain from the highlands. Most days, A fisherman will bring his catch up river from the sea-shanty where the fishermen live. The town is surrounded by an earthen embankment 1.5 meters high topped with a 2 meter log palisade. Three gates broke the monotony of the palisade, the river gate, where the river was closest to the town, and the poorer people fetched their water and did their washing. The market gate, lead to the market held on the field downstream from the town and the river gate. Last but not least, was the Inland gate, this was the only gate that lead to a road. Kingdom traffic and some flocks came by this road. The town hosts multiple Inns, one of which is owned and run by a man named Tavish Ainsley.

Tavish was just welcoming the morning crowd at the Iron Scale, his inn, serving mostly porridge cooked this morning and milk bought from a local farmer who liked to come by chat a bit in the mornings, mostly because Tavish would buy his milk without trying to cheat him. Today's crew was small, though Tavish had been told to expect a couple of new ships coming up the river sometime this week.

"Hey Tavish. Wow things are really busy in here today. Oh wait, no, I meant to say that things are really busy at our inn today. Silly mistake." Scout was leaning in the open window with a mischievous grin on her face. The rival inn's were only a few yards apart and the blind girl enjoyed teasing the competition whenever she could. Life in a small town wasn't always the most exciting so she sought out entertainment in any form.

Her milk blue/gray eyes didn't focus on anyone in particular as she brushed a long strand of dark hair out of her face.

"We'll probably get most of the traveling merchants this week too because rumor has it the captain has a soft spot for young women. I know I can't see, but I suspect you're not quite what they have in mind, Tavish." She laughed with delight imagining the rough voice of the inn keeper coming from a buxom woman instead of the probably burly man. "You should sell us your Inn. I promise to take good care of it. I might even let the livestock stay here."

Scout laughed again as she smoothed out her pale blue dress and got ready to duck under the window ledge in case anything got thrown at her.

Hahaha, silly girl indeed! Since you can't see them yourself I'll tell you I have two young women who both have the uses of all their senses, if not all of their heads, in my employ, so it would seem that the merchants are twice as likely to come here than they are to go to the drafty barn your father calls an inn. The lads here will see that any travelers come by here for a good night at a reasonable price, I've no worries of you stealing my customers. Besides, if you were so busy, you wouldn't be hanging in my window like a hungry partridge.

He directed the his comment about his servers not having the use of their full heads at his servers with mock severity and one giggled while other merely rolled her eyes dramatically earning a few chuckles from the men finishing their breakfasts. Tavish, considered tossing his rag at Scout, but left the thought as just that, a thought. She was only teasing because she was bored and he knew it, so it wasn't worth encouraging her by tossing the rag. Instead he turned and, slinging the rag over his shoulder, opened the lid to the porridge and stirred the pot.

Then, he grinned and waved one his girls over, he whispered something in her ear and she giggled, ducking into the kitchen area. A moment later she came back with a tray of moldy sliced bread with butter scrapped over them. She made her way around the room, asking who wanted hot bread, which several of the men did, and she pretended to hand out slices to those who asked for it, before sliding over to the window and asking Scout if she wanted piece, setting the edge of the tray lightly against Scout's arm so she could grab the slice herself if she wanted too.

Some of the men watched quietly, others continued their conversations, the farmer began saying his goodbyes for the morning as he had chores to finish at the farm before lunch and Tavish heartily wished him a good and productive day, thanking him for bringing his milk by that morining.

"Two isn't always better than one, Tavish. I'm blind so I can't see how ugly he is." Scout said it like it was an obvious perk, but Tavish did have a point. Despite her constant bragging, Scout didn't actually have any suitors. Who wanted a blind woman when there were plenty of fully capable ones around. She had long since resigned to her future as a spinster, but that didn't mean she couldn't fake it in the meantime. Honestly it gave her more freedom anyways. Now she could do what she wanted without rammifications, and what she wanted was to someday take over her family's inn and make it even more successful. Picking on Tavish and the others in the process was just part of the fun.

"Oooh a gift for the enemy, Lucinda you saucy minx. You shouldn't have..." Scout grabbed a piece and took a bite but quickly paused. "...Uhghg!"

She spat it out and scowled at no on in particular.

"Oh, that was hilarious. How mature." Scout huffed, crossing her arms and leaning against the window looking annoyed. "I knew it was moldy all along... I was just playing, that's all."

Laughter rang out through the room, even the farmer was he laughing as he walked out. Lucinda, giggled and skipped back to the bar where dropped the tray and picked up a pitcher of weak ale to fill the empty cups of those still eating.

Were you truly? Didn't Father Willibald say that "only those desperate for companionship submit themselves to mockery" not two weeks ago when encouraging that merchant's boy to stick up for himself?

It was technically true, though terribly out of context, still it earned more chuckles from the diners. Tavish might have said more, but the morning crew was heading out to begin their day's work, so he merely wished his guests a good day, and begins wiping the bar down with his slightly used rag. Seeing scout still in the window, he throws a last jibe before setting himself to the task of emptying the prridge pot and starting the stew.

Have you no chores to attend to? Your father's inn must be quite empty indeed! Oswin!

Yes Papa?

Have you finished feeding and exercising the horses today?

Yes Papa!

Then be so kind as to escort Scout back to her father's inn, we wouldn't want her to trip on anything now would we?

No Papa...

Oswin sighed and trudged out the door. He always felt uncomfortable when scout was around, he hated the way she always seemed to stare through who ever she was looking at. Some of the kids thought she was a witch, having traded her sight so she could see the future. Papa said it was nonsense, always asking Oswin "if she could see the future then why didn't her father own all the inns in town?" whenever he brought it up. And Oswin couldn't answer that question, but he still didn't like her eyes. If she just kept the closed maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but she was always "not watching" as the kids in town called it. Oswin stepped into the street and waited for Scout to join him, trying to keep her in his peripheral vision.

Scout didn't need help getting back to her inn but she decided to let Tavish' son escort her anyways because she was very aware of her effect on him. She was blind but not completely oblivious. Scout heard the kids running around, whispering about her being a witch. It was honestly pretty funny.

"Woah, did you see that?" She pointed out in front of them then quickly tried to feign innocence. "I mean... I'm blind, so obviously I didn't see a Spirit. Even if I could see demon auras, which I probably can't, I'm sure it's fine. Maybe it doesn't snatch up children and drag them to hell. I'm sure you'll be okay Oswin. I hear they only attack ones that hang out with witches."

She continued walking along the path, trying hard to hide her grin.

Oswin jumped as Scout suddenly pointed something out, but there was nothing there... then he realized she was teasing him, and scowled, hunching his shoulders against the rest of her words and not quite succeeding in blocking them all out. He was tempted to knock her to the ground but Papa was very strict about that, no matter what happened you didn't mistreat a woman, or a girl. Part of it was chivalry, but part was superstition too, Papa was convinced it was better cross paths with a black cat than to cross a woman. It sort of made sense, but Oswin wasn't convinced of it just yet.

You're just trying to scare me, if demons ate those who hung out with you, you'd have no parents by now. And besides, you keep playing at being a witch and people will start to believe you. Then you'll be burned at the stake after you hear your parents screams as they're killed for birthing a witch, is that what you want? My father won't mind the lack of competition, though he'll feel cheated of the opportunity to run your father out of business properly.

Oswin noticed a large puddle ahead, and decided to see how much scout could "see" of the world around her, and kicked a pebble along the ground into the puddle. He stepped to the side of the puddle, but didn't leave any room for her to continue walking beside him and not miss the puddle, unless she switched witch side she was walking on.
