Possible Character Concepts


  • At least one human with paranormal abilities; telekinesis, pyrokinesis, telepathy...something of that nature. We're talking about a one in a thousand. This person probably won't be as heavily augmented as some of the others, but the augs they do possess will be the kind that boost their abilities...and probably turn them somewhat twitchy and unstable.
  • A former law enforcement officer (preferably a detective/federal law enforcement type) that was scapegoated for a scandal that involved some sort of coverup of what was actually responsible. This dishonored individual was, perhaps, maimed in the process. They might well be working as a consultant or private investigator. They understand how government works; perhaps part of a DOJ task force investigating corruption that went awry of the vampires.
  • An ex-criminal of some sort, working for a cartel or organization as a specialist, perhaps as a high tech burglar or smuggler. This person knows the streets, the corruption of people, how to grease palms and get things through security. They know how people are connected in the underworld and where to put the pressure on. These sorts of organizations are often used as fronts for the vampires and their more unsavory activities, such as feeding. Perhaps this character got in too deep, objected and was left for dead. The Vigil is not an organization concerned with legality -- it is at war, and a soldier that knows the enemy is valuable.
  • A "Face"; someone, probably a woman, that caught the attentions of a vampire that prized her looks and social grace, but was overcome by his urges and left her bleeding somewhere, clinging barely to life when the Vigil found her. She had a high flying social life and a respected career, perhaps as a lawyer or a corporate executive or even an actress or known personality before the event. Her skills, her ability to control herself and put on a persona allows her to smooth her way into places where a hundred men with guns would be foiled. Her ability to manipulate people with the pheromone and emotional manipulation implants she has received have taken her natural talents at persuasion and turned her irresistible.
  • Come up with something and make it yours -- that's always a good sign. ;)

History
Every character should have had an encounter with vampires that went badly, as that's how the Vigil found and recruited them. And as the vampires can tear through mortals in a one on one fight, odds are that they barely survived these encounters and were damaged in the process.


Psychological Profile:
The character's outlook on life, including any psychological trauma they've endured.

Modifications: (The ones already listed are standard issue for all characters)

  • Communications suite, HUD and neural-computer, all standard issue – Vigil agents are able to text by thinking it among each other on a heavily encrypted wireless network. In fact, the computer works off brain impulses and is easily one of the most sophisticated and useful implants they have; what's more, its capabilities have yet to be fully exploited. The downside of this implant is that it includes a cortex bomb with an anti-tampering device. A captured agent can set it off, destroying the hardware inside, or a signal from control can do the same. This is to prevent the enemy from learning the capabilities of implanted agents.
  • Internal air supply and aerial toxin filter -- this also has the added advantage of making the agent immune to vampire pheromones, as some types of vampires are known to use this to seduce their prey.
  • Blood/liquid toxin filter -- the obvious is at work here -- vampires use their blood as a means of controlling mortals, and this system (and everyone, even non field agents, in the Vigil organization have this implant) screens out one of most subtle weapons a vampire has, rendering them functionally immune to being controlled through ingested blood the way mortal thralls of a vampire might be.
  • Eye augmentation; a HUD showing all sorts of system data, such as the status of implants, as well as allowing for low-light and ultra-sound modes of vision, the latter being thought to be more effective than thermographics when dealing with vampires, who tend to run cold if they haven't fed lately.
  • Other implants as you see fit. Be creative, the Vigil is experimenting.

Equipment: (The items already listed are standard issue.)

  • Mimetic Camouflage (Predator) coat, though this is designed to look more like a trenchcoat -- no doubt some project engineer with a penchant for the dramatic, or an interest in fashion design. The coat is actually stylish, which serves a dual purpose as vampires tend to dress stylishly and surround themselves with the stylishly dressed. This allows Vigil agents one more edge. Of course, they call it the Predator Coat. Because the engineers are geeks. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)
  • Modular, caseless assault rifle/carbine. Bullpup, caseless ammunition, synched with existing implants and capable of mounting a variety of accessories including a 25mm grenade launcher whose munitions range from conventional high explosive to nano-guided scattered mines. It also syncs with HUD implants for improved accuracy in a mechanism similar to a bluetooth link. The trigger is electric and the weapon includes a biometric security system; anyone but someone authorized to handle it and it will blow; that is a standard feature on most any weapon the Vigil has in service with its teams. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)
  • A number of electronic accessories, including a PDA tablet and other items to assist in making physical connection with computer equipment. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)
  • Grenades, mostly white phosphorus. The organization has designed a 'grenade' that involves a strobing UV light that damages vampires -- it is known as 'the disco ball'.
  • Other items as you see fit.

Physical Description:
Despite his extensive augmentation, Daniel passes for human and humanoid, albeit at a greater height and significantly greater weight than he would have had if he'd been able to grow up with all his limbs. Currently, he stands at about six feet tall, weighing in at something around three hundred and sixty pounds, mostly from the extensive cybernetic implants he's had put in; that includes both arms, both legs, reinforcement of his skeleton with nano-woven muscle and subdermal armoring. His arms and legs are both obvious mods and he is forced to wear long sleeved shirts and full pants when moving around in public. His eyes, however, are the most disturbing element of the man; up close, they show the platinum and electrum microcircuitry woven into the iris that reveal them as something not natural, womb-born human. He tends to wear contact lenses, which tend to actually help with the situation, as well as, ironically, nonprescription glasses that help draw the attention of others away from his eyes.

Skillset:
Intense concentration to any task at hand – having survived maiming to the degree that he was rendered deaf-mute-blind and then came back from a traumatic experience, he has impressive willpower. He has gone through all sorts of training within the Vigil, starting with academic study of law enforcement and military techniques, the practices of private security, information on vampires and their capabilities, with a particular emphasis on their psychology and societal structure. Once he was given his implants and was able to use them, he then turned his impressive adaptability to learning a variety of combat techniques, and turned out to be a particularly excellent sniper. He has no formal background or certification, but that's the point – he is a blank file. Because his grandfather is the famous neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Kelly, Daniel has a pretty good working knowledge of the fundamentals of cybersurgery, albeit from the perspective of a patient.

One of his instructors was a man by the name of Alexi Kozlov, a veteran of the Russian GRU Spetsnaz. Daniel's training in things related to combat, intelligence gathering and infiltration/sabotage, come from this man.

His role in the Vigil is as something of a generalist -- his augmentations favor heavy combat, but not at the expense of mobility and other methods. Because Daniel was physically destroyed, his reconstruction was, by necessity, extensive and the opportunities to enhance were accordingly widespread.

History
Daniel is the son of FBI agent Mark and Diane Albert; growing up in suburban Virginia, he had a pretty good and normal life, along with his older sister, Rebecca. In her junior year of high school, Rebecca, who'd been popular and attractive, became embroiled in a relationship with an intense young man named Richard who seemed to have more money than any seventeen year old should, and was extremely sophisticated-- they met at a house party one night. Bored with high school boys and marking time until she went to Columbia, Rebecca was at first very interested, though her father, Mark, started to intervene when she seemed distraught. In the end, taking her father's advice, because it was good advice, she broke it off with Richard.

Richard didn't take the rejection well. The stalking started.

Mark was, at first, pissed, that some punkass would fuck with an FBI agent's daughter, and used contacts and resources to put feelers out on one Richard Mullen, only to find that the boy's parents were very wealthy and very lawyered up. Then, one day, the Mullens, en masse, moved out of the area, and the Albert family breathed a sigh of relief.

Then, that same night, Richard broke in the house, tearing through Mark like he wasn't there, despite being a veteran of the Hostage Rescue Team and the Counterterror Division; Diane was butchered. Daniel, being a boy of imagination and wit, had a suspicion of what Richard was, perhaps having watched the Lost Boys one too many times...he tried to stake Richard with a chair leg. He missed the heart by inches, but enraged the vampire.

For that, Richard explained to him, he would be left alive as a warning to those who could understand the message; do not, ever, fuck with the Eternal. Others that would attack them merely needed to see Daniel's mangled body and understand the price of such chutzpah. Daniel was ripped limb from limb, but tourniquets were applied, as was a gag, and left there to watch helplessly, in and out of consciousness, while Richard went on a tirade about rejection and his rights and the primacy of the Eternal over their cattle, how he would have made Rebecca his queen but that she preferred 'ogres' and 'trash,' scorning his gifts. And then he drained her dry, otherwise intact.

Daniel wasn't even really all there at that point, gagged as he was, as Richard went to work – he ripped out the eyes, destroyed the ears and left Daniel alive, but only just. He even called 911.

The murder of an FBI agent's family was shocking and made news coverage all over America, as did the unbelievable state of the survivor – a myriad of theories flew around network TV until the next outrage, about two days later, and then Daniel Albert was forgotten by all...except for Dr. Michael Kelly, noted neurosurgeon and father to the late Diane Albert.

The Vigil didn't approach Daniel, they approached Michael Kelly, his grandfather. They gave the doctor the evidence and made an incredible offer – they had an ambitious project, but they wanted one of the best neurosurgeons in the world, a brilliant medical researcher that could finally take their project over the finish line and deliver what they'd been after for centuries. The evidence was interesting but Michael Kelly was more sold on the restoration of his grandson and the chance to take retribution against those that destroyed his family.

The doctor signed on with the Vigil, engineering the quiet disappearance of himself and his maimed grandson.

Through Dr. Kelly's contacts, also high flying, absolutely brilliant researchers and doctors, the Vigil recruited from the best biosciences people in the world in a way they never had before. The time of retribution had finally come. Daniel was one of the first subjects, and often had priority on the useful and interesting implants through the offices of his grandfather. Others would receive similar implants to what Daniel had, or implants based on data that came out of Daniel's use of these implants. The Project exceeded the mandate -- the idea was to put individual humans into the same weight class of the vampires. The team that Dr. Kelly assembled was pushing well beyond that envelope in ways that the older Vigil types, the ones who financed it, assembled it and organized it, weren't quite able to envision - Dr. Kelly essentially ran the Manhattan Project of cybernetic enhancements, crash-developing the technologies that would make it possible to fight vampires. None of this was cheap, but the Vigil had marshaled its resources for such a very long time in anticipation of this project. Money alone, however, could not secure the fervor of the project's researchers.

Richard Mullen made it all possible. And that's why he would be the first kill. It was part of the deal.

Psychological Profile:
Daniel has undergone constant PTSD treatment – he was a wreck when they finally installed some form of communication implants in him and restored his hearing and sight first. While there has been immense progress and a focus on regaining what was lost and then exceeding those parameters, there is always the trauma of what he endured at the hands of a vampire. He has seen what those things can do, and while the therapy and implants have given him back a degree of self confidence, he still does not truly believe that he has been brought up to a level where he can engage these things and win. He fights against himself on this.

Daniel is a bit off socially – his company has been medical doctors, nurses, researchers and other assorted old (usually white) guys from the Vigil. He has had limited contact with groups from other socio-economic strata as a result, and certainly hasn't had a normal childhood. On the other hand, he can drive a car, use the subway, book a hotel room, order breakfast and otherwise function in society, so the rest will have to come later – he's functional.

Modifications:

  • Hearing Amplification, including low and high frequency sound ranges, along with balance augmentation.
  • Wired Reflexes - One of the more controversial but effective systems is the wired reflexes, which tend to make the user 'twitchy' but also give them a blinding reaction speed that allows them to react to a vampire with a degree of parity.
  • Muscle replacement; human muscle is augmented with vat-grown, nano-enhanced muscle that increases strength and agility on the part of the user.
  • Bone lacing; reinforcement for the skeletal structure, particularly around the rib-cage, allowing the implanted agent to take more abuse, as well as strengthening the frame for other implants related to strength and speed.
  • Replacement right arm with implanted shotgun, essentially similar to a sawed-off weapon; the barrel is very short and the magazine only allows for three rounds. The weapon has exquisite recoil compensation, being mounted very firmly on a cybernetic arm, and is linked to Daniel's arm. It is retractable and concealable -- anything larger would essentially not be easily concealed in a cybernetic implant. Other, more extreme implants exist that allow for the mounting/dismounting of large weapons on the arm, though Daniel did not elect to take a hardpoint.
  • The other replacement arm, his left, has a variety of sockets and jacks, from USB to ethernet and beyond, to facilitate physical access of an enemy's electronic equipment, including a multitool set. Also, incidentally, the middle finger comes off to reveal a spool of self-rewinding mono-wire, highly useful in garroting/beheading actions. He suggested this modification to the team, and they loved it. “Giving the vampers the finger” has a whole new meaning with the Vigil as a result. The third fingers on each hand have fully articulated fiberoptic cameras that can be deployed covertly to show the agent what is behind them or to get a camera/microphone into small places. Fingernails have retractable blades.
  • Replacement legs, fully functional and stronger than the originals. One interesting feature is the rather sharp blades that are housed in the lower legs of each, and extend from the heel. He's practiced his round-house with that advantage in mind.
  • Hands and knees and feet can be magnetized, but draw on an internal power supply that is replenished by kinetic means, which is to say, with movement.
  • The limbs are socketed and can be, theoretically, replaced with other limbs that do different things. Daniel, however, likes the current mix of limbs.
  • A medical monitoring system that flushes his system with drugs as needed to counteract pain or other medical situations as they arise -- that includes the injection of agents that are used in the event of the use of nerve gas.
  • Subdermal impact and ballistic armor, though not the most extreme sort -- this stuff is again, concealable.

  • Custom sniper rifle, .338 semi-automatic rifle, detachable magazine fed, with a heavy barrel and pseudo-musculature recoil dampening systems akin to those used for cybernetics. It is enhanced with a variety of electronics to ensure high hit probability, including range-finding and elevation/windage adjustment with the same linkage as other the Vigil weapons. The hardware/software package is good enough to achieve consistent hits on a moving vampire, so long as they are unaware of the sniper. It can be broken down into components and transported covertly.
  • Ballistic combat knife, which is to say that the blade is magnetically propelled at extremely high speed when activated. Also contains a monofilament wire (capable of strangulation/decapitation) and is designed so that the handle is heavy enough to break bone when swung. It is a weapon made in the style of the NRS-2 ballistic knife of the Spetsnaz.
  • A number of electronic accessories, including a PDA tablet and other items to assist in making physical connection with computer equipment. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)

Name: James ‘Jay Bee’ Burgess (his first name is frequently contracted from any Jamie/Jimmy diminutives right the way to the ghastly J-Dog/Jayster end of the spectrum. Jay Bee is the most common.

Physical Description:

For a legit cyborg, Jay Bee could pass as a standard human fairly easily, not least because his fairly unremarkable appearance would have most people pass over him without so much as a second glance. Middling in terms of height and weight, his silhouette is as average as can be, and his actual appearance gently factors in both a nondescript kind of attractive that comes with the gift of symmetrical features and that gross kind of junkie-looking signs of unhealthiness, like bags under the eyes and an intense slouch. He wouldn’t turn heads either way, apart from maybe those goths that go for that sort of thing.

This is not helped by (what can be seen of) his hair, which is dyed an unnatural jet black (over mousy brown) and set with pomade so stiffly it might as well be super-glue. While adding to that slight sense of ‘off’, there is a good reason for this. While most people’s cybernetic enhancements are typically obvious (limbs, bonus features tacked on), his tailor-made enhancements are entirely inside (and outside) of his own brain. Being the team’s Psychic (that is, telekinesis), his enhancements took a wildly uncontrolled ability and restrained it such that it could be put to good purpose – see skillset for further details.

He is almost never seen without a bowler hat, and, oddly, he appears to have glowing green lights on the backs of his hands.


Skillset:
Alongside an unrelated and unfinished degree in Philosophy and History of Art at a decent British university, what Jay Bee brings to the table is mad psychic skills - specifically, telekinesis. This is a hugely versatile ability that lends itself to some situations more than others, but general infinite reach within the context of a room and the ability to act invisibly are usually very helpful. Since he doesn’t have a designated thing that he’s likely to do in every mission, what follows is a list of helpful things he has done on occasions in the past.

  • Forget dual-pistols. Jay Bee can more or less successfully hold and fire five semi-automatics simultaneously without lifting a finger. Accuracy goes out of the window at such levels of insanity, but... who needs accuracy when you’ve got five guns firing at once?
  • Projectile-proof: When you have telekinesis, projectiles just don't hit you. While it's a lot of effort, and will cause him to tire quickly, he can basically prevent anything coming near him.
  • People puppets: while people are a lot harder to move, Jay Bee does have the ability to help his allies dodge things that might hurt them, and also help his enemies not dodge things that are supposed to hit them. While it’s much cruder manipulation when the person fights back, try escaping when you have somebody dragging on you from across the room.
  • Instant carnage: if there are objects in a room, and precision isn't required, Jay Bee can fling them everywhere (to create obstacles or a distraction). Needless to say, he also brings his own objects.
  • Levitation and crazy acrobatics he hasn't worked for: when you have a means of defying gravity at your disposal, you use it. Levitation is actually very slow if he hasn't built up momentum, so he often makes do with...
  • Wall walking: with the advantage of being able to levitate anyway to counter-act gravity somewhat and the preparation of suitably grippy shoes, Jay Bee is as effective and comfortable walking on walls and ceilings as he is on the ground.


Because there aren’t many telekinetics out there, Jay Bee hasn't really had any power-specific training from the Vigil. He has of course had the standard-issue training and had his progress with his powers overseen by a supervisor, but specific training is not something he has benefited from. This makes him rather unpredictable to work with.

There is a time-limit to Jay Bee’s abilities, though, and after heavy usage, he must rest. If not, the connections between his hat and brain temporarily shut down, leaving him without any powers and, as described in Modifications, without even full use of his brain.


History
That Jay Bee was a psychic at all was pure chance, and that he discovered it was chance twice over. Sure, stuff had always fallen over around him, but didn’t it always? He grew up as a relatively normal middle-class lad in England doing normal life stuff until, halfway through his degree in Southampton, a vampire attacked him on campus, presumably for blood. This was when the psychic part of his brain kicked in. The exact details are a little bit foggy to him, but things went flying. A variety of otherwise innocuous objects previously sitting in a rubbish bin impaled the vampire, while more general carnage, such as broken windows and even uprooted paving stones.

Unsurprisingly, this didn’t go unnoticed, and Jay Bee was assumed to be the culprit. That the vampire was even a vampire was only known to the Vigil, and Jay Bee was well on his way to being admitted to a psychiatric hospital (at best) or prison (at worst) for his ‘brutal and crazed murder’ when the Vigil intervened with legal and diplomatic mechanisms not known to the lay person.

He was expedited to the US, where he signed whatever forms they threw at him, figuring their custody was as good as anybody’s. It was only later that he understood who they were, who attacked him, and what he himself was.

As he began to explore his powers, he found them explosive and uncontrollable. This was when the Vigil operated, to make his unique mental makeup actually useful, rather than just destructive. Since then, he has been adrift, totally at the Vigil’s mercy, as a non-official US citizen relying on the Vigil’s support for the technical upkeep of his own brain.


Psychological Profile:
Jay Bee is scarred, badly. At the age of nineteen, he was nearly murdered, discovered terrifying powers he didn’t understand, accidentally (maybe) killed his would-be murderer, was arrested and treated as a freak for it, taken into the custody of an organisation he didn’t know, expatriated, and had his brain removed, recalibrated, and re-inserted (in the form of a bowler hat). This does things to a guy.

On the surface, he actually isn’t too crazy, and seems like a fairly sane guy you could go for a drink with. He is all smiles and happy-go-lucky antics. Even for people in the know, he tends to deliberately a bit showy with his powers for his own (and their amusement), appearing to revel in the carnage he can cause.

However, he is hugely twitchy. The sight of any blood or violence rocks him to his core, reminding him of that fateful night at university about six years ago and he associates his powers with that event too. People are surprised he doesn’t abuse them for mundane functions, but, given what he knows they can do, it’s perhaps not that shocking.

Unlike many people with enhancements, his is theoretically optional. Nothing stops him unplugging his hat, destroying it, and living life as an actual retard – something he has secretly always been on the brink of doing.

Equally, living under the thumb and dependently on the Vigil since his attack has permanently wounded his confidence and independence, and, when uncertain, is known to be clingy, weak-willed, and a downright useless lump.

What’s more, there literally was no way for the doctors to fit all of the tech he needed inside his head, and so he has a supplementary external tech repository suitably fashioned so as to arouse the least suspicion – or, in other words, a hat filled with more tech. This plugs directly into inbuilt brain interfaces with camouflaged cables the same colour as either his hair or skin (according to location on his skull) around the frontal lobes, nape of his neck, and behind the ears. Jay Bee wears his hat almost one hundred per cent of the time. There is a good reason for this: as part of the jiggery-pokery, about 30% of his natural brain was removed and replicated in the hat’s circuits and therefore he is roughly 30% less intelligent the moment he is not plugged in. In short, without his hat, he is functionally retarded, particularly with regard to his speech and precise motor faculties.
  • Green LEDs: a small but bright green LED on the back of each hand. These are also permanent additions. They are innately connected to the hat, and switch off if it is disconnected, compromised, or broken. This warns other team-members that he is now a moron, and at risk from being hacked.

The style is a bowler, for several reasons, not least of which is that the rounded shape is most suitable for storing lots of tech and deflecting bullets. It connects to his brain through cables the colour of his hair and flesh (for camouflage) plugging into ports at his nape, temples, and above his ears. These cables are, naturally, very tough and also very taut, so that it cannot just fall off. While the hat is designed to be relatively incognito, it is, naturally, supported by a light but powerful metal framework to stop it simply getting squished in combat.

  • A sack of honest-to-goodness sharp and awkward objects. For a man that can fill a room with flying mess and debris, it pays to have shrapnel, broken glass ornaments, lengths of webbing and fire hazards handy.
  • Boots whose soles are somewhere between caterpillar tracks and pulsing blades, which can tear into concrete. While this is primarily used for walking up walls and along ceilings with grip that would make Spiderman green with envy, they also have a niche for kicking people. While they don't cause that much actual damage, they will bloody hurt what with the whole 'gripping onto the skin and probably tearing it off' factor.

A few prongs of metal on the back of his neck give away the severity of his mental implants, which continue all along down the base of his spine. His limbs have been replaced as well, though in a more convincing imitation of humanity meant for dexterity and agility.

Skillset:
Blake is a hacker born and bred. He was recruited to the Vigil for his immense skill with computers and machines of all kind - if it's connected to a network (as most things are in his day), he can make it work for him. In addition to these talents, he possesses a suite of more physical mechanical skills - he's not a rocket scientist, but he can make a vehicle start in a pinch. Finally, to compensate for his limited combat capability, he has been given an instruction in judo, making use of his augment's speed and dexterity to use a vampire's strength against it.

History
Blake was a career criminal, and a good one; one of the most renowned cyberthieves of the modern era. He worked with a gang of similarly talented individuals, always pushing the boundaries and trying to pull off the biggest digital heist they could. One day, however, they stole from the wrong company - their biggest heist yet had been unknowingly targeted at a vampire shadow organization. Retribution was swift and unyielding - vampires descended on the group's safehouse in a bloodbath of pain and fear. Blake was the only survivor - he was able to slip through the cracks by hiding in one of the building's secret tunnels. Shortly after, he was recruited by the Vigil, noted for his eagerness in avenging his butchered comrades.

Psychological Profile:
Blake shows signs of a predisposition towards hedonism and extreme anti-authoritarian tendencies. Interviews suggest that his past as a thief was motivated more by a desire for recognition than wealth - it wasn't about pulling a big job, it was about everyone knowing he'd pulled a big job. He also displays an unusual emotional attachment to several pieces of his equipment; specifically, the combat/surveillance drones. Finally, he also displays extreme loyalty and dedication to companions - he'll never care much for the Vigil, but he may care for his teammates.

She's well versed in most criminal behaviors, breaking and entering, how to trespass, etc. She knows how to get to where she wants to be with minimal trouble. She also has a wide knowledge about the majority of drugs that are currently on the streets.

She's also very good at reading a person, their tics and behaviors, in order to manipulate (or sometimes seduce) them. She knows a lot about the human mind and how it works, mostly from years of experience. She also knows that everyone comes with a price, and it's not hard for her to figure out how to get people to do what she wants.

She also has many connections to the underworld, whether it be for scrap parts, drugs, weapons, sometimes even blood or sometimes, people.


History
Her parents died when she was 15, leaving her to fend for herself on the streets of France for a long time. She started out as nothing more than a petty thief, breaking into homes and stealing what she could, which involved a lot of trial and error, before she was finally able to get involved in drug dealing, which supplied a lot of her money for a long time.

She worked as a drug dealer until she was 17, when she was approached by an organization of vampires who said they wanted her skills to help them in some smuggling. Unable to say no, she joined their ranks and quickly got to work with them.

She worked in a strange harmony with the vampires for a long time. They provided her with protection, food, money, and she just transported things for them. She was never really aware of what they transported, only delivering cars from one place to another, and occasionally gym bags full of what she assumed was cash or drugs.

It wasn't until one day that a deal gone wrong resulted in her finally opening the back of one of the vans they had given her to see that it was filled with humans, all likely to become nothing more than cattle for the vampires. Devastated, she quickly freed the humans she could and drove off to a remote town, wanting nothing more than to leave her life behind.

A few months later, however, in the dead of night, a group of vampires from the organization found her and broke into her home, leaving her barely alive with one message, “The boss sends his regards.” As a cruel joke, they fixed her up before leaving her on the floor of her apartment, unconscious. Unable to see, hear, move, or even scream, one of her neighbors had called the cops for her, and she later awoke in a hospital, before being approached by the Vigil, who promised her that they would repair her, make her even better, if she joined them.

Having no other choice, and a deep sense of revenge, she accepted.


Psychological Profile:
After the attack, she was left with an extreme sense of paranoia, and is known for constantly being on her guard, for fear of another attack. She was never formally diagnosed with any form of PTSD, although the symptoms are there. She's also become an insomniac, practically never sleeping anymore, besides when she absolutely must. She also tries much too hard to prove herself, and has severe problems with what people think about her, especially what people think of her past. She thinks that a majority of what happened was her fault, and she is scared of people finding out.

At 5'9 and 180 lbs, Yuri is of average height and stocky build. His features are rough and worn, his nose indicating that it has been broken more than once in the past. A shock of shaggy brown hair barely conceals a set of surgical scars running down his scalp. Shifting brown eyes and a crooked set of chipped teeth fill out the rest of his thuggish features, along with the various tattoos on his arms, chest, and lower neck. Along his back, from the base of his spine to the base of his skull, his spine seems overly large and misshapen, and a metallic coupling peeks out from the back of his neck.


Skillset:
Along with training in firearms and hand-to-hand combat gained from a brief stint in the Russian Army, Yuri has gained valuable skills in investigation, interrogation, cutting deals and criminal procedures from his time as an enforcer for the Solntsevskaya Bratva. He is also adept at cutting off any emotions he would see as interfering with his work, whether that work involves disposing of a body or torturing a police informant.

He can speak Russian and English well, and knows a smatterign of German and French.


History
Yuri was born In Saint Petersburg, to a struggling working class family. And even from a young age, he had behavioral issues. He took no joy in his parent's love, and seemed to do all he could to torment them. Even as his behavior became worse and worse, his parents shrugged it off. After all, children could be cruel. Though, they did not realize the extent of his cruelty until they saw him, gleefully smashing in the head of a stray cat, on the side of the road.

At the age of 13, Yuri Fedorovich Maximov was shipped off to a correctional institute by his beleaguered family. It was then that he fell in love with the military culture that seemed to pervade his new surroundings, and after graduating from high school, he joined the Russian Army. It was through experiencing training, and everyday soldier life, that Yuri became disenchanted with the one thing that had captivated him as a bot. He had fallen in love with the pride that came with being a warrior, but chafed under another's command. When his contract ended, he left the service, and took the advice of a man he had befriended during training: find the Bratva, tell them I sent you.

The next few reports of Yuri were sparse, seeing as he had dropped off the grid not long after his discharge. Photos of him came up, in connection to several murders, robberies, and drug rings, stretching from Moscow to Monaco. The incident that brought him to the attention of the Vigil, however, is very well-recorded.

During a hunt, one Vigil killteam found Yuri and a cell of the Bratva engaged with the target. Undeterred by his more heavily armed comrades being torn to shreds, Yuri managed to plunge a knife into the eye of the target before being thrown against a wall and receiving fractures in his ribs, skull, and spinal column. Though he was wounded, the action distracted the target long enough for the killteam to act, and he was picked up for medical treatment.

When told of what he had fought, and what the Vigil as, Yuri was all too eager to join.


Psychological Profile:
Yuri shows a heavy predisposition towards violence, and a lack of regard for the safety of himself and others. His primary motivation, other than violence, is often instant gratification of some sort, in the form of money, alcohol, games, or various other “rewards”. His default mood is one of apathy, which can be covered up easily in order to smooth over negotiations or aid him in his work. Though he usually has a problem with authority figures, he has little problem with the Vigil, most likely owing to his incident. He is also not averse to working in groups, though he prefers to participate in the “fun parts” such as interrogation and fighting.

Years of street fights and rigorous training had long since forged Kentaro's body into solid, sculpted iron when the Vigil finally came along and decided to finish the job. Back then, when he found his body nearly torn to shreds by his inhuman nemesis, he could have been said to be at the peak of human condition. And now, he has surpassed that.

Standing at a strong six feet four inches tall, it's strange to say that Kentaro is almost a little smaller than he was on that fateful day, at least in terms of his bulk. He is light for an Agent, weighing in at a little over three hundred pounds, but just a single look at his physique would tell just about anybody off from calling him "Small".

His hair is dark. Wavy, but kept short so as to not get in the way of fighting. His eyes, on the contrary, are shockingly and distractingly light-coloured. Due to the heavy augmentation of both the inner and outer components of his eyes, it's quite hard not to notice just how inhuman his eyes appear, and so he more often than not resorts to his favoured pair of sunglasses in order to conceal his augments.

Something to be said about him, is the way he carries himself around others. No matter how unassuming he may appear, or how menacing his form may be, he always portrays an image of being both collected and in charge. As a result of his extensive practise intimidating others and inspiring both fear and loyalty in the most unlawful of types, his presence is enormous when compared to ordinary people, as if he were something more than human.

Because of his enhancements, he commonly wears thick gloves and a heavy jacket, but prefers not to burden himself with long-sleeved clothing and instead opts to wear most of his shirts sleeveless. He also favours looser pants, the kind that won't get in the way or obstruct his movement, while also allowing at least a modicum of coolness to remain.

Skillset:
Kentaro's been fighting since he was born, whether it was with his brothers, with his "Family", or with pretty much anybody who screwfaced his general direction. He's a street fighter, a tough, opportunistic sort who would just as quickly stomp your face into the concrete as grab a baseball bat and use it to put a dent into your skull. Because of this, when it comes to fast-paced, on-your-feet hand-to-hand combat, he is somewhat of an expert in the field.

Handling weapons is an important skill for somebody who was in a position such as his, and this is shown in his ability to handle a wide variety of weapons, each with enough skill to get by. Whether it's a knife, sword, high-calibre sniper rifle or state of the art giant laser cannon, he'll probably be fine.

Special note should be made for his Swordsmanship, which has been honed since he was just a youth. In the arts of traditional swordplay, he is no pushover. That said, this skill isn't terribly useful in the modern era, but he makes it work.

Finally, he's a natural born leader, and the kind of person who can make tough decisions at a moment's notice. He's very good at getting a read on situations or people, and deciding the best course of action based on that intuition. His instincts are sharp, and when there's trouble, he's likely to be the first person in a group to notice it and react.

History
Kentarou didn't choose the Yakuza life, but rather, it was chosen for him. He was born into the Family, and lived out his entire life until recently among their ranks, eventually making his name known and inheriting the position of Boss from his father. So, when some shit came along their offices, just asking for trouble, it was his responsibility to see that the problem was dealt with expediently.

The Vampire had other plans.

It was a complete massacre, the entirety of Kentarou's gang was torn to shreds and fed upon before him, and he himself lost the use of most of his body, without getting more than a single hit in on the monster. He was done for. But, he didn't give a shit about any of that. He didn't care if he was as good as dead, so long as he still had a body, he swore to tear that monster's head off at the neck.

Eventually, he got that wish, although it was not quite in the way he had imagined. He barely maintained consciousness throughout the whole thing, but he knows very clearly what he did. He sold his soul away, gave his human body up to the devil so that he could have his wish. The Vigil, they were called. An organization that were set on getting rid of those parasites for good.

They rebuilt him. And he got his revenge.

Now, he had to fulfill his side of the contract. He became one of their agents, signed their damned forms, let them do what they pleased to his body. What he and his family had built up for generations was gone, but he could still fight, and there was still life flowing through his veins.

And nanomachines. Those too.

Psychological Profile:
Kentarou's tough, and extremely willful. Ever since his youth, the virtue of being able to last longer than anybody else has been instilled into his mind. In a fight, it's not the person who can kick the other's ass first who wins, but the person who can take the most hits and remain standing. A movie said that, I think.

As a whole, he thinks of himself as the perfect example of a real "Man". He possesses a certain sense of respect and honour, as well as a dedication to his word and occasionally selfless nature. He's an ambitious soul, he seeks to achieve great things in whatever fields he's in, and won't have it any other way.

As much as he embraces his new life, he still possesses all of the weaknesses to be expected of human beings. The flaws of the heart, and of the need to engage in new things. He does not indulge, but he still must live in fear of the temptations of the flesh. And, due to his violent upbringing, he's quite prone to acting physically when threatened or provoked.

His experience with the hunters of the night have left him changed. He does not want to accept any loss, no matter how small, and will strive to face his enemy directly where possible. Victory, however, is at the forefront of his mind, and while it may pose a threat to his mental health, he will force himself to make any sacrifice necessary to complete the mission.

If given the choice, he would sooner chose to sacrifice himself than another of his squad mates, but he understands his worth and will not be all that quick to just go and let himself die.

Modifications:
  • Standard-issue Augmentation Suite. The works, courtesy of the Vigil.
  • Ultra-hardened adaptive fist plates, designed to maximize the impact and lethality of Kentaro's punches. When not "active", they loosen in order to allow Kentaro an ordinary range of finger movement.
  • Hyper-Augmented Arms, designed to be controllable in a natural sense and adapted from the traditional human form rather than being mere robotic pieces implanted on a human body. Combining lab-grown psuedo-organic material, nanotechnology and flexible, strong artificial muscle fibers, Kentaro's arms are a miracle of science that achieve superhuman feats on a regular basis. When it comes to simple, pure physical action, these augments are rivalled by few save the bulkier, more specialized sort.
  • Vital Tissue Reinforcement, which protects his vulnerable, human parts from sudden damage. His internal organs have been reinforced with countless, hyper-specialized nanomachines that react to physical trauma, hardening and manipulating their elasticity in order to prevent his vitals from being ruptured or pierced. This defence is not perfect, but while it is possible to shoot Kentaro's heart and have the bullet pierce his body, the bullet will often fail to pierce his heart itself, allowing him to continue going as if nothing happened. His skull is reinforced in the same manner, although the vulnerability of this area hardly makes him invincible because of this, it does help him sustain head injuries that would incapacitate most.
  • Self-Healing Nanomachines, which react to bodily trauma and almost instantly go about closing wounds and repairing damaged tissue from the inside. Specialized to repair almost all kinds of damage imaginable, this augment helps one heal quickly when hurt and get back into the fight instantly. However, in extended operations, it is very possible that one may just straight out run dry on "Healing", and find their damage accumulating normally.
  • General Bodily Reinforcement. It was necessary, after the augmentation of Kentaro's arms, to bring the rest of his body up to speed. While they are certainly not nearly as marvellous as his prized fists, his entire body has been reinforced and augmented by the best technology can manage, turning him into a superhuman athlete able to run faster, jump higher and react quicker than most humans.

Equipment:
  • Standard-issue Equipment Loadout. As expected of a Vigil agent.
  • One Bad Sword. Designed based off of a traditional Japanese sword, Kentaro's Katana is often strapped over his back or placed at his side for easy use. He had to nearly strangle the tech team to get this made for him, and while it can hardly be considered a practical weapon, it excels at cutting Vampires in half. When they let him.
  • Ballistic combat knife, which is to say that the blade is magnetically propelled at extremely high speed when activated. Also contains a monofilament wire (capable of strangulation/decapitation) and is designed so that the handle is heavy enough to break bone when swung. It is a weapon made in the style of the NRS-2 ballistic knife of the Spetsnaz. One might ask, why Kentaro has exactly the same knife as a certain other Vigil Agent. To be honest, it's because Kentaro saw it in action, and thought that it seemed extremely cooluseful.
  • An honest-to-goodness, pump-action shotgun, brought up to the standards of the modern era and maintaining its role as the most exciting close-quarters weapon around. While it was chosen for its style rather than its efficiency, a face full of buckshot is still plenty effective at knocking a vampire on its ass at point blank.

Physical Description:
Aceis a very slight and tall man, not so skinny as to make himself look gangly but also not thick enough to look even slightly muscular. He is mostly seen in fine tailored suits or something appropriately ‘designer’. He is a man possessed with a face that tiptoes the line of feminine and masculine; with fine eyebrows, thick lips, high cheekbones and big, clear blue eyes. He seems to have walked straight out of a fashion magazine, which he often has. He has a perfectly messed up mop of dirty blonde hair atop his head.

Skillset:
Ace is a people person. A charmer with wit, sophistication and a keen mind for any and all pieces of advice he could pick up in a conversation. His is The Vigils Face. The man that infiltrates vampire society with nothing but his words and his mind.

Aside from the charm and good looks, Aceis proficient in small caliber firearms and has some rudimentary knowledge of hand to hand combat. He is by no means a fighter, he just simply isn't built for it. His body can't handle the stress of most combat and military grade augmentations. He was lucky that the Vigil could augment him in with their basic kit.

History
Ace is many things and has been many things. Ranging from a model for the pleasure of the well paying and eccentric fashion designers that are abundant these days to a stripper. A product of a wealthy family, one that touts the necessity for humanity to stay human and not augment themselves, Ace was the atypical spoiled rich boy when it came to things such as following the rules of how his father deemed life was necessary in living. When he was old enough to augment himself, he decided on a simple little thing that would allow him to change his eye colour. The change did not go unnoticed by the wealthy head of the Aurous family, especially due to Ace constantly making his eyes neon purple or some other extravagant colour. This act of rebellion was something that continued throughout Ace’s life, ergo him going and stripping to piss off his father and hopefully besmirch the Aurous family name.

Ace’s induction in to The Vigil was not a pleasant one. Having found a steady model job that allowed him to live comfortably, Ace grew grandiose with the parties he was known to throw. The penthouse suite he rented was filled to the point of burst. Lights flared brilliantly in the dark enclosure. Bodies pressed together in a warm sweating mess of drunken flailing and debauchery. Tits were flashed, drugs were taken and alcohol ran like rivers. Above it all sat Ace. He was above the people that writhed to heavy bass and hypnotic pulsing of the dark industrial music that was so popular with the raving scene. Except for one. She was fabulously made; all dangerous curves, flowing hair and femininity. He approached her, wishing only to spend a night. What he got was a set of fangs ripping his throat. The Vigil stormed in and quickly worked to save Ace’s life. Since then, he became a slightly more famous and slightly more reclusive due to his other life as part of the Vigil.

Psychological Profile:
Ace is still kind of a normal guy. Well about as normal as a guy that lives a lifestyle of constant alcohol and cigarettes with no consequences can live. He is a womanizer, always looking to get laid to varying levels of success. With his invasion and constant infiltration of vampire society, he is able to easily slip into many numerous persona’s he has concocted and precisely recall the complex web of lies that persona has. Some call this signs of a sociopath, Ace just likes to think of it as a very special skill. He is still rather afraid of combat and fighting vampires as he, unlike his fellow Vigil members, is not suited for combat.

Modifications: (The ones already listed are standard issue for all characters)
Communications suite, HUD and neural-computer, all standard issue – Vigil agents are able to text by thinking it among each other on a heavily encrypted wireless network. In fact, the computer works off brain impulses and is easily one of the most sophisticated and useful implants they have; what's more, its capabilities have yet to be fully exploited. The downside of this implant is that it includes a cortex bomb with an anti-tampering device. A captured agent can set it off, destroying the hardware inside, or a signal from control can do the same. This is to prevent the enemy from learning the capabilities of implanted agents.
Internal air supply and aerial toxin filter -- this also has the added advantage of making the agent immune to vampire pheromones, as some types of vampires are known to use this to seduce their prey.
Blood/liquid toxin filter -- the obvious is at work here -- vampires use their blood as a means of controlling mortals, and this system (and everyone, even non field agents, in the Vigil organization have this implant) screens out one of most subtle weapons a vampire has, rendering them functionally immune to being controlled through ingested blood the way mortal thralls of a vampire might be.
Eye augmentation; a HUD showing all sorts of system data, such as the status of implants, as well as allowing for low-light and ultra-sound modes of vision, the latter being thought to be more effective than thermographics when dealing with vampires, who tend to run cold if they haven't fed lately.

Mimetic Camouflage (Predator) coat, though this is designed to look more like a trenchcoat -- no doubt some project engineer with a penchant for the dramatic, or an interest in fashion design. The coat is actually stylish, which serves a dual purpose as vampires tend to dress stylishly and surround themselves with the stylishly dressed. This allows Vigil agents one more edge. Of course, they call it the Predator Coat. Because the engineers are geeks. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)
A number of electronic accessories, including a PDA tablet and other items to assist in making physical connection with computer equipment. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)
Grenades, mostly white phosphorus. The organization has designed a 'grenade' that involves a strobing UV light that damages vampires -- it is known as 'the disco ball'.
Small caliber hand gun - Ace is unable to use the standard issue Vigil firearm, so this is his gun.
The Mask - Ace had a mask created for him by The Vigil, able to disguise himself and alter features on the fly. The Mask feels and looks authentic, the only telling sign is a small, nigh invisible line that sits just under his collar bones. It is able to imitate hair.
