It's not leading causes of deaths. x_x it's the most distinctive cause of death for each state. In other words, what cause of death in each state happens there more than in any other state. So "Texas has more people dying of tuberculosis than any other state", not "Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death in Texas".

It is interesting that coal mining country most distinctly suffers from chemically caused lung conditions.

Also interesting that both Idaho and Alaska have the most nature related incidents when you consider that they are both mostly wilderness.

Hospitals...can go bankrupt? Why aren't they bailed out or get more funding or something? Does the government not regulate hospitals at all?

They do, but Hospitals still run based on profit. It's possibly that TB just isn't sexy enough to get good donations. Doesn't have the same swing that Cancer does.
