So, in starting roleplays, do you recommend starting with an interest check, or placing a thread directly in the roleplay section? Because on one hand, it looks like not very many people browse the interest check section at a time, so I'm not sure if my threads would get noticed. On th other, however, interest checks give a gauge of who's interested (that's a given).

Interest checks tend to be very useful for gathering interest. It is where most go to find RPs to join.

Just because people aren't posting in Interest Checks doesn't mean they aren't looking. It's always worthwhile making an Interest Check before dropping an OOC.

As I see it, the interest check is a place to pitch a prototype of your OoC, and see if people might be interested to save the pain of all of the world-building and planning that can go into an OoC, only to find that nobody actually wants it.

To add too this, it can actually help with the world building.

With an interest check, it is a good idea to pitch a very basic idea and try to drum up interest by allowing others to participate in that idea's germination. People feel more inclined to dedicate time to something they helped to build.

While I've tried this method a billion times, I tend to find that the players of an RP are frequently reluctant to contribute to world-building or plot development, and kind of expect a GM to have it all basically sorted. They might offer criticism on what the GM has, but otherwise tend to be passive.

That's just my experience, though.

I've never had too much trouble getting interest in the world building stage, but when it comes to do actually RP everyone gets a few posts in before they all suddenly have essays to write for school that'll take them at least the rest of the year to complete.

It could be that I know a few people who I can always count to participate in the interest checks, so that makes them look more active.

The idea has to strike their minds right. Thats all you need to get people to pitch in.

The above is solid.
Also, a thing to note; if your roleplay goes in the casual section you *will* be drowned out. The sheer amount of posts being made in there makes it a bit of a gamble to be noticed as compared with being in an interest check.

Indeed. A disproportionate number of RPs go there. If you're into writing a bit more than a couple of paragraphs on averageblithely a fair bit of planning, we highly recommend utilizing the Advanced section. There your RP won't drown in other threads.
