"Bring it. I am ready for anything." | "I am not changing back to who I was."

It was a long journey. Stephen knew because he had stayed awake for most of the trip and wasn't really tired or sleepy but more excited to see what this new town might bring. He was bouncing in his seat as his father and mother were in front of them, discussing some important matters regarding the move. Stephen kept quiet while biting his bottom lip, now with a worried look plastered against his face. He heard his father say something about a death at the lake nearby their new house and he felt his stomach begin to churn. His emerald green eyes stared over towards his identical twin sister, Samantha, who had just woken up with a jolt and breathing very heavily.

Stephen eyed her with a raised brow out of curiosity then muttered. "Hey. You alright?" Samantha looked at him then lowered her head, nodding it while sitting back into her seat, arms folded over her chest. Of course, Samantha had lied. She was not alright. She had a terrible dream about her killing her own brother but why would dream something like that. She didn't know but was going to keep her brother close to her while they venture into their new life.

"Are we there yet?" Stephen groaned while leaning his head back against the headrest. His mother turned to face him with a smile. "We are actually." As they past by Lake Nocallula, they saw a swarm of police cars and ambulances surround the area. Samantha's eyes scanned the perimeter as she looked towards her father, basically asking what had happened. "Someone drowned but he was like almost at the bottom of the lake." Her dad explained while looking in the rearview mirror at them both. "Now, listen to me, I do not want you two to worry about anything. Alright?" When he was finished, Stephen and Samantha looked at each other and nodded their heads.

"And we are here." They pulled up into a little townhouse, which had a gray tint to it while the window shutters were white. Stephen stepped out of the vehicle first, looking up at the house with a smile. Samantha had a disgusted look as her mother came beside her. "Why that look?" She asked and Samantha replied. "It's gray. Gray is black and white mixed together. Gray is so dull." Stephen and his father both looked at each other and shook their heads while grabbing the bags and bring them inside of the house.

As they entered the house and started rearranging the inside to their liking, a delicate knock came across the front door as Samantha yelled that she got it and opened the door, revealing a dark haired guy behind the door. "Hi. I see that you guys are new to town." Samantha nodded her head towards the male's obvious accusation. Her father came right up behind her with a smile. "Hi. I am Pete. This is Samantha, Melinda and Stephen." Pete, their father, said while pointing at everyone. "I am Detective Malone. Just wanted to stop by and welcome you guys to the neighborhood and the town. I think I should bring you guys up to date but a curfew has now been placed on this town. It's at ten o'clock tonight, well every night. Understood?" Detective Malone eyed Samantha and Stephen when he asked if they understood. Stephen nodded his head while Samantha shrugged her shoulders. "They understand." Pete commented as Detective Malone looked at him a slight smile. "Good. Have any problems, here is my card." Detective Malone handed Pete a card then walked away.

They all turned heel and walked back inside of the house. "Now, Samantha and Stephen, I want you to respect Detective Malone's curfew. Got it? Good. Oh and starting Monday, you two will be starting school at Henderson High." They both groaned as it was Saturday so that had a whole two days to enjoy before school started and as of right now, they were doing nothing but unpacking.

Stephen sat upon his bed, going through his belongings just as Samantha knock upon the doorway. "Hey, want to go and tour the town for a little bit?" She asked with a smile. "Have you finished unpacking?" Stephen asked her. "No, but come on, it's almost curfew time. Don't you want to explore, just a little bit?" Samantha teased her brother and a smirk spread among her lips now. "Okay. Let's go." They both rushed down the stairs as they told their parents that they'll be right back. Stephen and Samantha both walked along the sidewalk, edging near to where the police officers were recovering the body. They ducked down behind one of the cars and made no sound.

They hoped that no one had spotted them.

“So, Isabella texted me last night?”

“Ooh, a booty call?”

The moving truck loped across the street, the inhabitants laughing as darkness tinged the sky. The small space inside smelled heavily of French fries and chocolate milkshakes. Chris and River couldn’t get enough of the smell. Ever since they were little, Chris’s mom would get them French fries and chocolate milkshakes and they would scurry into Chris’s dad’s truck, sitting there and eating. It started as a way for peace and quiet, but soon became a tradition. After inheriting his father’s truck, Chris became reliant on the short time it took for them to finish their delicious treats. River never asked him why, she didn’t need to. It was because it was a short return to normalcy for him, a piece of his old life. They never talk about it.

“I wouldn’t call it a booty call. She was drunk.” Chris chuckled, stuffing a french fry into his mouth. He swallowed before continuing, “She was nagging me about getting back together.”

River smiled, flicking a lock of red from her face and sipping her milkshake. “What did you do to get rid of her?”

Chris smiled in amusement, his green eyes shining with a mischievousness that River rolled her eyes at. “Well, I told her we were dating of course.” Chris said, as if it was the most obvious answer in the world.

“Ha! And did she really believe you?” The girl shook her head, slumping against the car door and slamming her shoeless feet on the dashboard. Chris had the mind to swat her feet away, but he knew it would be useless.

“Half the school thinks we’re dating – I mean, we did kiss once.” Chris reminded, taking a smooth turn onto the darkened road by the lake.

“It was spin the bottle! By the laws of teenage-dom, I had to kiss you.” River complained, ripping a fry in half. “Besides, you’re like a brother – you even call my mom ‘ma.’”

“Hey, I’m just preparing myself to be your future husband. Thirty years, remember? We made a pact.” Chris murmured.

“We were five.

Chris was about to say more when they saw the flashing blue and red lights up ahead. The lake would have been indiscernible if not for the shimmering beams of moon occasionally sliding upon the lake’s surface. The ambulance was there as well, a block of white that River had to squint at to see what they were carting around, but even then couldn’t tell.

“What are you making of this, Great Seer?” Chris asked sarcastically, but the words struck a chord in River’s chest.

A voice, feminine and masculine yet neither all at the same time, whispered in her ear. The words were jumbled, not making any sense, and the closer the car came to the scene, the louder the voice was. She felt her chest tightened and an urge – no, a dire need – to go to the lake resounded in her mind. The car crept closer and closer to the oncoming chaos and River felt, with each wheel-turn, her heart was squeezed tighter and tighter. They needed to pass it, needed to, or she would surely go insane. They were almost there – they couldn’t stop, they shouldn’t, but she needed to. Keep going, please keep going. Only a short distance now, and she would be free.

“Stop!” River managed to yell, her voice strangled and croaky. Immediately, Chris stepped on the brakes and the car jolted to a stop.

“What?”

River ignored him, instead focusing on her hands which she wrung and wrought together until they were white. Then, she unlocked her door and stepped out, “Stay here, Chris. I’ll be right back.”

River didn’t bother hiding, instead she took steady, measured steps until she knew they would definitely see her, then ducked low to the ground and crept around the ambulance. She peered inside the hospital truck, trying to see whoever was in there. Her neck craned and craned, until her eyes landed on a shining, black body bag. Someone had died.

Their eyes kept on bouncing from each other then back towards the scene. Samantha knew that no ordinary human would drown themselves and knew that it had to be some sort of supernatural creature lurking inside of those waters. Her eyes went over to her brother as she breathed softly then looked up at someone approaching the scene. She tapped her brother and pointed her index finger at the female. Stephen looked and raised a brow. He didn't really say anything because it seemed like she was in a trance-like state of mind, at the moment. Samantha called out towards the girl. "Hey." She said very softly then her brother got up and went after the girl. "Hey. You might not want to be here." Stephen held her close to him. "It's okay, officer, I got it." He told an approaching officer then walked with the girl away from the scene.

"You're very bold." Samantha walked up to them both with muttered words and arms folded over her chest. She eyed the female before her then rolled her eyes away. "What were you thinking? Getting close to the scene like that. You should be thanking my brother for saving you from jail time." She huffed then walked away after a swift hair flip. Stephen sighed while rubbing his the bridge of his nose. He looked towards the female and locked his eyes with hers. "Look, I am so sorry about her. She is..." He did a gesture where his index finger circled around his ear - Basically calling his sister crazy.

After a soft chuckle, Stephen went after Samantha and finally caught up with her. "Hey. You didn't have to talk to her like that. She could've been a serial killer or something, you know." Samantha shrugged her shoulders then looked at her brother. "I could've taken her even if she was." Stephen grabbed his sister by the arm and pointed towards the direction of their house. "You might need to go home and cool off." He stepped aside and waved his hand for her to pass him, which she did but not without nudging him with her elbow first.

Another sigh came from his lips as he continued walking along the sidewalk, hearing a lot of snarling and growling in the distance. He looked all around, nothing. It starting to get pretty scary outside all by himself but he continued to walk anyway. With every single step, the noises grew even more and more intense but again, nothing was there. Stephen was starting to think that he was indeed going crazy but that was his sister, not him. With a soft chuckle and turn of his heel, he saw a creature standing between him. It was a werewolf and not a very happy one.

Stephen paused in his tracks with started backing up slowly then turned around and darted towards the woods. The fearsome creature snarled and growled as it chased him throughout the woods. He fell down on the ground and the beast circled around him, like a predator stalking its prey. His breathing grew heavier and heavier but the beast snarled one last time before running away. With a gasp of relief, Stephen laid down in the woods but shortly got up and went back home.

No one really believed that he got chased by a werewolf. They simply laughed at him but he was telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Stephen went upstairs and his room, laying down on his bed stomach first with a slight huff and breath.

River could not stop staring at the white truck with the red insignia on it. Even when a hand grabbed her, guiding her away from the scene, she continued to stare over her shoulder, her feet tripping and stumbling over rocks. Even when a duo began talking to her, she only stared at the truck, hearing the sounds of their mouth, but not comprehending what they were saying. If River was asked to describe the two later, she would not be able to, due to the haze that swirled in her mind. All that was burned into her mind was the shining black bag with glimmers of white from the artificial light.

River…River…River!” As if she had jumped through time, the redhead was back in Chris’s truck. A truck that echoed with memories and for a brief, very brief moment, River could have sworn she heard the deep rumble of Chris’s father’s laugh.

River glanced around, confused, staring out at the darkness that sped by her, shapes of trees and bushes. When she glanced into the rearview mirror, she only saw a slight lighting of the sky from unseen lights.

“River, are you okay?” Chris glanced from the street, his concerned eyes meeting River’s before her affectionately, but platonically, touched his best friend’s hand. Almost immediately, he withdrew. “God, River, you’re cold!”

The exclamation completely snapped her from her haziness and she jumped in her seat, bewildered. “Chris, how did I get here?”

“Uh, you walked? Unless you’re secretly superman and can fly. So what was all the commotion at the lake about?”

River laid back into the chair distractedly, caressing her forehead as a small headache began to form in the middle, like a storm. “Someone drowned. Chris, I don’t remember coming back to the car.”

The brunet took a slow turn into their neighborhood, passing houses with brown rooftops and white walls, with trucks and minivans. “Maybe you are in shock. Do you want to spend the night? Maybe that’ll help.”

“Yeah, sure. Thanks, Chris.” River answered, leaning her forehead against the window. For once, the window didn’t feel cold.

Later that night, River called her mom to tell her where she was before she collapsed into Chris’s bed, snuggling Chris’s old giant teddy bear named Wonder Will. Chris slept on the floor amongst heaps of blankets and pillows with Iron Man playing in the background.

"Bring it. I am ready for anything." | "I am not changing back to who I was."

It seemed like their weekend had went by a lot faster than expected. It was already Monday, a school day and they were up early because of all the possible paperwork they have to fill out whenever they get to school. Samantha knocked on her brother's door and smiled. "Hey. Hurry up, dad is waiting." As soon as she spoke those words, the sound of a horn could be heard blaring. Stephen was ready but was just a bit nervous about starting a new life at a new school and making new friends. But how bad could it be. After yet another blare from the horn, Samantha and Stephan stepped out of the house and into their father's Tahoe.

The ride to the school was silent as their father kept on sighing after seeing the looks on their faces. He wanted to speak but couldn't find the right words to say. Samantha and Stephen got out of the car along with their father as they stood side by side. "Well, another school for us to conquer." Samantha said while hoping her words would smooth over the slight tension in the air. "Alright, guys. Go find your lockers, put your books up and meet me back in the office. Okay?" They both nodded their heads and went on to find their lockers, which they had gotten a week earlier.

While at their lockers, a guy pushed Stephen into his and laughed about it while high-fiving the guys beside him. Samantha looked at them and scoffed with an eye roll while looking towards her brother. "You okay?" She asked sincerely as her brother nodded his head then slammed his locker shut, walking towards the office. A soft sigh came from Samantha's lips as she closed her locker and followed behind her brother.

After spending not even an hour inside of the office, Stephen and Samantha went to their first class. Upon entering, everyone eyes fell upon them. "Hello. Are you Stephen and Samantha?" Mrs. Hinson asked them. They both nodded their heads as Mrs. Hinson pointed to the two empty desks. One of them were beside the window, that's where Samantha sat and then the other one was beside a red headed girl and that is where Stephen sat.

He took out his notebook, readying to start class as he sunk down in his seat a little bit.

River did not know what she had done in her past life to have been born into such a cruel world. The sun had barely risen above the horizon and the world seemed to be covered in a gray film yet the blasted educational system expected her to be up, dressed, and ready for a full day of learning. This educational system is bullshit. By the time she was supposed to leave, River was still eating breakfast, half asleep. She wasn’t dressed; instead she was in her pajama shorts and an oversized t-shirt. Part of her was tempted to just skip school and go back to bed, but the watchful eye of mother dearest.

“River, Chris will be here any minute.” Ms. Dermott warned and River groaned something unintelligibly.

Like clockwork, the door opened and Chris waltzed in, dancing to an unheard tune in his favorite blue hoodie. When his eyes landed on River with her unbrushed hair, wrinkled pajamas, and the bags under his eyes, he stopped and threw his hands up in the air. “Oh for fuck’s sakes, River.”

The redhead knew that her moment of peace was over and she begrudgingly trudged up the stairs. Several minutes later, she came downstairs in ratty jeans and a v-neck on with a graffiti-printed belt. Chris was lounging at the bottom of the stairs and when River finally reached the ground, he grabbed her hand and ushered her outside.

The school was crowded with students when they arrived and it took some weaving for them to get inside. To make matters worse, people kept stopping them to talk to Chris and ask if it was true they were dating with which River would try to deny while Chris would pointedly look at their hands and answer with a decisive yes. Finally, they arrived to their first period and Chris patted River’s hand before letting it go.

“Yeah, so I told Tanner to fu–.” Chris was interrupted by his phone which buzzed slightly in his pocket. River released a sigh of relief because if she had to listen to him talk about Tanner one more god damn time, she was going to lose it. “Oh, hey, I gotta go talk to Isabella, but I’ll be back before class starts. Probably.”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Go talk to Isabella.” River muttered, waving Chris off and he began to saunter in the other direction.

River entered the classroom and took her seat, slumping in it and opening up a book to read. Eventually, class began and Chris still wasn’t there. River rolled her eyes – typical Chris. The door opened and River looked up, prepared to give a good glare at Chris when two unfamiliar students walked in. New students, whoo. That means people are going to fight over being their new friends and its going to become drama that River really doesn’t care about. Oh well, it doesn’t matter, River won’t get involved in it. Wait…River glanced to the side and realized she had one of the two opened seats in the room (the ones that didn’t belong to Chris, of course). Great.

Please find somewhere else, please find somewhere else, please find somewhere else.

One of the new students – Stephen? – sat down next to her and River gave him a tight, uncomfortable smile. Well, there was no point in being rude, was there? Besides, River’s awkwardness will probably just put him off anyways and he’ll leave her alone, right?

“Hi, I’m River.” She muttered, awkwardly giving him her hand for a handshake.

The door opened once again and banged against the wall. Chris bent forward, out of breath, with his hands on his knees, panting. “S-sorry, I’m late.”

“Go sit down, Christopher. And detention.” Mrs. Hinson scolded and Chris smiled, nodding.

“Sure thing, Mrs. Hinson.” Chris ruffled his black hair and when he passed River, he laid a hand on her shoulder and whispered in her ear, “Need to talk to you later.”

River rolled her eyes and nodded, crossing her arms over her chest. She did not want to hear Chris rant about Isabella for an hour.
