Also, taking a stab at the episode name, I think Super Watermelon Island is going to primarily feature the Watermelon Stevens.

My guess is that they packed them too close to each other and they couldn't get the nutrients they needed to be normal or that the gems were trying to add in different DNA to the gems since many look like things from Earth.
