Daniel Jackson was a normal 17 year old guy, going to a normal school. He wasn't part of any particular group, preferring to just be by himself or with a few friends, instead of being with those that were more popular or in a bigger group. It wasn't that he was weird, boring apathetic, he was simply kind of an introvert that enjoyed spending time doing things his way, like riding his bicycle all over the city and exploring places most people wouldn't dare go into.
Because of this, his parents were constantly thinking of ways to get him to open up and socialize more. They were about to give up until his mother came upon an ad at Daniel's school, requesting people to apply to host an exchange student. She quickly sent the paperwork and after a few months there was a letter in the mail. They had been selected to host a student from Europe for a whole year. She decided not to tell Daniel, so that it would be a surprise.
The day the student was supposed to get there, Daniel's mother headed to the airport to pick her up. She was short, unlike Daniel and his father. She stood by the gate holding a sign with the girl's name, smiling as she waited for her.
