It was midday, the sun beamed through the leaves of the forest near Green Fall. A young Elven girl sat on a large stone in the middle of the clearing, her flute raised to her lips. A soothing, soft tune echoed through the forest as the sun shone down upon her. A gentle breeze circled her, gently brushing the grass. At her feet lay a sleeping pup, it lay still, save for the movement from it's breath. She had discovered her magic during the tournament which had passed a week ago, but the discovery was quite an unpleasant shock. She could still remember the feeling of her magic 'snapping' in her mind. However, now she noticed the flow of her magic as it intertwined with the music she played. What it did was unknown to her, but she knew that it was there. Flowing like a stream or even like the breeze that gently swept her hair and clothing.

She could feel the presence of other creatures within the forest as their movements made distinct sounds that she could hear. It was strange. Ever since the tournament, her hearing had become a lot sharper, which allowed her to hear such subtle sounds. She wasn't concerned about the dangers of the forest though. She felt no signs of blood lust nor aggression. Just calm.

Trix awoke from her bed in one of the basic rooms over the Surly Stump, looking over to see her two new pups laying next to her, expectant eyes watching her. She reached out and rubbed them both atop their heads, "Let's go outside then, what do you say Remus? Remilia?" They didn't yip excitedly as one might expect, but their tails did wag. Trix got up, and began getting dressed and relieved herself, the pups hopping off the bed and patrolling the room yet again. It was more than just habit for them, it was their life. Control and protect. Once she'd pulled her boots on, she opened the door. The female led the way, already having learned the layout of the tavern, with the male following behind. It really amazed her how smart they are. Yes, they needed training still, but they picked up many things without having to be trained.

The climb down the stairs was slow, as both pups were still small, struggling but determined as they descended. When they reached the bottom, Trix cooed and thanked them, before the trio left the tavern. They walked to the nearby patch of grass that she'd been letting them use. They looked up expectantly to her, and she nodded, and they went about to sniffing out the area and relieved themselves. "Alright, let's go get something to eat, what sounds good guys? That deer meat was pretty good, but how about that boar vendor?" If the pups understood her, they didn't show any sign of it. Or maybe they just knew that the food didn't have to do with their duty of protecting her.

So they walked through town, Trix watching as the pups watched everything. Whenever they saw another animal, or person, one of them would put themselves between them and Trix. They didn't growl, didn't start a fight, simply put out the visual warning. In doing this, they orbited her like a pair of protective moons. Finally they arrived at the boar farmer, on the edge of town. He had a huge fenced-in section of the woods, where many of his giant boars roamed and rooted about. At the front of it, his wife worked a stand, cooking boar meat in many various ways. Trix bought a larger than normal helping of pig shoulder and bacon, given to her in a paper wrap. The pups didn't beg for the food, simply watching.

"Let's find a place that's nice to eat at."

The left the edge of town, walking between the many vast trees that stood there. The pups kept an even more vigilant watch, as if they knew this area was inherently more dangerous than the village. Remilia's ears perked up, she was the first to hear the music, and Remus followed suit. Eventually Trix heard it as well, recognizing it as a flute, at least, she thought so. It was quite pleasing, "Let's follow the music." And so, Remilia led the way, with Remus following up the rear.

The female pup led them to a small clearing, where she paused, staring at the denizens therein. There was a young woman, who looked a little familiar to Trix, but she couldn't quite place it. She too had a pup, a larger one, that looked a bit like a wolf, sleeping at her feet. There was a flute at her lips, playing an enchanting music, a relaxing melody that Trix quite enjoyed. Not wishing to startle the woman, who appeared to be rather focused on her music, Trix greeted her, "That's a fine song you're playing, mind if I stay and listen?" She found a mossy log, and sat upon it, her pups coming over and sitting on the ground in front of her, between her and the woman. Trix opened her paper wrapped meal, and tore off a few pieces, offering them to the pups first. They both sat, staring at it, leaving Trix smiling. She tossed it to them, and they caught the meat, before chewing on it, eyes never leaving the flautist and her wolf pup.

Trix had plenty of food, "Would you and your pup like some?"

She hadn't realized that a stranger had approached her and Echo. It was normal for her to have her eyes closed when she plays her music to concentrate on her music, but this time she was trying to concentrate on how her magic flowed. It was strange, because she could feel the way it moved. It was stayed in time with her music, flowing with it like a stream. It took her a moment to feel the presence of someone in front of her, she slowly opened her eyes to see woman sitting on the grass. A low growling sound rumbled near her feet. It was Echo. He had woken up and become cautious of the newcomers.

A woman and two small pups. The pups seemed younger than Echo and didn't seem like they were going to be aggressive. She clicked her fingers, creating a loud snapping noise. Echo's ears perked up, before sitting upright on his hind legs, his aggression had instantly dissipated.

Alya smiled at the other woman in greeting, climbing down from the rock to sit at the same level as her. She remembered hearing an offer from the woman earlier, something about food? She noticed the meat, and paused before nodding at the blonde.

The moment the wolf pup, although bigger, started growling, both Remus and Remilia growled in kind. But it was brief, for the wolf made no further aggression and was silenced by his master. They continued to eat their food, their eyes never leaving the wolf. The woman seemed to accept her offer, but said nothing. It was strange. She could've at least said hello, instead of both just nodding and then sitting there. Trix got up, the pups dropping their food to accompany her.

She walked over, smiling, tearing off a decent sized hunk of boar meat. She offered it to the young woman, the pups quite close to the wolf, planting themselves between him and their new mother. They didn't try and get close to the wolf, content to sniff from their posts. Trix sat down next to the young woman, "I'm Trix, and this is Remus and Remilia."

Remilia moved over and sat at her feet while Remus stayed near the wolf pup. Trix gave each of them another piece of the fatty, greasy, delicious meat. If the woman didn't feed her own pup, Trix was ready to do that as well. Then Remilia began to growl. Trix looked down and noticed she wasn't looking at the wolf pup as expected. She was looking across the clearing to where Trix had originally sat. She didn't see anything at first. Then there was a shuffle of green, moving in the trees, another of brown. Trix thought they were just squirrels, until one of the creatures stepped into the open.

It was an odd looking being, like a mix of reptilian and furry mammal. It had two horns from its head, pointing backwards, and she noticed that its furry sections were changing colors based on what was behind it. At one moment, the fur seemed green like the elderberry bush behind it, and at another the brown of the maple tree's bark. How curious. The creature sniffed about, scurrying around, heading for the bits of meat left behind. Then several others came about. They were only slightly bigger than a large rabbit, moving similar to squirrels. They then rushed to the meats, scrambling and snapping at one another as they fought over the meat.

Trix's pups didn't move, but they were on full alert. Trix hadn't seen a creature like this before, muttering to herself, "What are they?"

She was about to take out her paper and quill, but the blonde woman had already handed her a sizable chunk of meat. She nodded at the woman again in acknowledgement before she gave the piece of meat to Echo, who enthusiastically chewed into it.

Alya heard the rustling in the grass and mused at the reaction of the pups. As guard dogs, it was normal for them to react to anything unknown, but these animals weren't something to be weary of, unless you have a nice piece of meat. Bandersnatches were scavengers, or at least, that is what she was told, and they aren't aggressive unless provoked. "What are they?" She heard the blonde mumble. Alya promptly brought out some parchment from her leather bag, scribbling onto it quickly with her ink and quill.

She timidly tapped the woman on the shoulder to get her attention, should she respond, Alya had a piece of paper to hand to her.

"Those are Bandersnatches. They're harmless, but try to keep your food out of sight.. My name is Alya, and my wolf pup is named Echo. It is a pleasure to meet you, and thank you for the meat."

As much as Alya enjoyed writing, she felt a pang of irritation every time she had a conversation with someone. It wasn't because it was annoying to have to write to them, it was because it was inconvenient for the person she was talking to, to have to talk to someone.. who couldn't.

Trix looked over as she heard the woman rustling around for something. When she pulled out writing supplies, the herbalist felt a little bad about thinking the woman rude. She was a mute. That sounded really difficult to live with, she couldn't imagine the horror. She found herself wondering if she was born that way, or if something happened. She'd never heard of any one fixing a mute though. It was one of those things that was a lost cause, it seemed. As the woman wrote, Trix cast her eyes back to the critters watching them play and scamper now that the meat had been divvied up and consumed. They were much less like squirrels now and sort of like... dogs? They wrestled and played, chased and eluded, occasionally they quarreled, fierce little snarls coming out.

When she felt a tap on her shoulder, she looked over and took the note from the woman, smiling slightly apologetically for her previous thoughts. She read it aloud, sort of giving the woman a voice. The name, Bandersnatch, was cute. Definitely appropriate seeming. She said harmless, yet she could see the claws and teeth. Get enough of those and she suspected they could cause more damage than you might think. The woman was named Alya, and Trix looked over at her, "Pleasure to meet you Alya, and Echo. And you are quite welcome, thank you for the beautiful music."

She kept her food close, noting that the pups had already finished theirs. But the wind shifted suddenly, a breeze blowing the scent from both women's food toward the group. All of the bandersnatches stopped, sniffing at the air, then looked toward them hungrily. Remus and Remilia were instantly in front of Trix, standing, growling in warning. "Uh... Alya... I think they know..." They weren't moving, just staring hungrily, and Trix considered throwing what was left of the food. But that didn't remove the smell that covered all of them. She could practically feel the tension mounting, the calm before the storm.

She gave the other woman a slight nod with a warm smile as they praised her music. It happened quite often, usually it was just a few passersby who say it, but hearing it from this girl made her that little bit happier.

Alya felt the slight change in wind and frowned slightly. With such a large piece of meat, the Bandersnatchs were bound to get rowdy. This could potentially become a dangerous situation. She stood up quickly, putting her flute to her lips. Now would be a good time to try something with her 'new found' magic. She started to play her music, she could feel the magic flow forth. Follow me. She thought unconsciously. She slowly stepped away from Trix as she played, her eyes gazing at the Bandersnatchs.

As usual, Echo was the first to be affected by the music, silently following his mother as she played. The Bandersnatchs perked up their ears, listening to the tune. As if they had totally forgotten about the meat scent, they too began to follow the elven girl. A small pack of four Bandersnatchs had grouped up in front of Alya as they followed her music.

The music was lovely, of course, but there was something in it that made Trix want go after this woman. What was she doing? Playing music when these... oh. They were following the sound. Trix looked at the woman perplexed. That shouldn't have happened, no matter how curious the creature. All animals thought with their stomach over most things, or so she assumed. This was unnatural seeming. She looked down at her pups, and they looked as if they were straining to fight against an unseen leash. It looked painful, as they fought to keep their places. She set the food beside her and knelt down to them, trying to provide them comfort, protection, something.

Was the music doing this? Could she stop it? It was unnatu... wait. She had something unnatural as well. Did that mean this music was... magic too? She couldn't worry about that right now, her pups were hurting it seemed. Cooing at them, she pressed her hands to Remilia's ears and focused on trying to protect her from the music. There was a light, lavender hued, soft, pleasant exuding from her hands, and it stuck to the dogs ears. When she pulled her hands away, the light shone bright for just a moment before dissipating, the invisible Shield in place.

"Can you hear me Remilia?" The dog yipped happily, and seemed to be fine now. She repeated the process for Remus, before looking back over as the woman seemed to be leading her own dog, and the bandersnatches, away. Maybe there was an easier way. If she could block out music, could she keep in smell? She picked up the paper holding the meat, holding it in the palms of one hand, and began exuding the light once more, focusing on keeping smell in. With her other hand, she guided the light into a crude bubble around the food, keeping her back between the food and the woman as best she could. Once the bubble seemed complete, the color faded and she set it down on her seat.

She had no idea if it worked or not, for her own dogs wouldn't react to it, and the Bandersnatches were preoccupied. Looking down at the pups, she decided to follow after the woman, and the pups immediately placed themselves between her and the critters, Trix now enjoying the music before, when she'd been resisting.

The music that Alya played was quite upbeat and the mood was further lifted by her skipping. She was having quite a bit of fun with all these small animals following her around. However, amidst her song, she didn't fail to notice the soft glow that came from Trix's hands.. Did she have magic too? But she wasn't using anything to use it. Perhaps it's a magic that is different from her own? Alya noticed that the pups had stopped reacting to her music, which was a relief to her because she felt that she was causing some strain on the poor pups.

After a while of playing, Alya grew quite tired. As her music ended, the magic faded away slowly, the influence still holding onto the Bandersnatches that followed her. She walked around the clearing briefly to see if the animals were still going to follow her around, but fortunately for her, the magic wore off quickly. The Bandersnatches looked around in confusion, getting up on their hind legs one after another in an alert expression. After a short scan of the area, the ferret-like creatures dispersed back into the forest, the scent of the meat no longer lingering in the air.

Alya slowly walked back over to Trix, sitting down on the grass near her. Beads of sweat dripped from her forehead, which she lazily wiped away with the back of her hand. She hadn't felt so tired after a musical performance in awhile. Echo, who had been following his mother around the whole time, clambered onto her lap and promptly fell asleep. She smiled warmly at the pup, stroking his fur gently. In the back of her mind, she wanted to ask Trix about her magic, but she felt that it might be a little too personal to ask about.

When the music ended, Trix felt her mood shift surprisingly, she was no longer entranced to follow this woman. She watched the bandersnatches disperse, and her eyes were drawn to her pups. She could only remember the pain they'd been in before she'd used her magic on them. Her eyes looked down at the woman, who'd just sat near her, and she immediately felt a protective, motherly instinct within her. But this wasn't the same as when she put the shields over them. No. This was angry.

Glaring at the woman now, her posture changing to one of aggression, towering over her. "You hurt them! Why did you do that?!" She stepped even closer, open hand raised menacingly, she wanted nothing more than to slap the mute little bitch. What kind of horrible person hurts innocent pups? But her hand did not fall, stopping herself. "If you ever hurt them again, I won't be as kind. I don't know how you did it, or why, but if your magic music so much as makes them look at you funny, you'll regret it."

She crouched down, her glaring eyes never leaving the woman as she provided comfort to the pups, who seemed a bit confused at their new mother's mood. As her hands rubbed over their ears, she could feel the shields there, and she immediately dismissed them. There wouldn't be anything visible, but Alya, being magically inclined should be able to feel something, even if she'd be unable to identify it. "Do you understand me?" She added with just a bit more protective emphasis.

Alya's gaze shifted to Trix who towered before her with an expression that confused the Elven girl. "You hurt them! Why did you do that?!" The blonde shouted as she raised her hand at Alya. Alya shrunk away from the woman, instinctively raising her arms to shield herself from a blow.. that never came. She lowered her arms slightly, peeking to check if Trix was really going to attack her. "If you ever hurt them again, I won't be as kind. I don't know how you did it, or why, but if your magic music so much as makes them look at you funny, you'll regret it." At this point, Alya was quivering in fear, this was a far cry from the expression that the blonde had when they first met. Echo had woken up from the sudden loud noises, he felt his mother's fear. Moving between the two women, he bared his teeth and snarled at the cause of his mother's distress.

She didn't want to cause anymore trouble than she already had. Hastily she snapped her fingers, causing Echo to immediately return to a neutral stance. As Trix crouched down to comfort the two pups, Alya felt something dissipate, but she didn't know what it was. "Do you understand me?", snapping back to reality, Alya prostrated herself before the blonde woman as an act of sincerest apology, her body still shaking slightly from the shock in her acquaintance's change in mood. She couldn't control her magic very well, but that's not something that people would assume when it comes to music magic, so she felt that Trix's reaction was.. reasonable.

When Trix saw the woman's apologetic position, she wasn't sure if she should laugh or roll her eyes. Where was this girl raised? No one apologized like that. Clearly this woman was a bit backwards. Trix sighed, did she even know what she did, whatever it was? Her posture relaxed as she stood up, "Stop that. Stand up."

She was looking at the woman, her expression softening. "What is it you did to them? And were you doing it purposefully? Is it magic?" She asked the last question softly, despite no one being around to hear them. She was looking around now, just to be sure, "Look, I'm sorry I got angry, but the pups were in pain. You need to be more careful with whatever it is you did. And I don't just mean because it can hurt people or pups. There are rumors of people with magic disappearing... Not hearing from them again. Some of them are attacked or outcast. You gotta be smart about it, its how I... nevermind."

She sighed again, realizing that the woman had probably already caught that slip of the tongue. "I can do it too, though not the same as yours. But I've never shown it, nor talked about it to anyone. You need to be more careful, I don't know what could happen, do you understand?"

Alya came to sudden realization that her way of apologizing was a very old fashioned way. She stood up quickly, dusting the dirt off her clothing. She listened to the woman as she spoke with interest. People with magic.. disappearing? Despite the Trix's own warnings... She just mentioned that she could do magic as well. Surely it couldn't be that Trix trusted her? Oh well. She crouched down, taking out her quill and paper again before scribbling on it. After a short moment, she handed it to the blonde to read.

"My magic flows through my music. I'm sorry that I hurt the pups, that was not my intention. I have only just learnt of my magic and I've been practicing it since the festival. Your magic looks quite different from mine? Do you know what it is? And thank you for the warning, I hope that you will stay safe as well." The letter looked more like one of apology rather than conversation, but hopefully Trix would forgive her transgressions.

Trix had gathered that the magic was in the music, somehow. She just didn't know how it worked, or what exactly it did, or was intended to do. Had the woman commanded the Bandersnatches to follow? Or was she baiting them? Tricking them? Perhaps just talking to them? It would be nice if she could use it to speak or something like a normal person. This note talking was mildly annoying. Though it seemed she'd seen it. Trix had been wondering if others could or not. She could always see her Shields, but noticed that when they were done forming, they grew more transparent. The woman hadn't stared at the pups when they had the Shields about their ears either, so perhaps it could only be seen during forming. This might be a chance to learn a bit more of her magic.

Trix nodded at the woman, and returned to where they'd sat before, patting at the spot next to her. She couldn't stay mad at the mute. Magic was scary and unknown, to pretty much everyone. "I've not known my magic long either. It makes... walls, stops things. I'm not really sure what to call it, it would be easier to just show you." She turned to face the woman, her hands out on in front of her. Taking in a deep breath, she sought out that feeling within her, that feeling to protect herself from this woman. Once she felt she had it, she pushed that feeling out through the palms of her hand. A bright lavender glow seeped out of the skin, forming a substance that seemed similar to maybe putty or something similar, "I can form this, whatever it is, and I can shape it."

She put her hands to the side of the glowing substance, which kept itself suspended in the air before her. Her fingers spread, and the substance moved with them, despite them not touching it. She stretched and wove it into a sheet, trying to make it an even thickness, "You can still see it right? It's not yet done, but when I do this." She nodded, which wasn't actually necessary, but served as a mental finishing to the magic, the wall between them disappeared for the other woman, but Trix could still see it. "Try and reach through where it was, slowly." Trix was fairly confident it would stop the woman's touch.

Alya hesitated a little when Trix invited her to sit. She hoped she wasn't being lured into being hit or something along those lines. In the end, she slowly sat down next to the blonde. Like a shield..? Alya thought as the woman attempted to describe her magic. She flinched slightly when Trix suddenly turned to face her, with her hands out, but she relaxed when she realized that the other woman wasn't about to hit her. Alya watched as a lavender.. glowy blob? formed between her hands.

She nodded when asked if she could see the.. thing. But it suddenly vanished. The sudden lack of visual on the object made Alya blink a few times, to see if she was hallucinating. Apparently not. She could still feel the magic of the sheet, however it was faint. She nodded in response before raising her hand slowly. She stretched forward, her hand opened in a relaxed manner. Suddenly she felt something solid, but it was invisible. Slowly, she pressed her hand against it. It was smooth like cloth, but solid like stone. It was quite surreal to her, but her own magic was quite strange as well. She decided to try tap the invisible wall with her fingernail to see if it made a noise.

Tap. The wall itself seemed to make no noise, but the impact of her fingernail made the slightest of noises. It was audible to Alya, but it might not have been to Trix.

Trish watched her shield, always curious to see how it worked, as she didn't know it real well quite yet. She didn't really hear the tap, but could feel it. She wondered if that was a proximity thing. She did know that once her shields were made, they would stay where they were, regardless of how far she traveled. She did notice light ripples spread throughout the impact point, and the color of the shield faded very slightly. Trix suspected that was the shield weakening. Hers weren't real strong at all, she'd practiced on one many days again, it hadn't taken many swings of a stick to break it.

"It can stop things that aren't physical too. I used it on the pups so they wouldn't hear your music. I just sort of have to... 'tell' it what to stop, I guess? Before I form it at least. I haven't had much time to try and experiment with it, especially with keeping it secret."

She looked down and saw her pups staring right where the shield was, and saw the girl's wolf staring at it as well. Could they see it? Or did they see it and now wondered where it went? There was so much about her magic she didn't know, and she had thought about the possible uses of it. She really needed to put more effort into learning it more. But doing so alone was scary. And she doubted this woman would want to hang around Ruby Banks to help her learn. Plus, how does one ask that from a total stranger?

"Do you know just how yours works? Or is it just like, just 'is' your music? And do many people know of yours?"

As Trix spoke to her, Alya remembered the events of earlier, when Trix had 'placed' the shields on her pups ears. She was surprised that the shields were so versatile, and she started to wonder what kind of shapes you could make them into. However, Alya's magic was completely different from the blonde's, which was fine in her opinion, since it was kind of like meeting a new person.. Kind of. She was brought back to reality when Trix asked her questions about her magic. She quickly wrote on her parchment, pausing every so often to think, before handing it to Trix for the umpteenth time today.

"As far as I can tell, it uses my desires to make people or animals do things that I want them to. Something like a mind control? It's not as bad as it sounds. Most people tend to not notice anything and I would never make people do anything harmful. It doesn't seem to work unless I use my music, so I guess it just 'is' my music.. And so far, only you know."

Trix found herself even more wary of the woman's magic. Mind control? That was utterly terrifying. As far she could tell her own magic was fairly harmless, but that had endless possibilities. Could she make people commit crimes? Harm others? Themselves? And she could tell it affected animals, en masse. She now wondered if it had affected her and she hadn't even realized it. This power was far too strong, if it was in the wrong hands, it could cause so much devastation. Part of her wanted to rush to the nearest Knight and turn her in.

Except the woman knew of her own magic as well, and if the rumors were true, she'd be signing her own death warrant. But there was also the fact that this woman seemed fairly harmless in personality. She didn't come off as cruel, hateful, or anything of the sort. Maybe she was the perfect person for this magic. She did seem to genuinely want to help, even from her earlier display. It seemed, after all, that she was still learning her magic too, and that made her a bird of the same feather.

No, this woman shouldn't be feared. She seemed to be a good person, and her power needed to be respected. For her safety, and that of others. "We should be going, don't want those critters to return, or any others, right?" She stood and turned back to the village, "I'm heading back to the inn. If you ever find yourself in need, or just wish to... discuss things best kept from prying ears, you can find me normally in Ruby Banks. I have a shop there. A fellow," she gulped, having never said the word aloud, "Mage is always welcome."

And with that, she started back towards Green Fall, still worried. Magic was popping up everywhere, and mages were disappearing. But maybe she could help one avoid that fate, and herself as well. The pups were right at her side, escorting her along, ever the faithful companions. "I think we'll leave for home tomorrow, sound good?" She chuckled softly as Remus yipped excitedly in response, not sure he actually understood the words.

Alya smiled and nodded in response to Trix's invitation to her shop. But she decided to stay in the forest for a little while longer as Trix left. She and Echo watched at their new friends were obstructed by the trees. Alya liked making new friends, she hadn't had the chance to do so due to her somewhat sheltered life in the Surly Stump. But now things were changing, for the better. Not only did she make another friend, but also one who knew magic like she did. Although it was different from hers, she was happy to know that there were other people like her.

As the setting sun's rays filtered through the forest canopy, Alya's blissful music softly echoed throughout. Perhaps she would meet more people through her music? Perhaps more 'Mages' like her. Who knows.
