EDIT: If you want, you can take a little bit of control of my character to 'set up' Val her brave rescue. Something like... part of the stairs break off and Aidan threatens to fall or something.

I have in mind that they get attacked. And it could kill Aiden but she takes the bullet for him and gets injured or he can even think she's dead at first?
