If your uni is like the corner of the student commons here at my college then I know that feel.

Under-washed, over-weight people hanging around to play Magic the Gathering with le funneh meme shirts, long-hair coming out from under their fedoras, and improperly trimmed beards.

Try being edgy. That'll scare them.

My neighbors are already the emo-nerd type, so I don't think I can phase them.

About half of them in this computer row listen to commercial black-metal or whatever kids listen to these days. But then they juxtipose this with soft-spoken nerdiness about casual games.

The best I can do to probably tune them out is continue reading my online German newspapers.

I could leave if I wanted, but then there's not much I could do if I did. Like, I suppose I could go get lunch and head to my next class to work on my web-design project early. But then I would be sitting in on the starter web-design class where on their free time some of the people in there like to echo-chamber their politics.

It's not that I don't agree with them; it's just I don't think the issues they got oppinions about are wholly the highest point on a priority list. But I suppose they're more minor than geeking out about a game that didn't get an update for a year and Halo 5.

Actually, I'mma go walk to downtown Lansing for lunch now that their collective girths has freed up the small walking space out has cleared.

I wanted to try this one small restaurant I've been looking at when I go have Jimmy Johns.

If the entire population of your university is exactly like you, how is it that you're not fitting in?

Eh, all that is just people doing people things really. Echo chambering political opinions and talking about goofy internet shit is just the way college be in the modern world; the neckbeardiest thing you can do is to sit by and smugly pretend you're better than them.

Like, in my experience the awkward nerds aren't the ones who just have nerd hobbies. Really, what twenty-something or teen-something dudes don't talk about video games with other dudes their age? The problem is when you get those people who don't get basic social etiquette and start monologueing about shit nobody cares about. That is annoying. I used to work with this one dude, for instance, that spent an hour or so listing off all the reasons the Stormcloaks had the most righteous cause in all of Skyrim, as if he was some sort of fucking Windhelm Bill O'Reilly. But if a bunch of kids want to get together and BS about Magicka or Minecraft or whatever, who really gives a shit, so long as they don't pummel other people who are not interested with that shit.

...that being said, yeh, bronyism is the exception. That shit is never, under any circumstance, acceptable. Change your avis and sigs, burn your plushies, and lynch your waifu, and only then will you be free.

I was always under the impression that, if you have nerdy interests and someone else that you know has nerdy interests, it's something that you have to gradually build up to over the course of standard social interaction, also known as making friends, that kind of thing. If you literally just waltz over to someone and blurt out a nerdy interest, then you're basically flipping a coin at best. Either that, or you're at some kind of fan convention.

In other words: suddenly revealing a nerdy interest to someone you don't know is very much unwise. In the same vein as politics or religion; it's not something you casually talk about. In an ideal world, I'd extend this to what sports team you support, but for some reason sports fans get a free pass despite basically being a different kind of nerd.
